  1. May have been a bad choice on my part to take "the" shot. But I had a good feeling about it saw where the deer was going knew what was beyond my target and for the record I only fired 1 shot. Not like I opened up a war zone on it. And the deer was hit and would have come home with me if the other people I was hunting with we're decent sportsman. Instead the guy that saw her first blew her apart. Wasted any chance of good meat with a 300 weather by from 10 yards away when all he had to do is walk over and cut the throat. She wasn't going to run off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  2. Didn't see a damn one. Lol. But the chili turned out great. Walked around at Fairfield state lands tried the sit n watch but still nothing. Got out late tho maybe that's why. Still a lot of cover for them to hide in may have been a few that didn't get seen. Always next time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  3. Forgot to mention the fact that last year I missed the cutoff and was denied when they reopened for secondary tags. This year was just no tag for me. Last year was my own fault. Too right on money and working so I couldn't get my license in time for first round. Guess I should have added that part before. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  4. Most scope packages will specify shotgun or rifle scope. Do not, I repeat DO NOT put a rifle scope on that bad boy. The extra recoil will most definitely ruin the scope by seasons end. The scopes made for shotguns are made for the stronger recoil. I tried to go cheap on my mossberg 835 and just grabbed a cheap scope paid like 50$ and after about 1 box of shot shells I blew the crosshairs out. It's worth the time money and effort to get the shotgun scope and do it right. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  5. Verizon still has pay as you go phones also. They are available almost anywhere. Trac phone has very bad service in my area but Verizon and AT&T are covered great. No matter what you will find a dead spot on a map but its definitely a good idea to find something to take with you. A line of communication could be a lifesaver. 6. Going over to Fairfield state forest in the morning to see how the wildlife looks. With all the leaves still on the trees I guess ill take the ol' .410 out and see if I can't bag a few squirrels to add into the chili I just threw together for tomorrow evening. Got it low n slow in the crock pot n got the house smelling good. Gotta feeling its gonna be a good day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  7. for the last 3 years my wife has procrastinated until late sept to try to get into a Hunters Ed course. This year was no different and all in New York in our area have been filled up. A good sign for us hunters seeing that there are more people wanting to get into the sport and keep it alive, bad for the ones who need to get in them courses. Well i had a friend contact me via facebook who i have spoken to maybe 2 times since high school and he too was looking for some one to get him into the sport and help him out as he has always wanted to but his family just were not hunters. So i obliged and gave my word i would do all i could to help him find a saftey course, get him registered, help him get into the woods and get his first deer, so on and so fourth. Today i found a course in Sayre PA only about a 25-30 minute drive for my wife and about 10 min for my friend. Now they are both signed up for their saftey course on the 24-25 of sept and i can not wait to get out in the woods with both of them and help intoduce them to the world i have grown to love over the years. best part is even though i got denied for a dmp, maybe the wife will get one and i can fill it. lol either way im sure the both of them will shoot a deer this year before i do as id much rather see them enjoy the time out and close the deal where i have done it before. if you have not noticed im a little excited about this hunting season now. best of luck to all..
  8. deer walk past more dead animals in the woods than they realize. or maybe they do and just dont care. I remember one year i had shot a doe on opening day, i field dressed her right where she lay as i was on my grandparents land and they wanted it done that way. 2 days later i went to the same stand and shot a mature 6 point that was aged and going south. there were also a group of doe less than 25 yards from where the gut pile had been. They may just see it as natures course and think nothing of it. who knows and we may never know the truth but it makes the hunt that much more intersting.
  9. I don't know if your near didn't look to far into it but there is a vet in Newark valley and they train gun dogs. Well they have it posted I personally have not seen any of the dogs or their training practices but it may be something to look into if your nearby. If you need more info on them let me know ill look up the contact info for you and help out best I can. Or they may know someone in your area too. Best of luck. 10. Funny how I get rammed for asking a question on my first day actually as a member of this site but have been browsing the post and following it for about a year. I can see that it's true anytime you have a group your bound to get at least one a**hole. I simply asked if anyone had an extra tag they wouldn't be using. Not like I asked for you to part with your family farm, guns, and deer herd. Sorry I've had a little bad luck and haven't got a tag. I know another guy that was denied too. I was told its due to the lottery system. But even the lottery I have at least won a free ticket to try again. You seem to think I'm just asking for things, land, tags, ect. I'm also here to give my input on topics. Here to enjoy the fellow hunters, not to deal with petty bs like that. If you don't like what I have to say or ask font follow my post. It was a question and in my opinion it was a fair one. Not like I continue on and on begging for someone's only dmp only if it were extra that would not get used. 14. I agree. It's so peaceful getting out with no cell service. And the wife can't bug me to come home early. Lol. I think I get decent service in Fairfield state land but if I go up to jenksville I'm off the radar. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  15. just downloaded the tapatalk app on the iphone. cant wait to get out in the woods but i think where i hunt the re is no service so wont do me much good. as always good luck to all hunters this year and be safe. going out squirrel hunting / scouting monday morning maybe ill figure out how to upload pics..
  16. i hunted there last year and saw a bunch of bushytails.... saw lots of deer sign, saw someones tree stand but didnt look like anyone has touched it in a year. lol but NO DEER
  17. i dont use ground meat. tried it once and it just didnt have the same feel as sliced and dehydrated meat. personally i always take about 10lbs. of meat and slice it about 1/8 in thick and then marinade it for 2 days. if you want try this receipt. 1/4cup soy sauce 1/4cup worshishire sauce 2 tablespoons garlic salt, onion pwder, cajun spice(any cajun spice will work), red pepper flakes, black pepper. 2 teaspoons of brown sugar 2 cap fulls of liquid smoke mix all ingredients in a large bowl with a wisk. add meat strips, cover and plac ein fridge for 2 days. I turn the meat everytime i open the fridge for anything. just flip it around a little so all meat is constantly getting the juice on it. then either dehydrate or cook on lowest oven setting until dry. FYI- if you want it spicy, add black pepper or red pepper flakes when meat is laid out on racks for a spicy mix.
  18. if you can get in touch with some farmers in Newark Valley area they may let you hunt the land for ducks along the west branch of Owego Creek. I ahve thought about going out behind my place for some but only ever see 1 or 2 hanging out in the corner. always see them flying over the area and coming down in the creek..
  19. my wife bought me the Savage .308 last year, got me the cheap model without the scope but i threw on a Tasco 3x9 and used it last year for deer season in NY and PA. Had a hell of a time finding the right ammo for the gun as it can be very finiky to what it likes to shoot. I found 150 grain Remington rounds worked the best. I tried the 180 gr. Winchester and had no luck. Went through 2 boxes of shells and it just never wanted to stay true. Once i dropped down to the 150 gr. I was dead nuts on 4 out of 5 shots at 125 yards. I blew the front leg off a deer running a death sprint across a corn field during a drive i was sitting on last year. she was about 200 yards out. too bad the guy that found her shot her in the a** with a 300 weatherby mag and wasted all the meat.. needless to say i wont be hunting with them guys again.lol def a great gun tho.
  20. took my 5 year old daughter out the other night behind our house for a about an hour. went and sat under some apple trees hoping t see something and that we did.. Had a nice doe walk up to about 20feet away til my little girl started talking to me about it. She stomped, and blew at us and walked off. Had 2 more deer within 50 yards of us for about 10 min watching us and then they took off. Then she saw a squirrel running across the ground so I shot at it when it stopped up a tree. Silly me forgot the good ol' .22LR had been in the cabinet all summer and last season the scope got bumped hard last use. Needless to say i missed him. But it was a great little outing with my little girl and she had a blast, all in all thats what mattered most.
  21. I still say we all get Uncle Ted Nugent to run for office. I personally feel he could do a hell of a lot better job at any and all things placed before him than what our current "leaders" have in both NY state and our Federal GOV. They are all a joke.
  22. If there is I have not seen nor heard of it in the last 4 years I have been hunting in the area. If anyone on here has more info on it please share it here.
  23. Hello, to all my fellow squirrel hunters. I have been tryingto think of a way to get this going so here it is. Squirrel Competition Rules This will be a 5 round competition. Rounds will begin Oct 1, 2013. each round is to start the firswt day of the month and end the last day of that month. Therefore we will have a round for October, November, December, January, and the Finals will be held in February. if you would like to enter please log into facebook and find my page. you can search Bucks and Broads Hunting to find us. Like the page, send me a message with all your info, only info needed will be Name, Hunting region, DOB(year only), what firearm you are going to use. If you are unable to use facebook, please include the info in a message to me on this site and i will relay it to set it up for contest. To have an eligable kill- it must be shown in a picture with a tape measure showing an overall length from tip of nose to tip of tail. each squirrel will be placed flat on its belly to be measured. You must also have the date and time of each kill posted in a comment with the picture so we can judge it. Any picture without date/time and location or hunting area will not count to overall score. Each Squirrel will count as 2 points, the length will be the tie breaker. Remember NY Reg says only 6 squirrel bag limit per day. A Bonus of 1 point will be added for anyone who fills a bag limit in a day. If yo0u post more than 1 squirrel please have it marked in picture somewhere the number of the squirrel. Red squirrel is not protected and will count twords a total but they will only count as 1 point each. After I have a list of all parties interested I will create an Excel spreadsheet and have each hunters name on it to show a rolling total of squirrels, points and so on. I would like to keep this at a 20 team max. If anyone has any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact me. Dont forget to look our page up on facebook we need more like to get the word out about this and make it happen. Thanks again.
