I had my bino's out but he was showing me the good side. I couldn't tell if there was any sort of wound. No limp in his stride. It was very noticeable though - he had a great rack on one side and the other side was puny. 4 tines on each side.
-
I saw a nice 8 pointer today. One side was different than the other - the main beef was beefier and all of the tines were longer. Does anybody know why this would happen?

From his profile.... "Bow: looking to purchase my first one" He'll probably just make a new username. I would post his name and address. A lot of people have said that you get cash first before sending the item and that's a good way to operate. BUT, he could just as easily sell something on here and scam someone out of their cash, by demanding they pay first.

Between the tree right above it's butt and the snow on the ground, I'm having a hard time figuring what's what.

Yah it's my computer and my eyes, ganging up on me. I've seen plenty of deer with broken legs but never one with three. How do they lose a leg like that?
-
I can't make out the picture. Is the deer missing a leg?

Looks like there may just be statewide Antler Restricts.

I have an in-law with land and he only shoots bucks, the bigger the better. He offered to let me come shoot on his property with the understanding that I would ONLY take does. We scouted a few times this summer and I got real excited for the gun season. In conversation, he mentioned to his wife that I would be helping to manage the herd. She got upset and was incredulous that I was planning to shoot a female. Lo and behold, I wasn't invited to the property during deer season. I think her husband is lucky he's allowed to shoot bucks at all, lol. Guess we'll just have to work on educating her this summer... -

Yes. It's an attitude that people have, not just landowners. I think it's sort of the way we protect women and children. I'm sure someone smarter than me can explain it better. -

What's a mandatory deer check? -
What made you think that he hurt his back left leg? Nice deer.

Hunter/Game Warden relationships

Cool thread, I have only seen an ECO once in the field. I was hiking in the Adirondacks and my dog was off-leash. The officer was very nice and friendly, liked dogs, and stopped to chat for a while. He got to talk to us about what we had seen that day and it reminded me of when people talk about cops "walking the beat" back in the "old days." I guess if he didn't like dogs or was having a bad day, I could've gotten a ticket though. Then I'd either be complaining that the game wardens never cut anyone a break or I'd say I broke the law and deserved it. -
It would be racist to say that Chinese products are crap because the Chinese are stupid. It's not racist to point out these Chinese products are cheaply made and sacrifice quality and durability to hit a lower price point. Pointing out where a bow is made is VERY helpful to you. There are a lot of fine used bows for sale on Craigslist that you can check out in person before buying. Good luck selling your stuff.

Since you've been there for 10 years... Do you think there is a coyote problem? Or did the other guy just make that up?
-
Thanks cdmckane. I'm gonna consider myself lucky that didn't happen to me. JRM you got it. The regs are straightforward, I just wasn't looking in the right place. jjb4900, where would you go to be grumpy if people like me didn't ask stupid questions?
-
Vector -- My dog drinks the same water as these deer and probably has many of the worms that they do too. I trust his nose to judge what's good for him. jjb4900 -- No one said anything about eating the guts. I'm talking about the organs of the animal, which are too rich in nutrients and proteins to go to waste. Both liver and kidneys detoxify the body in addition to many other functions. Just because you have an emotional or visceral reaction to eating them doesn't disqualify them as food.
-
Okay, I see it. Thanks. I probably could've gotten myself a nice sized fine for missing that part.
-
Thanks. I've come around to see this point of view. I stopped by a friends the other day while he was skinning a bear. Smelled like a dumpster diver and I understand the difference in their fat now - that oily, slightly viscous consistency.
-
That makes sense. They're the warmest and once you cut the dang thing open, they get exposed to the most air.

Hey, In the past I have just filled out my deer tag and kept it with my license. I got to talking with an out-of-state friend about bear hunting and I mentioned this. He said I'm doing it wrong and the tag has to be attached to the body. He showed me a picture of a metal tag fixed to a moose antler as an example. I don't see how that would work with these crappy paper NY tags. I did a few google searches and typed in "how to tag" on this forum but I didn't get any answer. Can you guys explain the proper way to tag? For deer and bear? Thanks.

Never seen his tail wag so hard as when I give him raw heart or liver.
-
Some people eat the kidneys but I give them to my dog. I slice a small piece off and give it to him raw; he gives a good sniff and won't eat if the meat has spoiled. I fry the them in bacon grease. You have to do the sniff test raw though because once it's got that bacon smell, they'll eat spoiled meat.
-
Thanks for the advice I'm gonna leave them

Hey My friend shot a nice deer this morning and left the organs (heart, liver, kidney) in the woods with the intestines. I like to eat them and he said he would bring me back to the spot this afternoon so we could grab them. I figure there will be too much bacteria on them to be safe. Is there any way they could be saved? Like if I cook 'em and feed 'em to my dog or something? Thanks guys.
-
Yes, I've heard it's not the type of fat I'm used to. I messed up and put this in bowhunting section instead of the bear section of the forum.
-
Okay that makes sense. Berries vs acorns vs corn vs trash would all turn out different. Has anyone ever used the fat for cooking or making sausage?
