  1. I still have to draw. Ranges maybe up 5 to 10 yards for the average hunter. Better arrows and heads just lead to better efficiency. How is the line crossed?
  2. it's just for fun bill. not everything has to be serious.
  3. It should be that or a simple doctors note. Sure some may abuse the doctors note, but whatever. If you're that intent on using a crossbow you're probably using one illegally anyhow. Make it easy to upload a note to your request for a full season permit. I can't imagine the review strain after the first few years would be substantial and could be paid for by the increased revenue. Also quit with the mz bs and make them all take the archery safety course if this is truly "archery".
  4. Purely hypothetical and just for fun question. If you could hunt turkeys with a rifle, would you? What caliber and gun would you go with?
  5. It's hard to know what deer this is without the antlers, but they're pretty patternable right now. He's been hanging with another buck so I'm pretty sure I have pics of his other side and no obvious marks. I'm not ruling out bullet or arrow wound. I am leaning towards maybe a puncture from a barbed wire fence or something like that maybe. Also, to phade's point it will be interesting to see if this has just started to fester and will it grow. I'm only leaving 2 cams up to watch for trespassers, but I'm sure I'll get more pics in the future.
  6. I like just about all genres of music except maybe screaming death rock and kpop. But 80's rock seems like it'd be pretty far down on my list to vibe too when stoned. Pink floyd all day, but black sabbath sounds better suited for working out than chilling out.
  7. A lot of guys on here claiming that the modern compound is so easy to shoot. Yeah I'm not going to argue that it's not the hardest thing in the world to learn. I'd also argue that backyard 20 yards and flipflops is very different than in a stand in 24* and a big buck slightly quartering away 25' in the air. And yeah nerves can get the crossbow hunter too right? What's the one thing that crossbow hunter doesn't have to do? Draw. There's no level of skill that eliminates the movement in drawing on a deer and knowing when to draw. If you haven't been busted on the draw, you haven't hunted long enough haha.
  8. this is a forum to discuss hunting. Nobody is changing the world here. Because something more serious is going on, we can't escape in the offseason and talk about deer hunting? Sorry mom, we're canceling your mothers day party, there's too many illegal border crossings and we just can't see it in ourselves to do anything else while this is happening.
  9. wolc you've read enough of my posts to know that I am in favor of making it simple for the elderly and disabled. So stop, we've done this dance and it doesn't work with me.
  10. see now you just shot yourself in your foot. The key driver behind the crossbow debate is that every hunter should be allowed to hunt how they want. Yet here you are assuming that all hunters are out trying to feed their families. I bet there isn't a single hunter on this board who hunts because their family would starve without it. This isn't to say that many of us (myself included) aren't meat hunters, but gtfo with that "we're just trying to feed our families bs". Think about what some of these members invest in cams, leases and plots. It's to kill big bucks. period. Now to your first point. If we're out here to use the most efficient and convenient weapon, why do we have an archery season? That NYBOWHUNTER is why I'm anti-crossbow. You said you didn't like that reason, but it's a reason none the less. Archery is meant to be a challenge. The crossbow steps over that line.
  11. it's more about the weed killers and what not for me. But I like a nice lush and full lawn idk...
  12. one could argue that the SAFE act violates the constitution for god's sakes and somehow that shit is still in place.
  13. oh i get it. but it's a federal check, not a state check. And how are all the other sites and gun owners handling this? might all be a moot point if sleepy joe makes it legal federally.
  14. uh yeah captain obvious, isn't it clear that i don't like them and that's why i dont want them lol
  15. that is a totally subjective take. None of us have any facts or data to show why archery hunting is up, hell you don't even need an archery tag for crossbow, so unless we can find the sales by implement by season we can't even continue this. glad you're at least off your "its dying" stump though.
  16. another interesting graph on the health of deer hunting in NY
  17. come on man, look at the trend. Lows in the mid 50's, highs in the 90's. Statistically speaking we have grown. Here's a graph i just made. It may not be a boom, but it's hardly indicative of a dying sport. And these include all hunting. I bet archery is significantly higher.
  18. good probability. Any causes you know of?
  19. this isn't unique to NY and none of the other dozen states that have legalized it have had this issue.
  20. Did my first mow on tuesday. I'm #2 in the neighborhood as far as I can tell. But applied my scotts step 1 in mid march when we got our first warm spell, so that fertilizer really kicks things in gear. Hoping it does a better job on the crab grass this year than it did last.
  21. If you can now hunt 2 weeks a year with a crossbow (the best weeks btw), how is not expanding the season limiting hunter access? Who isn't buying a tag or crossbow because they can't hunt the whole season and also sitting out gun season? i looked long and hard and couldn't find it. I know i've seen it though. Probably in the management report pdf. But if harvest numbers are up over 10k, one would assume so are licenses.
  22. is math an issue for you, bowhunting numbers are up 17%... and even more vs the 5 year average. How is this indication of a dying sport?
  23. IF we're using 06 and 07 as a low point and even if you excluded 19, the numbers have generally risen since 2011. How is this data BAD?
  24. From some other pictures I have, I'm certain this is a buck, I don't know which one as they've all dropped but these are the first I've seen of him with this wound. My first guess is a puncture of some kind, but I don't think arrow and given it just showed up recently I don't think antler. thoughts?
