  1. Ok so I got my new viper sd and I didn't have to pay half. So now I am looking at accessories I know I want to get the foot rest. My problem now is I would like to have bags to store stuff in. I really like the summit deluxe side bags but the reviews are terrible. Is the fabric really that flimsy? If so what does everyone use instead of the side bags?
  2. I think they learn where certain scents should be and shouldn't be. If a scent is somewhere that it shouldn't be they get nervous. a couple examples are I have been on smoke break at work and had deer walk about 5 feet from me and just stand the and watch me smoke my cigarette and it not bother them but they have learned that they are safe there. I have had yearlings follow my path to my stand with their nose to the ground in early muzzleloader and when they reached my stand they just stood there and watched me for 15-20 minutes. I have never had a mature deer follow my path without the use of a drag line. deer learn to associate certain sounds and smells with it being good and bad for them. I have seen deer running toward the sound of a chainsaw and they will stand there and watch you cut trees. it is like a dinner bell to them. I have tracks in my backyard all the time so I set a trail cam. deer pattern everything and learn the safest times to go certain places. what I learned from my trailcam is the deer would literally come out into my yard 10 minutes after I left for work and would come and go all evening and would leave with in minutes of me getting home.
  3. I work in Norwood the next town over. I live an hour away. This one always gets me. If I pronounce it the way it should be everyone at work looks at me like I'm an idiot. If I pronounce it their way I feel like an idiot because I know how to spell for the most part.
  4. to be legal all you have to do is take the primer out of the gun. Personally I would leave the charge in for the week but I use pellets. with loose powder there is a chance the powder will settle in the gun and compress behind the bullet leaving a gap and an inconsistency. I don't know what others recommend for this. to completely remove the charge from the gun just remove the breach plug and push the charge out with your ram rod. or you can do it the old fashion way and use a ball puller.
  5. I use 2 50 gr. t7 pellets and a 250gr. tc shockwave and a winchester 209 primer in my cva wolf. I have bullets touching at 100 yards. I worked for a long time to get that accuracy. I started with a traditions buckhunter that was handed down to me and could never get it to group. I went out this year and bought the cva wolf and couldn't get it to group so I started researching muzzleloader accuracy tips. the best advise I can give is once you find the load your muzzleloader likes keep everything as consistent as possible. run a spit patch through after every shot. keep the powder levels as consistent as possible. start the bullet as straight as possible, seat it on top of the powder consistently. and make sure to keep your ML clean. I believe my biggest problem with my buckhunter was that I never took the time to find the load it liked. I would throw 100gr. of loose powder and and whatever the cheapest bullets were at walmart and expected it to shoot well. I was so frustrated with muzzleloaders I was ready to give it up. now I am confident enough in my wolf I left the 30-06 at home a couple times this year during regular season. Good Luck
  6. Voted. Looks like he still needs 7 votes. Good luck
  7. I have no idea. My father used to work on a large parcel of land as a "care taker" he also sold hunting and fishing liscences and knew the game warden very well. the "park" he worked for hired on extra people during hunting season just to walk the property lines that bordered state land to watch for and keep tresspasser off of the property. the game warden would come anytime he was called with a tresspassing report and he would just laugh and give the person a ticket. After the ticketed person left he would pull the employee aside and tell them that he would respond to every call and it didn't bother him it was job security but if they really wanted to make an impact on these people who were clearly ignoring the posted signs to call the state troopers and the fine would go from $250 to $1000. I don't know why but that was what we were always told. although this was 15 years ago things may have changed.
  8. 1. The game warden used to tell us for trespassers call the state troopers because the $250 fine dec gives out automatically goes to a $1000 fine if the troopers respond. 2. They left a big one out of this article. "CLARE — The chairman of the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority’s board of directors was charged Oct. 19 with discharging a firearm across a public highway, a violation, by New York State Department of Conservation officers. Frederick J, Carter, 66, Clark Street, Ogdensburg, is accused of shooting at a deer on the side of a road at 4:55 p.m., according to DEC. To avoid the criminal charge, Mr. Carter agreed to a civil penalty, which came with a $200 fine, Mr. Carter said. Also with Mr. Carter was Edward Carter, 77, and Charles J. Schaver, 78, who also were charged with discharging a firearm across a public highway Edward Carter was also charged with possessing a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle. All charges were settled with civil fines, Mr. Carter said. He said he was driving on Tooley Pond Road when he saw a large buck on the side of the road. What Mr. Carter said he didn’t know was that it was not a real deer. “It was a wonderful decoy,” he said. He said his brother, Edward, got out of the truck and began firing at the fake animal. He and Mr. Schaver were charged even though he said they did not fire. “It’s one of those things that happens,” Mr. Carter said. “It’s like getting a speeding ticket.”
  9. Serial numbers weren't required until 1968. google gun control act of 1968. Sorry i can't help you with the shotgun.
  10. Dealt with a few people who deserved the idiot award in previous years. first one was on neighboring property the had a huge bait pile and killed more than his share of deer every year. at least 3 a week all season. I am assuming he was afraid that I was going to get one deer that he wouldn't have gotten and he spread moth balls all along the field and woods I had permission to hunt that year. The more recent one is on a different property that I now hunt. the neighboring owner gave me permission to hunt his 60 acres that is attached to our 15 which is very nice of him. but for the last 2 years he goes through and makes as much noises as possible all season long and every time we go into our stands on our property there is a fresh pile of cigarettes butts under and in our stands. and I have this funny feeling he is the one that stole one of our stands the was about 50 yards from the propery line 2 weeks before season started.
  11. I have been lucky. I have been hunting deer with rifle and muzzleloader for 10 years and haven't lost one yet. The first deer I shot was a gut shot on a doe not knowing any better I chased her through the woods in about 1'-2' of snow for about an hour. she kept bedding down but not long enough to get another shot off. when she finally laid down long enough I ended her suffering.
  12. The adapter for the iPad doesn't work with the iPhone. I was hoping it did because the iPad has a nice big screen to view pictures on but is a bit bulky to carry while hunting.
  13. From the looks of it the only difference between the viper sd and the viper sdc it that the sdc's aluminum is camo, it has upgraded backpack straps, and it cost $100 more. Personally I would go with viper sd. and if the 2 upgrades I didn't get really bothered me that much I would do them myself a whole lot cheaper.
  14. Actually that's not a road. It is a small field with a pond in the middle and more woods on the other side. There is something running through the background. I tried to enhance the video to see what it was but I didn't have any luck.
  15. played around with video editing software on my laptop and condensed 3- 45sec clips into 1 20 second clip.
  16. try going to google and typing in (yourcounty) ny tax maps. I have been looking at tax maps online for a months or two. once you get to the site it allows you to search by town, owner, address, or parcel id.
  17. I started out with a wildgame ir5d it took decent pics. I put it out for a week after christmas in my back yard and got about 15 pics. I put it out for about 3 weeks in september and it died. I tried fresh batteries it will not turn on. I bought a bushnell trophy cam in september and have had it out since and was getting 5x the pics than the wildgame. the picture quality on the trophy cam is great. The night pics are a little dark but the first thing i do when i pull the sd card is "enhance" the pictures with photo editing software. one click of the mouse and i can get clear views of things I couldn't tell were there before. I am now experimenting with the video mode. I am going to pulled the card tomorrow with the first set of videos.
  18. I was was always leery of climber myself but my uncle finally talked me into trying his last week. Once I got it hooked up to a tree and started climbing I found it to be very simple to use. I also found it a lot safer and stable than I ever thought a climber would be. Needless to say I am getting a summit viper sd for Christmas and other than my wooden stands that are already hung i will be hunting from a climber from now on.
  19. I found a new Viper SD on ebay for $229.99 with free shipping and I am going to go halves on it. so it looks like thats what I am getting.
  20. I'm not trying to be rude but I have been packing a 15' ladder stand in and out of the wood this season when I want to hunt the location the old stand was stolen from. Trust me when I say weight is not an issue. I think any climber will be lighter and not as bulky to get through the woods with. Also I am not buying it, it will be a christmas present and I don't like asking for things to begin with so I can't bring myself to ask for a stand that cost $100 more than what I was told they wanted to spend. If I had the money I would definitely go with the viper SS.
  21. I always thought climbers were more of a pita than they worth and figured how stable/safe can they actually be. My uncle finally talked me into trying his climber( an older one with blades on both sides of the tree). I was actually impressed with how well it preformed. Now I had ladder stand stolen before season and am thinking a climber would be the best way to prevent theft. If it isn't there how can they steal it? I have it narrowed down to the summit viper classic and the gorilla grey back climber. I know that everyone complains that they are both "heavy". I won't be going on any long hikes with it anywhere I hunt so I am not to worried about the wieght. I am more wondering pros and cons for both or if one just performs that much better.
  22. We had one that hang around the house when I was a kid we called sox. The bottom half of all four legs were white.
  23. About a week ago at 3:30pm I saw a big 6 walk out of the woods and start walking to a group of 5 does about 100 yards away , he could have just been going after the apples they were eating. Yesterday at 1:45pm I saw a 3 point eating on the side of the road with 2 does eating about 250-300 yards away, he didn't seem to have any interest in them. Both sightings were in 6a. Neither was near where I hunt. No signs whatsoever in my hunting location.
