  1. I have a couple of cams and i am getting some pictures but only 1 buck and he seems to stay far enough away from the cameras that i can't get a good look at his rack. i'll start you off with the doe and move on to the camera shy buck after. this the original pick that at first i thought was a doe until i enhanced the image into these and this was a couple nights later can't tell if there are antlers or not one second it looks like it the next it doesn't
  2. The last 2 deer I shot with my .243 there was only one hole but they were DRT. I was using 100gr. Corlokts. I didn't see much to complain about until an acquaintance had to rain on my parade and ask what I was going to do if I didn't get so lucky next time and actually had to track one. 2 holes are better than 1 when it comes to tracking. I bought a 30-06 and still haven't decided if I am going to use it this season. I very confident in my shooting abilities with the old .243 and haven't gotten much range time with the 30-06 and am a firm believe the shot placement is king.
  3. Never been lucky enough to get more than one. And if I am lucky enough to get one we go through one a year.
  4. In 6A I have yet to talk to a qualified land owner that has been denied for a dmp. I have on the other hand talked to hunters with 5 preference points that have been denied. The way it was explained to me was qualified land owners get them on a first come first serve basis and everyone else get put in the lottery for the remaining dmps. In the 4 years I applied I was always denied and there never seems to be any left over permits for 6A.
  5. Thanks. I hunt in westville about 3 miles from the border of 5A.
  6. I have been hunting for 14 years and am here to see learn from others expience. I have been around hunting all my life but feel you can never learn enough about hunting and different things that are successful for others might just be a good thing to add to your own arsenal. I live in 5A and hunt a little in 5A but the majority of my time is spent in 6A. It also help to know what other people in your area are seeing in different parts of the season. I can already see there is a wealth of knowledge here and it is gonna be good place to be.
  7. I live in constable also and am also left handed it isn't that bad shooting a right handed rifle I have never shot a left handed rifle.I looked at a couple earlier this year and it felt weird to work the bolt on a LH rifle after shooting RH all my life. You might also want to consider a lever action as an ambidextrous rifle. A great place to try is Dicks country store in Churubusco they had a couple used LH rifles in .270 or 30-06 in march when I looking to upgrade from my .243.
  8. When I was 6 or 7 years old i was ruined on the texas heart shot for life. My Father shot a beautiful 11 point broadside lung/heart shot. When he retrieved the deer it had been shot 5 times in the butt. The area he hunted was about 25-30 square miles of private land that had people hired to walk the "lines" during hunting season to keep tresspasser off. There were only a handfull of people allowed to hunt the land so he knew that one of his coworkers had "completely missed" that deer 2 weeks earlier. The deer had suffered for 2 weeks and was so full of infection it wasn't funny. My father was issued another tag from the ECO when they came to inspect the deer upon request. I will take a lot of different shots but the texas heart shot is one shot can't bring myself to take. It might be an effective shot for some but I don't have the confidence in myself to take the shot and not have the deer suffer.
