  1. plus there will be the guys who arent willing to give up the shotgun due to fact of not wanting to buy another gun.
  2. shotguns and the slugs created nowadays are capable of 200yrds with the right shooter behind it
  3. In most areas it shouldnt really change how we hunt, its not typical for bucks or any deer for that matter to be out in wide open fields in gun season, guys still have to remember that shots are typically within 100yrds due to thick cover and i can only imagine how deer drives will go with rilfes...i guess that part is a little scary.
  4. i think that corn looks great for being broadcasted, i have always been skeptical to broadcast corn in the past. i got lucky this year to have someone drill it for me. so far it seems to be getting a great start, plenty of rain thats for sure....
  5. Yeah like i said really no bedding areas on our actual farm in fact most of it consists of fields. and there is defiantly no early morning pressure activity. thanks for making me feel better lol
  6. My family has started a new trend of walking our property just about every evening with our two dogs, i know what its probably doing to the locale deer especially being late in the evenings. Will this negatively affect the hunting for this upcoming season? we have always used the property but this is pretty consistent i'm afraid this could push deer away from the area, its only a 30 acre parcel so i know the deer aren't living here just more likely feeding and passing through but still it concerns me for the future. Or am i just being paranoid?
  7. This is a email i received earlier in the week, those opposed to the new season changes in certain areas of the state should follow the link and let your voice be heard. Fellow NYB members, The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is in the process of implementing a plan to increase the antlerless deer harvest in a dozen wildlife management units across the state by allowing the taking of antlerless only (no bucks) during the first fifteen days (October 1st - 15th) of the early archery season. If your area is not included yet, it may very well be added in the future. This proposal is much more than an antlerless deer issue (for more information on this topic Click Here). This proposal not only will take away hunting opportunities from bowhunters, but it is destined to fail since archers account for only 15% of the annual total deer take. If the DEC truly wants to increase the antlerless deer take why would they choose an implement that has the least impact? The DEC has several times tried to implement an early MZ season however their attempts did not succeed as the hunting community agreed that firearms should not be included in the early bow season. Since there is little doubt that this most recent proposal will fail, is the DEC setting the stage to once again attempt to place the muzzleloader in the early archery season? Except for select urban areas, the DEC has stated many times that “…bowhunting is not the most effective way to reduce the antlerless deer population”. So what has changed? Bowhunters still account for only 15% of the total deer take and as such this proposal to utilize the early archery season to increase the antlerless deer harvest will not succeed. NYB is asking that you take action now by “clicking here”. Thank You, Richard Kirschner NYB President
  8. With the apparent need to take more deer they better pass it! hahaha
  9. hoping we get the official word sometime in June!
  10. Trying to decide if i want to switch broad-heads, i currently use grimreapers whitetail special's 2inch with success but i believe my bow setup just isn't setup correct for enough penetration for a larger cutting mechanical, frankly i think i have just gotten lucky finding the two bucks that i did shoot, poor shot placement was a factor too. I was just wondering if anyone has tryed any of the slicktrick broadheads?
  11. How about a Sept 15th opener just for antler-less and Oct 1st for the regular bow and the development of a program such as the HUSH program that Iowa utilizes, guys aren't going to be as involved if they have to pay for the tags to take the doe first and than pay to have it donated. As previously stated, there has to be more incentive for guys to shoot doe in these areas.
  12. yeah i'm hoping my clover plot and the surrounding Ag will hold them off. I'm excited for the possibilities.
  13. ok that's probably about the same size as my plots. have you had success in the past with this size corn plot? i'm worried the deer will hammer the corn before it even begins an ear of corn.
  14. love the idea, i'm assuming your corn plots are +1 acre though?
  15. Mother nature has her own way of keeping populations in check also.....just saying.
  16. I believe you have a valid point, and yes i should open my eyes to donating although i have heard of places denying intake of deer if they have taken in too many throughout the season. my fear is that everyone is now all the sudden going to jump to shooting a lot of doe and in a few years the population will be too low, i think the lack of a true way to measure the population and take every year is a major factor. Would check stations at all help cure the inaccurate numbers for the annual take?
  17. im going to skip this idea for this year, this is my first year for corn so i want to see what kinda of yield i get. I think i will add a brassica plot near the corn plot in july, should be a killer late season area.
  18. i agree self management is a rising thing nowadays, i am one of those guys who is basically looking for bone and not shooting a doe until MAYBE the end of the season, but does that make me a bad conservationist, i think not. Its a personal choice whether or not to shoot a doe i typically don't because my family just doesn't need the meat, and if me and my father both shoot a buck than that's plenty of meat if only one of us does than that's fine also. i'd rather not see guys just shooting and wasting doe because the DEC says the population is too high. Wait till October and November when this site is filled with guys who are asking/saying, "where are the deer?", "No deer in my area" than we'll talk about the current populations. And we all know there are plenty of hunting parties not using and certainly not reporting their harvests, those large parties of guys doing deer drives are not tagging all those deer i can guarantee you that, not too mention all the deer poached. Another reason i tend not to shoot doe especially on my home farm is that my neighbor is not afraid to shoot anything, no matter size or sex. Although i don't totally agree, i believe it is a personal choice and i truly believe he uses all the meat, i don't believe that everyone uses all the meat in every case of a deer killed.
  19. Also where would i get a bag of soybeans? i am in the WNY area.
  20. A local farmer will be doing two small plots of corn for me (less than acre each) i know this pretty risky because the deer may eat the corn before it even reaches full growth but the planting is no cost to me. Anyways i have read about broadcasting in soybeans with the row planted corn and i was wondering if anyone has experimented with this method and how it worked?
  21. Yes i jsut did some in early spring, you want the tree to continue to grow so that is why you leave enough bark system attached so the tree will continue to produce leaves which creates cover and the tree will grow obviously at a slow rate and produces some winter browse. I didn't do mine necessarily to create bedding but to up open and dry out a swamp area while also providing "false" cover, which just means the area looks like heavy cover.
  22. Yeah not surprising, you have to copy the email link into your email message before it will bring up an actually email address...they don't make it easy. I hope you don't mind i also copied your message and sent it to Mr.Swift, that was another reason for my last post i believe you have yours addressed to Mr.Schiavone.
