  1. Got this guy on my cam, this will be my second year out and I'm hopeful he will be my first white tail.
  2. I can't put my finger on why, but I think foxes are really cool animals
  3. just picked one up.... will weigh in at a later date i have never used a trail cam before, how do you get the pics from the cam to your computer?
  4. what trail cam and how are the night pics?
  5. I've only bow hunted deer thus far in my short hunting career and this year I would like to also go at em with rifle. I don't know why but I have a real interest in the Marlin 1895 and the 45-70 round in general. Just looking for the opinion of those much more experienced than I am on both that rifle and round.
  6. I believe it would be legal in NYS to hunt with, but ethically would y'all consider it too small of a round to do sufficient damage to a whitetail deer in order to get a quick clean kill?
  7. wish I had an extra $500 lying around, I've only been bow hunting and mean to get a rifle to start rifle hunting
  8. He didn't come back during my afternoon sit nor did I see any other deer. So my first hunting season was a lot of fun as well as very frustrating at times but I certainly learned a ton and have some experience under my belt now. At nearly 30, I'm glad I picked up this sport and will most certainly be involved until I am too old to go out. If I ever have kids I look forward to teaching them all that I learn along the way as I did not have a mentor and can see how much fun going out with your dad or uncle would be. Even though I came up empty handed this year I am definitely not discouraged, I'm actually more determined than ever to get out and get one next season.
  9. Been out around 15 times this year long island bow hunting. I shot a buck my second time out but was unable to find it after an extensive 2 day search. A few outings after that I had another buck wander head on into my shooting lane only to catch my sent before he offered me a broadside or quartering away shot. , Now this morning I had a buck walk right in front of my blind and offer a perfect quartering away shot at 15 yards and I aimed too high and he jumped the string so my arrow flew right over him. I'm pissed I screwed that up and more it's looking like my first season out I'll have been skunked. I guess the one positive thing I can look at its that at least I missed clean rather than a hit outside the vitals. I'm hoping that this evening offers me one last shot so I can at least fill one tag. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  10. I am going from fairly far west to far east. Now the spot that I hunt is usually a little bit inside the tree line alojng a trail deer use close to an open marsh. Because that is so open do you think they will avoid that trail?
  11. plus, this is my first year out hunting, and my freezer is empty. up until this point, I have taken a shot and hit a buck (was unable to recover it though, this is still a very sore subject for me) and last weekend I had a nice 8pt walk within 20 yards of me but he was facing me the whole time. Then after he stood still for about 2 minutes, he put his nose up in the air, took some deep breaths, definately smelled me, stood for anouther 30 seconds and turned around very fast and walked back where he came from. Learning from last last time, I just watched and did not force a shot I didn't have. I would just really like to get my first deer, whether it be a buck or a doe. Then I can have some meat to eat and possibly a picture to put up under my name on this forum.
  12. This will be on long island, so it would be bow hunting... and I have only hunted out of a ground blind... it is a pop-up tent blind, i think it will blow around too much in 25mph winds so I may have to not use it or get some diesel stakes.
  13. Supposed to be pretty windy this sunday (25mph) which is the only day I can get out each week. The last time I went out and It said the wind was 21 mph my ground blind was blowing all over the place and I didn't see one deer. So i guess my question is, is 25mph too windy to even bother making an hour and a half drive? I'm thinking it is, but I really hate to lose a day due to the weather.
  14. And I appreciate all of the feed back guys, I am definately not soured on bow hunting, I actually love it, but I really am pissed and upset about wounding and possibly killing a deer and having nothing to show for it, what a waste and a needless death.
  15. I did not see any blood where I last saw him so then I went to the spot where I hit him and the first spot he stopped. Still did not see any blood. After this I combed the entire property and still found nothing.
  16. Just to add, the property I was on is bordered on two sides by water and the deer ran back onto the property behind me. 1 What was the color and consistency of the blood on the arrow? I got to the arrow about 2 hours after I shot it so the blood was dry, but is was dark and kind of thickish blood, there were also small chunks of meat on the broad head and arrow shaft 2 Was there any green foul smelling material on the arrow? no 3 was there any hair exactly at the spot the deer was standing? Not that I recall but I also did not specifically look for that 4 If so what color was it? n/a 5 Exactly where did the deer go? ... Where was it the last time you saw it? This can help find the first blood. The deer ran 30 yeards north of me after I first hit it and was staring at the area I was in for a minute or two making a loud breathing grunt/snort. during that time I continued to call him because I was unsure at that point if I hit him or not. Then, he circled around and went slightly uphill 40 yeards behind me to the south and continued to look at me and breath/grunt snort. I started the search the next day at the last spot i saw him.... if he went to the south or the east of me he would eventually hit a bay. if he went west, he would hit peoples houses, and unless he went back around north west of me he could not have gotten back onto the land that I can't hunt on. I was specifically listening for this during the two hours I stood and waited to search in the quiet dark woods.
  17. sorry geno, I accidentally posted it before the whole thing typed.
