  1. i was a browtine away my friend. And no, a 1.5 is not just as dumb. Converting to human years, that's like saying an 11 year old is just as dumb as a 4 year old.
  2. for what it's worth The crossbow law expires on December 31, 2012, unless the Legislature and Governor agree to an extension. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/68802.html
  3. i dont understand your point. if you're refering to the bb thread. a 1.5 year old 150lb. 5 point is not the same thing. if you want to talk about ethics i passed on the 9 point that came out 15 seconds later. had him at 6 yards broadside. Most hunters would have taken him too. I could easily have got a tag for him as well. Any archery kill is a good kill. Just leave the BBs alone is all I ask. the deer i shot the deer i passed on
  4. with a 2 month old and a very tired wife, sometimes you have to let your standards slide. 150 lb. fullly dressed deer and decent tines. not a baby.
  5. im not sure they're tresspassing though if the land owner doesn't seem to care.
  6. leave a note. the question you should ask youself is "how would you feel if someone put a stand up near you". sounds like they're gun stands. might not be a big deal during bow? in addition, if you're looking for exclusiveness, i'd recommened asking the owner if you can lease and that you will post it for him as well.
  7. fine. you got me. but if you'd rather use a bow or xbow while others have shotguns/rifles or smoke polls, be my guest.
  8. i actually had 3 doe bedded down 30 yards from me. must have snuck in while it was dark. and one rip on the can and one doe blew and they freaked. they came back, but i've always been leary of any calls unless it's your last resort.
  9. 8F started to pick up 2 weekends ago with great sign and frustrated bucks, not a lot of doe in heat. i took a 150lb 5 point chasing 3 doe only to have a nice big 9 walk out seconds later. That's what i get i guess, my first son is 2 months old and i knew i couldn't be picky this year. this past week the weather has been bad but a lot of people i know have seen a nice pickup in activity on sunday.
  10. hunting isn't easy. 90% of it is prep work as well. finding a good spot. putting in a stand, trimming the shooting lanes. creating an approach trail that doesn't cross runs. cleaning the runs so they keep using them, mock scrapes etc. I knew a guy that became frustrated with hunting and one day while talking i found out he didn't use scent free body/hair wash. there's a lot you can do to improve your odds, but they still have to go by you. i'm thinking your state land is heavily hunted. i hunted state land once and it was a waste of time in my opinion. nys hunting has also changed over the past few decades. normally the vast acres of land were where all the deer were at. now it seems the burbs hold some giants.
  11. i think that might be ilegal in most states.
  12. that's not what i meant. it would have been nice to take that with a bow or gun and put it on your wall. that's what i meant. not to mention the collision repair bill he has now
  13. this. he will move right onto to the next doe that comes into heat as it's happening left and right now.
  14. if he ate all he killed, that'd be fine. he doens't. this board is ok with killing just for the sake of killing? legal or not? I should post the pics of his neighbor who wounded a 4 point (have it on trailcam) then tresspassed on my property to find it. hung up toilet paper everywhere. didn't remove it. when he was called out he didn't even appologize. woah woah woah. this is an internet forum. i'm not pushing my beliefs on anyone. forums are for sharing, learning, debating and discussion. and it looks like this board could use a little more activity considering its prime time hunting season and there's not a ton of posts going on. You want me to leave, I will. i've been hunting with bow and gun since i was legally able. I'm 29. That's enough experience. I have a few on the wall, many more capped and as I stated i've taken plenty of doe and even a bb when I was younger. In addition i will restate that i agree that if deer are hard to come by in your area, you're feeding your family with venison, or you're new to hunting any kill is great (especially one with a stick and string). But the experienced hunter with lots of nice private land who "cant tell the difference" must be the same hunter shooting at humans. You need to know your target, have a good shot and you should know what you're shooting at. If you have meat in the freezer and extra "doe" tags, then shoot a doe. that's all i'm saying. btw, where's the youth hunt debate? just learned about a guy at work that smoked a nice 8 and put his daughters tag on it. :)
  15. same reason they sell crossbows and 3 barbed broadheads. both of which are illegal. You can also buy a pipe or bong to smoke weed which is illegal to use, but it's not illegal to sell and people buy them. My 3rd analogy? fireworks. PA residence can't buy them, NYS residence cant bring them into the state, but yet there's superstores at every exit. lol.
  16. what a shame. that's a beautiful deer.
  17. i work with a guy that will shoot the smaller deer becaues they taste better. which i agree with. just wish he wasn't shooting the bb's. he's a meat hunter and that's fine.
  18. apparently this board is very literal, and needs everything spelled out. I meant that he shoots 2 or 3 button bucks a year. I myself shoot atleast 2 bucks a year. but there's a difference. If you dont believe there's a difference than i cant help you. How about slaughterer? does that work? Listen if you guys get your rocks off taking out .5 year olds then that's fine. Last weekend i had a big mature doe walk by my stand at 10 yards. followed closely behind her was a late drop which still had spots. You want my opinion? taking either is not ethical. If you cant supress the urge to kill to wait for a 1.5 year old doe or buck then that's you. I can. Maybe i'm fortunate to hunt some nice land and you all aren't. I just dont see what's so wrong with letting them grow up? Can any of you honestly say that a bb was the only deer you saw all season? if so, then i suppose i'll give you a pass. a nice 120lb 1.5 year old doe is great eating. shooting bb's in rush makes me chuckle. i should post some of the bucks my uncle pulls from there.
  19. the key point you missed was being able to tell the difference. knowing its a button buck and pulling the trigger is different then accidently shooting. My point was, if you're experienced, you should know. I know a lot of young hunters or inexperienced hunters who never get to see bucks. I know a neighbor that shoots 2 or 3 a year. Why? cause he's a murderer. doesn't even eat the meat. I worry about the harvests of others when it affects our sport. i'm fortunate to hunt some good private land and was taught how to hunt by a family that has several generations of hunting. I cant imagine i'd still be hunting if i never got to see a buck. it gets discouraging. we talk about youth hunts and getting more people invovled in hunting, but then you're all ok with shooting bb's that one day might be a new hunters first buck you're being hipocritical.
  20. I'd like the deer in NYS to improve in genetics and size? Keep shotting bb's and skippers and you decrease the likelyhood of larger 6's and nice 8's. QDM...
  21. Not being able to tell the difference between a bb and a doe is sad for any experienced hunter. at the age of 19 i shot my 1 and only bb and that's because again, i didn't know better. If you accidently shoot a bb with a bow, then you really have an issue. I'm fine with beginners shooting bb's but not the experieneced hunter. There are so many does out there, that there's no need. Most hunters end up shooting bb's because they're the dumbest deer in the woods. We all know that if you can fool a mature doe, you're doing something right.
