Addendum: Prospective partner can be of any skill level. Everyone has knowledge I could use!

So... Do any of you guys participate in any kind of local club tournaments? I've been fishing for a few years now with a boat, and I love it like crazy. I'm very much new at boat fishing, but I want to learn. So here is my question: I'd like to get into serious bass fishing, I have a decent bass boat and decent gear. I need a mentor! I'd like to get into some tournaments next year, but I know my style/ability is just not up to par. There is a TON if information and educational material online, but that's the problem. There is a TON! My 2nd issue is that I have a serious breathing issue. I have an extremely difficult time loading/unloading the boat solo. I would fish a lot more often if I had a partner. I can provide a boat and an open an eager mind. Currently I usually fish docks, weedlines and drop-offs. Comfortable with basic fishing techniques, but just don't know how to get the best out of my boat. I know I could be doing a ton better. I live in Newark and my favorite fishing area is Sodus Bay. Open to travel a bit. Any takers?

Welcome to the site. There are some very knowledgeable people on here! (I'm not one of them!)

Your first sentence said "horrible pic." You keep saying that word... I do not think it means what you think it means.

Congratulations! My oldest graduated high school last month, and it seems like he was born just a short while ago. Hold on to every moment as they go by FAST!

The Chevy vs Ford of gun discussions
Fehyd643 replied to Borngeechee's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I'd go with a 12ga single shot. 12ga: Plenty of ammo choices(Large/small game, AP), easy to reload shells Single Shot: minimal moving parts for longevity of use and easy repairs. -
(long story ahead by a bad storyteller. Cliffnotes: caught a fish, see pic) So I get to the park around 8pm Thursday evening. Friends are already there with things set up. We had a camper site and a tent site on the water's edge. Since it's late, we throw on some burgers and dogs, break out the Twisted Tea, and build a roaring fire at the tent site. First night, gotta put a line in the water! Problem is, no bait. No cut bait, no worms. I think about using a hot dog chunk for a second, then decide a different tactic. I grab a bit of venison jerky and toss out the hook. The pole is in a spiral rod holder, buried to the hilt, tucked behind a huge rock. I attach a glow stick to the tip of the rod and head back 10 yds to the campfire to begin the campfire libations. Over an hour goes by and not a twitch on the rod. To be honest, at this point I'm not really paying attention. I'm not really fishing, I just cant be next to the water without a pole out. Suddenly, the glowstick goes flying! I stumble to the shore, and no rod! I search the water with my headlamp and see my rod about 3 feet out, slowly moving away! I jump in, grab the sucker and set the hook. The pole about rips from my hand as the critter on the other end lets me know he did NOT particularly care for that action. I'm only running 10lb test, so no muscling this thing in. Time for a fight! I adjust my drag and go 10 minutes of back and forth. I almost get spooled twice, but I finally bring it in! This Channel Cat came in at 12lbs, 31". Measured, weighed and photographed the next morning. All I had was an old spring-style scale, so the weight may be off a bit. Bad news: left it on the stringer for the day to filet up for the night. Sometime during the day, someone came along and cut him off. No idea why. very very pissed, but what can you do. 8' heavy duty stringer, cut clean about halfway. I still consider it a success though. Only cat for the weekend, but hey, it was a nice one!

I have tried a bunch and definitely recommend Scoutlook. I use it for hunting, fishing and for heading to the shooting range. The thing that really makes a difference to me is the wind meters. The app has this thing called "Scent Cone" that is just awesome. It will tell you (fairly accurately) the wind direction and speed at the current or future time. The wind meter really helps me plan my stand location or fishing spot.

I appreciate all the info. As far as night fishing... I was just planning on tossing out some worms while we hang by the campfire. I know there is a chance at some bullhead, but dare I hope for any channel cats?

I'm headed up to Wellesley Island state park this weekend with the boys and the bass boat. I've never been there, but am trying to plan ahead a bit. So looking at Google Earth, I'm thinking of heading out of the marina, heading around the NW part of the island and into Eel Bay. Gotta avoid the border! Eel bay looks protected enough for a bass boat with plenty of ledges/structures to hold fish. This is all speculation based entirely on a map. Any hands on experience would be great. I'm not really targeting anything specific. I just want to get the kids some decent fish. Perch, bass (large/small) whatever. We also have a site on the water, so dropping a few lines from the shore at night for bullhead is also in the cards. Thoughts and tips? Thanks in advance! Joshua

Rifles in 2015 for Genesee County?
Fehyd643 replied to NYBuckHunter27's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Also looking for news. Anyone? Bueller? -
On an interesting note, I spent half of my youth only a few miles from that vineyard. (corner of 245 and flint hill rd). Then I spent the rest of my youth living across from some of the Widmer's family. One of them was even my elementary school art teacher! I spent countless hours on their land building forts and climbing trees. small world! Joshua

Asking $2,500 OBO Not looking for trades Selling my bass boat. This boat has caught me a ton of fish, but I was finally able to upgrade to a newer model. Spent most of my time in Sodus Bay, the canal and Conesus (love the pike!). I know it's not the most pretty thing on the water, but it runs great and will get you to the fish. This is a GREAT starter boat, and if it weren't for the upgrade I would never get rid of it. Overall Length: 16' Engine: 1983 Johnson Sea Horse 90 V4, power tilt/trim Trolling Motor: MotorGuide F25 Power Plus, 25lb Thrust, Pedal controlled Fish Finder: Lowrance Mark 5X 2 full livewells, aerated twin batteries with onboard charger Engine was tuned last year, with new plugs. I have all the papers for boat and trailer and it is pretty much ready to fish. It is still winterized, but hopefully warm weather comes soon. I'm available to answer any questions you may have (I'm not a mechanic, so really technical engine questions are over my head) Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. My wife wont let me bring the new boat home until I get this one out of the yard so it's got to go! Pics are posted up on craigslist: http://rochester.craigslist.org/boa/4968145627.html PM me here, or email - j.ocampo1974 at gmail

Phade; Thank you! This is exactly the stuff I'm looking for. I'll definitely check out Bear Creek over the next month. I'm serious about the bass fishing trips. I just bought a new boat over the winter and am dying to get out. Hoping to hit Conesus for Pike come May, and then am am mostly in Sodus Bay. I will usually be out every single sunday when the weather is decent and something is in season. Any time your interested, shoot me a message! I'm still a very novice fisherman, so everyone that comes on the boat will have tips/tricks and techniques I can learn. Joshua

Mizro; I haven't actually tried Phelps yet. I need to drive around and find some public access points. The DEC public fishing rights maps are very very limited, and don't have the outlet. They have zero maps of Wayne County as well, which is the reason for this post. There is a map of Irondequoit Creek though, so I can scout that one without trespassing. Thank you for that suggestion! I have a 500C (20ga) and I am really interested in this topic as well. I had no idea you could use a choke with slugs. Mine only came with one, and I took it out before shooting it. I didnt notice any lack of accuracy with it and have taken 6 deer over the last couple years. I did miss twice at about 35 and 45 yds, but attributed that to my lack rather than the gun. Now I'm wondering about that! Definitely going to take it back out to the range and see what happens. Hopefully I didnt destroy the threads!

Looking for more spots around my neck of the woods for trout. I have a friend that knows the southern areas (East and West Coy Creek) but I can rarely make that kind of trip. At most, I only have a few hours to fish at a time and I dont want to spend most of that driving. I'm primarily a bass fisherman (Sodus Bay with my bass boat) but am really trying to bust my Trout Cherry! I know most people won't give up their spots, so I propose a trade. You help me out with creek fishing, and I will take you out for Bass in June! ...or May for pike, or whatever I can help with whenever. lol PM me please, or post up in here if you like. I live in newark, and would like to find some spots somewhat close by primarily for trout. Thanks! Joshua

Went to East and West coy creek yesterday. Fast high and muddy. Also scoped out around Clifton Springs. Super fast high and muddy! Did't get a chance to check out maxwell, but am going to check it out sometime this week. Would love to hear any updates in Wayne County if anyone has them!
