  1. I was down in Partridge Run WMA, southern Albany County. I deer hunted in Pine Bush this past weekend and all I saw was squirrels so it may be worth it. Speaking of which, can you hunt turkey in Pine Bush?
  2. So does the "Acorn Rage Bomb" fall under the baiting prohibition. For those of you not familiar with it, it is an aerosol can of liquid that smells like the Acorn Rage powder. When you press the button it sprays 60 straight seconds of it into the air. The deer can't eat it but it smells like food to them. I can;t figure out its legality.
  3. It's strange in the past filling a limit in 6 hours would not be a problem. We were hunting big stands of oak and shag-bark hickory for the squirrels but to get there we went through fields of grass that was once waist high but was now dead and blown over so you would think you'd flush a couple rabbits or pheasants.
  4. Finally got a day to head out and chase some squirrels yesterday. Between two of us we got one and saw three others. This was a spot that always produced a limit last year and we didn't even see a limit this year. In six hours of hunting we didn't even flush one rabbit or pheasant either. Anyone else noticing decreased small game numbers this year?
  5. What ever happened to "live and let live"? Everyone wants to dictate everyone else's behavior these days. I may be a newb but all I see here on any of these AR or QDM posts is people trying to push their opinion down other people's throats. It's coming from both sides, no one party is guilty. Can't we just agree to disagree?
  6. I finally went to Capital District WMA yesterday to teach the girlfriend how to shoot. It was tough terrain, steep in many places, rocky and uneven, and overgrown thick brush as far as the eye can see. Make sure you're wearing high boots with good ankle support though since more than a few times what I thought was solid ground turned out to be a leaf covered crevice between two rocks. Not to mention I got turned around and lost in the woods...never happened to me before but it sure is nerve wracking to turn around to head back and not remember which way is back lol. I guess it serves me right for going into an unfamiliar area with no map or compass.
  7. I got 2 for 4j. And Burmjohn the deadline for DMP's is october 1st and leftovers are first come first served starting November 1st
  8. I was looking into the Crimson Talons. I've heard the blood trails are amazing but how do they fly? A buddy of mine at work said he was having serious planing issues past 30 yards.
  9. Pine Bush, I live right up the road from there so I'm going to man up and brave the ticks because my buddy was scouting there and got pictures of what looked like a 150 class and I've heard reports of a 170 running around too
  10. I haven't managed to get a bow kill yet however I got two DMP's in 4J (bow only) so I have the opportunity to take 4 deer (3 of them does) during bow and god willing the first three does that walk by are getting an arrow in the boilermaker. I'll hold out with that archery either sex tag though since there's been sightings of a 170 class buck in the area I'll be hunting.
  11. I just got a new string and cables a few weeks ago. My question is how long does it take for the string to be broken in?
  12. I think people do hunt for the meat in a way, though maybe not the way that you're thinking. I think it goes beyond steak and burgers to the feeling behind being able to procure your own food. It's not just about your family eating but that primitive feeling you can beat your chest and call yourself a true provider. Just my 2 cents.
  13. Yeah I didn't see anything either but I've heard that it's illegal in other states so I wanted to make sure. That's the last thing I need is a game violation.
  14. I'm just curious, is it legal to hunt in NY with FMJ ammo? I know it's not the ideal choice but in a pinch would it be legal?
  15. It's definitely something to think about. Also consider the population concentrations. The North Country is a lot more sparsely populated than the southern zone so a lot of times it's just too tough to get out there. Also the terrain isn't as welcoming as some of the flatter parts of the state. All of this could contribute to lower numbers of hunters.
  16. I've never been there but I was talking to another guy on here and he was saying it's really tough terrain. I'm thinking it might be worth checking it out though, what do ya got to lose? If you do wind up going let me know what you think. I didn't look at it that way. You make a good point. Bah, I'm young, rough terrain don't bother me none. Hopefully, rough terrain means less people!

  18. My bow used to make a noise that reminded me of my old man's snoring after a long night out drinking with the guys. I put limb saver limb silencers on it, string silencers, and and a limbsaver X-coil stabilizer and now it's absolutely whisper quiet. All I can hear is the arrow hitting the target, no bow noise.
  19. Thank you I was trying to find it on the website but couldn't.
  20. There's a lot of talk about the amount of force needed to deploy the blades, it's right around 23 pounds. My coworker and I opened a pack at work and used a scale to measure it. Whether or not that's too stiff to deploy in an animal I'll let you decide. One big advantage of the design though is that even if it fails to deploy you still have a fixed blade capable of over a 1 inch cut(in the two blade version). As far as legality of the two blade, in the closed position it definitely looks barbed. If you want to see its effectiveness though there's a great video on youtube of a guy in Africa shooting an Eland with one and the blood is literally pouring out of it. One last point of consideration I've heard reports of them being extremely loud in flight.
  21. I just think it's laughable that humans are so arrogant they think they can manage wildlife. Sure, to a certain extent we can alter the environment and the ecosystem but mother nature (what a bitch she is) has had a monopoly on the deer management concept for millions of years. We're not experts marching around managing herds and sustaining the resource. In the big scheme of things we're more like little kids with a chemistry set tinkering in our rooms hoping we don't burn the house down. Unfortunately if we **** around with nature too much that 's eventually what will happen.
  22. Ted Nugent and the specifics aside I don't think you can blame him for working out a plea. If any one of us was in legal trouble I'd bet my left nut we'd lawyer up and get the best deal we could. That's just common sense. I wouldn't know, I don't commit serious enough crimes to need a lawyer. Thats just common sense. Easy doewhacker I wasn't insulting anyone. I'm just saying if any of us happened to be in his situation we'd do what was best or us in the long run. So I don't think we can hold that against him.

  24. I don't know how many of you read Outdoor Life but this month there was an article that I think was right up this forum's alley. It was entitled "The Trophy Trap" and talked about how the quest for monster bucks may be hurting the sport of hunting overall. The article was way too long to post here so I recommend everyone who's interested head to a newsstand and read it. It covered the concept of QDM from several points of view. The first was that of a Missouri native hunter who no longer has any place to hunt with his son because all the farmland he used to hunt as a kid is now leased out to ultra-exclusive outfitters. Then it goes to a hunt club down south that started out as the epitome of what hunt clubs should be, until AR's were imposed that is. Their self-imposed AR policy took all the fun out of the hunting experience and eventually the entire camp fell apart. Lastly it goes to the story of another hunt club in what I think is New York who got some advice from a QDM biologist to kill all the does they could because it worked down south. Next thing you know they have an extremely harsh winter and almost completely destroy their herd. I didn;t so it justice with this quick synopsis but in my opinion it's an interesting article for anyone who got involved in that other 19 page discussion on AR's and QDM. Did anyone else read it yet and if so what do you think?
  25. My biggest problems with rangefinders are 1) It's excess movement bringing it up to your eye and 2) I find myself so distracted with trying to see the yardage in the bottom corner that I forget to pay attention to the deer. He could be looking right at me at full attention and I wouldn't notice. We all know how dangerous that is. My best advice (and the advice of others I know) is if you're going to get one use it to range landmarks in your shooting lanes and then use that to estimate your range. If you want one though the Scout Arc 1000 by Bushnell is a very good one. It runs about 200 bucks but has a $50 mail in rebate at the moment.
