Some people will say no for different reasons like not wanting a restriction put on their hunting, another is that some are scared they wont be able to shoot a deer for a year or two, another is that its not a good enough management tool. All reasons are understandable. This is not the best management tool but its the only one that has taken place in these 4 zones. IMO given the chance it works from what I see. A big thing also has been the lottery Dmps also that have given this progrom a boost in seeing more bucks. More fawns protected that actually live to 1 and a half years old. I have always seen deer where I hunt, but before all this started it was mainly does and fawns and the occasional year and a half old buck.. It took a couple of years of not shooting a buck, but now the year and a half old bucks are all over and I do get to see some racks every year for the last three years. I'm not shooting 150inch bucks cause they are not as abundant as the younger deer, but the 100 inch deer now is a common sight. Great accomplishment. I thank the DEC for starting this program in my area. It has made for some exciting hunting!!!

Someone in the area has released them by us. Not sure if its DEC or a club or what, but for two years in a row they where on the sides of the road and on the lawn and sometimes even in the woods. On the edges of your fields next to your wood line you will probably start seeing grouse. I always kick up one or two on the way into the woods

The cva are good and affordable. I have two of those. Can't complain, They shoot good. Keeping them clean is the most important part. You do not want to keep any sign of powder residue in them when they are stored. The powder pits the inside of the barrel. Everytime you finish hunting with it you have to clean it. Especially after shooting it.

Small food plots in the woods
Fairgame replied to Fairgame's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Im going to get it now at the book store -
I have two areas in the woods that are about 30 feet wide and about 100 feet long going east to west that get a decent amount of sunlight throughout the day. Has anyone had any success in growing a plot that small? If so what did you plant and what worked the best. With all this talk about food plots I'm thinking of starting these 2 areas on the property to see how they would work out.

Until Ars, and lottery dmps came into our area there wasnt any type of deer management program. So what are we waiting for to start working. It hasnt hurt the hunting in our area it has only made it better. More deer in the woods and more bucks and also what is not important to some but it is to others "bigger racks". I have had an excellent hunting season for the past 3 years that these ARs and Lottery DMPs in place. Not because of shooting a big buck, cause that doesnt happen every year, but because of the amount of deer, the better buck to doe ratio from what I seen. Its alot more exciting in the woods lately. Everyone probably has their doughts before programs like this start, me being one of them. Now that they are in place I would hate for them to take it away. These are the only things in place right now to make a difference. It is the easiest way for everyone to determine whether a buck is legal or not. I'm not saying every area should have them, cause every area is different. But where hunters in certain areas want it and it wouldnt hurt to have it, majority should win. Isnt that the way it should be? Reguardless if a small percentage of hunters show up, that small percentage represents everone else. Just like voting for the Pres Not everyone votes but a president is still picked after all votes are collected.

Quality affordable scopes? What do you use?
Fairgame replied to burmjohn's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I haven't come across vortex but if there arent any negatives from customer reviews thats a good thing. I use to be strictly Leupold but know I also use Nikon. I have 2 nikon scopes and I have no problems with them. I do have to say that my Leupold varixlll 50mm4.5x14 are amazing scopes. Clarity is amazing in low light, rain, fog and snow. The price of these scopes is the only thing I dont like. -

Whats a Big NY Buck? Whats an Average NY Buck?
Fairgame replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
Thats right Doc, If we do an overall buck average it wouldn't be anywhere near those #s. Probably more like 10 inches. If we are talking about the average possible rack buck then the picture I posted is something to base an average off of in my area. But then again what is a rack buck? I guess it differs with everyone. Well the picture I posted is an average of my interpretation of a rack buck average in the last few years. -
This is a piebald that we had on our trail camera. He was around for 2 seasons and we havent seen him since middle of bow season last year. I have seen a few in that area. One was a doe that was very blochy like a cow.

The deer in this pic are an average of what you can see. Getting them is another thing -

Whats a Big NY Buck? Whats an Average NY Buck?
Fairgame replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
Correct a 90-100 inch deer is a good deer. It is a good possibility of seeing one during the hunting season where we have been hunting, that why I was calling it an average deer. A 120 - 130 isnt the norm to see, but they are there. By the way, those are some nice deer you have hanging there. -
Whats a Big NY Buck? Whats an Average NY Buck?
Fairgame replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
Average deer for me is a deer about the same size as the ones I already have hanging. Big deer are anything bigger than I already have hanging. Sorry . Average deer probably about 90 to 100 inch, big deer probably over 100 inch. Biggest I have seen in our area alive is probably 120- 130 which is on a video I have somewhere. I have seen alot bigger at the taxadermist from our area too. -
I believe it will be a good year. My dad called me last week and said that he is already seeing bucks on the property. One of the bucks was over 5 inches off the top off his head. He said that the buck already had his beams and browtines. It is only the beggining of June. Hope to see him on the trail camera in a few weeks.

All it would need is siamese cable which is rg59 and a pair of low voltage wire together from the camera to the recorder in the house. From the recorder to your internet conncetion or computer. I have strung it up to 1000 feet so far and it works. If you want to get fancy you can even put a PTZ camera which lets you zoom and move the camera around. It just a different wire. Your main connections are all in the house.

Try calling frontier, Im not sure what they have. I know they have internet but not sure how fast.
-
The way I want to do it the only monthly charge you have is internet which you use for other things anyway? Those other ones lock you into a contract and you have to pay for it and you cant use it for anything else.

Deer scents / lures - What do you use? What works in NY for you?
Fairgame replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
I try using that stuff only as a cover around my stand. Dont know if it really works. what has been working for me is a grunt tube and a doe bleat -
Once I get internet in the house upstate I am going to string up some camera wire to one of the busiest spots on the property and get a live feed to my computer in cali wherever and whenever. Since Im an electrician why not? A few cameras and I could see whats going on all the time.
