I couldn't find any available information through the public VT fish & wildlife website. So I sent them an email asking about 2015 moose season. When I get the response I will pass it along. -

I have not heard of any changes canceling moose season this year. I will look into it for you and let you know what I find. VT fish & game just may not have released the application form online yet, but don't hold me to that just yet. As soon as I can get some info, I will pass it along. -

Very nice workmanship. I Love the etching. -
I have pretty good success with cottontail and some hare 20 minutes north of Granville NY in the Benson VT area. Not much in the way of state land due to the lack of forest clearing to create new habitat. I run my guided trips with beagles on private land exclusively as that's where the brush thickets and young softwoods are from forest clearing work. I would say try to find some 7-12 year old chopping in the Cambridge area after a fresh snow and see whats in the area. Good luck!

I really cant tell in the original post if that is a eastern yote or a wolf. Is it possible that the trapper hadn't put down the animal and it is still alive in the photo? This might explain the distance between the trapper and the animal for the photo. I certainly would not get close to a animal in a trap and break my concentration to pose for photo I tell ya. There has been only once that I could say I may have seen a wolf in the wild. Northern Adirondacks, Canadian border still hunting through an over grown recent clear cut edge. Snow on the ground. I heard a branch snap and a flash of movement going left to right about 35 yards in front of me. I raised my rifle into position to be prepared to see a doe 100lb or so and she was getting the hell out of dodge. 10 seconds or so after on the same trail another movement following the doe fast. It was the same size height and weight by my guess, only when it got to the opening where I identified the earlier doe it was a canine. Darker than the original post photo for sure. But it happened so fast, I was baffled by what I just saw. After a few minutes I went to check tracks. Definitely canine and as big as my fist in the snow. I followed them for a bit. The canine faded off the right of the doe track then I found the canine track come back to the doe's trail from the left. I figured out eventually that I was not going to see it again, but I found two sets of canine tracks at the same time crossing the doe's trail back and forth switching sides like herd dogs. Very exciting event.

How to get rid of ticks.........2 blocks of wood and a lot of time........Just goofin around. I was told by a very knowledgeable woman that was involved in wild animal rehabilitation that the tick population is directly related to the field mouse population. The more field mice in an area, the more ticks you will find. There was a big group or coyote hunters in my area that killed 300+ yotes in one year. It may have been coincidence but the ticks went boom in numbers the following season. The coyote hunters have stopped hunting in my area and have moved on. This season through the spring, summer, and thus far I have counted about a dozen ticks on both my clothes and my clients clothing. That includes all the food plot work and tree stand set up. There may be no hard evidence that the ticks relate to the field mouse, but in years when I get many coyotes cam pics and sightings, the ticks aren't as abundant. But years when coyotes, bob cat, red tail hawks, and owl sightings are very low we dig out and flick off way more ticks. Example, I was bitten and had to remove 20+/- ticks in one year about 6 years ago. This year, knock on wood, none that had bitten just crawling on me. Be aware and always check. If there is any question, get the antibiotics. Lyme disease is very real and very nasty.

Deep woods off works well in the preseason set up. I just spray my boots and pants and it seems to be effective. During deer season my layers are tucked in so they cant get to my skin except my head and neck which my wife checks for me when I get home. As far as ticks getting on your clothes, I hang my clothes outside under cover most of the times I get back from a hunt. Ticks are attracted to body heat, so once the clothes get cold they fall off to go look for warmth. I hate ticks. Useless insect that contributes nothing beneficial to anything or anyone. I kill all the ticks I find, no mercy.

I shoot HHA single pin with dial. I like the fact that during set up at any point in the bows life, all I have to do is range find 20 yards adjust wheel to hit the mark then make a mark on the blank tape on the dial. Then range find 40 yards and do the same. Compare the results to the page of pre marked tapes that comes with the sight and place the correct sticker on the dial. Now I am sighted in 0-60 yards. When I hunt any of my stands I already know the places to expect deer to come from, plus I always range easily identifiable trees at odd distances so if a deer presents the shot I can take it.

Rutland County Vermont Rubs and scrape lines active. Small bucks getting pushed out of the action and acting lost. Saw big 8pt hound doggin' a mature doe this am first light.
-
Nice buck working scrape and rub line at last light tonight. Youth hunter, 9 years old. Couldn't get the buck in the scope, very exciting though. Got to watch him make a very aggressive rub 45 yards away.

Just started seeing scrape line and rub lines opening up last weekend in southwestern Vermont. No chasing yet, no freshening of scrapes, no grunting, small buck sightings, big boys remain hidden.

No, it wasn't an apple tree. This was on the edge of a hardwood/softwood tree line. I believe it was a beech nut tree. Will the wooly aphids kill those trees?

I was moving a tree stand to a better position. While trimming a few limbs in a shooting lane I found these things on a branch. They are white like snow and they were moving and twitching. Very strange, I have never seen this before. Anyone know what they are? Did I find an alien race?

Thanks for asking Biz-R-OWorld, the season started slow with minimal movement during day light hours. Then it cooled off a few days and the action picked up. After I put clients in the woods, I spend my time scouting with good optics from the roads around the properties and checking trail cams from other properties that don't have clients hunting on them currently. I keep track of all critter traffic from stand and my scouting from a distance. Here are the stats for this season so far with three clients for last week and two new clients that arrived today not including trail camera pics: From the truck--Deer count---80 --Buck count---10 --turkey count--110 --Coyote count- 1 From the stand--Deer count--22 -- Buck count--3 --Turkey count--49 --Coyote count-9 Shot opportunity--Doe---12--Three clear misses--One killed so far and One to track tomorrow morning, and one hit good that crossed onto an bordering property and wouldn't let us recover it (RRRRR). --Buck--3----In range, but not optimal shot, passed --Turkey--17---In range, no shot or busted moving in tree --Coyote--6-----Three shots and all clean misses -
Beautiful picture, of a beautiful young lady, a beauty of a Doe, on your beautiful day. Congratulations to you both!

Awesome buck, a true trophy!

I kept forgetting to post the pic of some ginseng I found this fall while setting tree stands. The bigger one is old enough to dig up, but I usually let them get a bit bigger so they have a good four leaf top. I planted the seeds so the birds and squirrels wouldn't get them to make the patch get a bit bigger down the road.

Box Blind Build That Got Out Of Hand, In A Good Way!
VT Outfitter replied to VT Outfitter's topic in Hunting Related Pictures
I made stacking bunk beds in one corner the long way. 16 inches off the floor for the bottom, 48 inches off the floor for the top bunk. I made them 6' 6" long and 36" wide giving me 7 feet left to place the wood stove so it would be far enough away not to cook you when your sleeping but keep wood smoldering all night. I also brought up a coleman cook stove and lantern and a few buckets for washing with warm water off the stove. -

Box Blind Build That Got Out Of Hand, In A Good Way!

I know, I know. It seems kind of ridiculous for a box blind. When I originally started with building plans it was going to be the same as most of the others that I have done which is 4' by 4' single up to 6' by 6' for a two man for bringing a hunting partner or filming a hunt. When this build started I was planning on 6x6. But given the location being so far off the road just over a mile walk, up hill the whole way. The plan grew to be 8x8 with a cot to rest instead of walking back out for clients that don't want to sit in the tree all day. I have tree stands set on the same hill, so they can hunt the morning, then have a rest and maybe some lunch, then head back to stand in the afternoon. Then I thought instead of one cot maybe I can have two, so bunk beds seemed right....boom 10x10. I had a wood small wood stove in storage so I brought that up. I have a few finishing touches like stove pipe and mattresses, but the bulk of the project is done. Getting materials in there was quite a chore. My 4x4 wheeler with materials on a trailer chained to a mid size tractor to get there. Many times we had to unload the trailer and carry lumber up to the next mountain shelf. Blood, sweat, and dreams went into this project. There is also deer trails that are well used within bow range from the "box blind". Quite often when bringing in hunters, we jump deer on the way to stand. We see deer from stand and shot opportunities regularly. I am curious to find out if sightings will increase with less human foot traffic. It seems logical to me. -

It is 10 feet wide and 10 feet long and 6' 3" head clearance to the collar ties. The porch makes it 12 feet long. -

I am considering it.....at least for the season. I still have to figure out a bathroom arrangement that would be indoor friendly and easy to handle.
