  1. I'm not too pleased either. My house is one mile from the DMFA border, land I lease for hunting is right across the road that forms the border, I have hunted Cornell for 4 years. My hope is that all these outsiders expecting easy kills will soon leave when reality sets in and they see deer aren't as plentiful as they expect. There may be so many hunters that hunting within the DMFA is ruined, but I hope not. KennyD: My suggestion to you and others hunting Cornell for the first time? Scout, scout, scout. That's what the rest of us did! Good luck.
  2. Yes, that's correct. First don't confuse the DMFA with Cornell's EAB program. Cornell's EAB program requires you shoot one doe (as 7J said, that's new this year, used to be TWO does) before you can shoot a buck. Cornell does not care what tags you use, so long as you HAVE tags. That's where the DMFA rules come in. You can shoot 2 does per day with DMFA tags, and even more if you use your standard tags. Since MOST of Cornell's EAB property falls within the DMFA area, there is no shortage of tags to be used. You still have to supply your own buck tags. As for this supposed overpopulation, I'm not seeing it as being that bad. Places that have the worst issues don't have any hunting areas, such as Cayuga Heights. There are a lot of 'em for sure, but not THAT many outside Cayuga Heights. Except for the late season addition, I'm not sure the extra tags are gonna help that much. Maybe I'm just not a good hunter, but its rare that I don't have enough tags to kill the deer I am able to. I just don't get that many in range. All the DMFA is is more tags essentially, plus the extra season in January. Zhe Wiz

  5. 12 gauge (various sabots) 50 cal smokeless ML (300 grain Barnes Originals) 7mm-08 .243 Bow Crossbow That's it! The vast majority have been taken with the shotgun thanks to Tompkins and Cayuga counties refusal to allow rifles. I occasionally sneak across the Cortland county border to use my "banned" weapons - the 243 and 7-08, and there I can't use my crossbow! Strange laws, let's make more of 'em. :-) Zhe Wiz
  6. Well, not to be picky, but only iOS devices (mostly ipads and iphones) don't work with flash. Other Apple products do. I also use my iPad to download trail cam pix. Quite handy. Zhe Wiz
  7. It is expensive, that's for sure. Right now I have a 12 year old and a 9 year old and the are in it CONSTANTLY, quite often with friends. With the Chlorine generator all I have to do is vacuum every day or every other day which takes a half hour at most. I have no trees around it, so very little gets blown into the pool. I don't see that it's as bad as everyone says! Then again, I'm still in the honeymoon stage too, so we'll see in a few years how I feel. I didn't want the pool at all. I wanted the house and land, the pool just happened to be there. No regrets so far though, the pool has been great. if it weren't for TFP I'd probably feel differently too. The chemistry was a mystery until I started reading that site. Zhe Wiz
  8. I used that site this year too. We moved into this house on January 13th, it included my first pool, an in-ground 20x40. Using TFP's BBB method I was finally able to clear up the pool. Ended up converting to a salt pool 10 days ago using advice on TFP and haven't added any chemicals manually since. Great site. Zhe Wiz
  9. About this time last year we saw the house across the road go on the market. I called my wife and told her. Too bad we can't afford it - 30 acres, beautiful view, barn, borders state land, etc. Well after crunching some numbers, I decided we COULD afford it, so we put our house on the market in hopes of selling ours and buying the one across the street. Late June we received an acceptable offer on our house, so we put in an offer. On July 1st, after going back and forth a couple of times, we received a verbal "yes" from the sellers. My wife and I were watching a movie at the theater at the time, I rushed out to take the call and couldn't wait to tell my wife the good news - we did it, we got our dream house! The next day we went into the real estate office to sign away our home, and sign and sign an official agreement with the sellers. Everyone was to counter sign by The end of Sunday, the 3rd. Instead, we got a call from the sellers saying they wanted their lawyer to look it over, and since Monday was July 4th, they couldn't do that until Tuesday the 5th. OK, I'm a little nervous, but OK. All weekend we celebrated, 4th of July was awesome. The 5th came and it was getting late, I called my agent and said something's wrong. She said she'd call again. Eventually the other agent called her back, but instead of telling her the offer was signed, that agent said the sellers had accepted a different offer! What? We didn't even know there WAS another offer! Worse, our house was sold! We had to hustle to get our lawyer to nix the purchase offer on our house so we'd have a place to live! I have a family, the people buying our house had a family. The sellers of the other house didn't give a XXXX about that, they did what was best for #1. Long story shorter, that deal they accepted in lieu of ours? It fell through! Yep, they paid for their greed. We put our house BACK on the market, sold it again, and while I was in a tree stand hunting, I accepted the offer on our house and the counter offer on the "house across the street" AGAIN (only this time for much less $$$). This time it stuck. I write this from that "house across the street." Beautiful view, 30 acres, barn, pond with fish and all bordering state land. What a ride (I didn't mention the January 13th snow storm on the day we moved UP THE HILL!) but it was worth it. Bottom line, nothing's real until it's CLOSED, and don't trust anyone! Sad state, but that's the way it is out there!! Zhe Wiz
  10. Exactly. And I'll likely give it a try this year as well. I already have the mount, just need to buy the expensive part - the Vendetta itself. :-) Zhe Wiz
  11. That's the problem, the Vendetta CAN put out a visible light, exactly like a laser. It's just that it's SUPPOSED to only be used for setting up the Vendetta. That's why it's a bit of a gray area. Zhe Wiz
  12. I do use my ML, which is why I want to use a rifle! In fact, last year was the first year I didn't kill a single deer with my shotgun, even though I got three deer overall. One with a bow, one with an x-bow and one with my Savage smokeless ML. The Savage performs like a rifle for sure, but it kicks like a mule. :-) I'd rather have my 7-08 any day! Zhe Wiz
  13. Unfortunately, though not unexpectedly, this was voted down at the TC legislature meeting tonight. Very disappointing. Maybe next year... Zhe Wiz
  14. There are a few in this list that are ongoing: http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=416973 Zhe Wiz
  15. Well I wouldn't say they'll never follow, but I would say they'll never follow without being FORCED to follow by legal action. NY's anti 2nd amendment practices will eventually change because of court decisions. I just hope it's in my lifetime. :-) Zhe Wiz
  16. Where'd you hear that? It "passed" the public safety committee, was supposed to be voted on at the legislature meeting on 2/21, but has been delayed for reasons unknown to me until 3/20. The legislature hasn't voted on it yet. There is another thread already in the Region 7 forum. Zhe Wiz
  17. I have one and I'm in Dryden - Tompkins county. This page will tell you what you need to know: http://web.tompkins-co.org/sheriff/admin/files/New%20Cover.pdf Your permit (if you get one!) will be restricted to hunting and target shooting only, that's all they'll give out. You have to be 21 to apply. Zhe Wiz
  18. I use a Fusion Firearms 1911 longslide in 10mm. BUT, I reload and I only use it as a backup in case my shotty jams or if I'm hunting with my ML during gun season I take it along in case I need a follow-up. I have killed a friend's shotgun-wounded deer with it, but otherwise haven't had to use it. Except for that damn coyote I missed with it last week. :-( Zhe Wiz
  19. Unlikely anyone would even notice, but you never know. Good idea on the print-out. I'll check out the other thread. Zhe Wiz
  20. Now THAT is very interesting! This site says its not: http://bowmountedrangefinder.com/leupold-vendetta-legal-states/ I cannot vouch for the legitimacy of that site though. I like YOUR source better. I had always assumed the reason was its ability to project a laser on target. I like the response from the DEC though. Sorry to have hijacked the thread, but VERY useful information on the Vendetta too. Looks like I'll have a new toy coming this archery season, hopefully 10/1 this year. Zhe Wiz
  21. Hmmm, Vendetta is illegal in NY. :-( Cool idea on the mount though!
  22. It's currently the same - 500 feet, though the DEC's plan is to reduce that distance for bows and xbows. Zhe Wiz
  23. The notes are available from the Public Safety Committee meeting recommending this go to the legislature: http://tompkinscountyny.iqm2.com/Citizens/FileOpen.aspx?Type=15&ID=1504 Some misinformation in there (500 yards vs 500 FEET) but hopefully that's a typo and not REALLY what Sheriff Lansing said. Overall pretty positive, and some good points made in support of rifles. Please do email these guys! The plan was announced on local radio this morning, so you can be sure the anti's will be making some noise, we need to make sure our side is heared as well! Zhe Wiz
  24. EXACTLY what I'm afraid of. :-( Someone once died from a rifle bullet that bounced off 2 rocks, a tree and a Prius...no way they can allow such dangerous weapons of mass destruction anywhere near Ithaca or Lansing. :-) I have a .243 and a 7mm-08 that are itching to be used!! I'd love to (almost) retire my 12 gauge. Zhe Wiz
