That just because you want it caliber
Jaeger replied to Borngeechee's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
check out the september 24, 2014 thread on "are there any 338 Fed shooters out there?" Also a recent thread on 338 brush gun scopes. I shoot and hunt with it with 200 grain bullets. It seems to be a finiky round, but if you get it dialed in, it's powerful, relatively flat for NY hunting and relatively easy on the shoulder. Jaeger -
Does anyone have any experience with Woodleigh bullets? I have been loading them for about two years and had only one experience with them on game. A small doe with a 200gr PP out of a .338 Federal running at about 2650mv. Complete pass through, good wound channel and short jump/run. Bullet was not recovered. In target and load development, I pick them out of the dirt bank and, even after hitting rocks, most expanded well over 50%. Soft and expand easily. The really cool thing is that they really held together! I've been getting about 187.5grains average recovered weights! They are also very accurate for a hunting bullet. As posted elsewhere, that load runs right about 0.347 c-t-c for 3 shots at 100yds off the bench. (I measured wrong when I reported 0.477 in a previous post, the outer edge to edge is .785 and I subtracted .308 not .338). Any way, I know they are a little expensive, but not the most expensive bullets. I guess I just like they are from Australia. p.s., their new loading manual, from Midway, is great.

Got a .475 Turnbull custom 1886 on order, does that count? It's a 50-110 case shortened and necked down to .475. Puts out 400 grain barnes at about 2100fps. For our local buffalo, lions and such. -
Great point Larry, Guess I just thought 338 Federal or marlin when he said 20" brush gun. If its a 338 win or other mag. then that's a whole other ball game. If it's a 20" magnum I hope it has a muzzle break and great ear muffs!!

My 16 ga is a Winchester 24 with modified/improved chokes. The 24' are inexpensive field guns but a little bulky. I hope to get an original A-5 in 16 someday.

Has anyone bought the new ruger in 17wsm? I had a savage in 17wsm and was not happy with the accuracy and especially the quality of the bolt action. I understand the new savages have a better bull barrel for accuracy but they still have the same action. I have the 77/22 LR and wonder if anyone has tried the ruger 17 wsm? What do you think of it, it is a little pricer but not as expensive as the Winchester 1885 single shot in 17wsm.

I use a vx-6 1-6x on my 20" .338 federal and its great. I never need the 6x in the woods and usually leave it at 1x if I'm in the thick stuff and 2x or 3x if I'm sitting on stand, never needed more than 4 in the woods. My bolt rifle has the 1-4 on it and I can sight in and shoot tight groups out past 200yds (my ranges max.) with it set on 4x. The only difference I see between tmy newer 1-6 and the old 1-4 is the new 1-6 is a 30mm and the 1-4x24 is a 1" scope. The newer 1-6 is brighter at all powers but as I've posted elsewhere, it's bulkier than the 1-4. 1-4 is all you'll ever need for big game out to ~250 yds. Past that the 338 fed starts to drop a bit too much for my confidence on game.

Site Suggestions & Comments
Jaeger replied to HuntingNY's topic in Hunting New York Annoucements and News
Is anyone interested in a "Gun Dog" forum? I cannot find anything on this site. It could cover all aspects from puppies through full training, food and health issues, bird dogs, water dogs, tracking dogs, training tips and equipment reviews/opinions, etc. I would really like to be able to communicate with local NY dog owners and trainers as NY has such a diverse environment and use of hunting dogs. -
I had a John Deere Trail Gator on my farm, the one without the roll cage. It was great as it could sneak under branches like an atv. It was speed limited to about 20-25mph but on rough ground that was all I needed. I bought that model because it was the first side by side to have an adjustable drivers side bucket seat and I'm short. It hauled 600-800 lbs of lime, fertilizer and seed all over the place and pulled a plotmaster 400 through anything I lowered into. I loved it, unfortunately I had to leave it behind with the new farm owner. It would go practically anywhere an atv would go, but in more comfort and control. It was only a few inches wider/narrower that the big atv's and I could show the farm to ANY passenger, even my 80 yr old parents. I could dump anything an put any equipment, tree stands and harvested deer easily in the bed. I guess the most important thing in the end was its great capacity and small size/height made it very useful.

Bow Addict and Fletch, Thanks!!!! I looked up the websites and that is exactly the information I was looking for. Just goes to show, this forum/site really works!! Jaeger P.S. I don't intend to shoot over 35-40yds at game, but I do like to practice at all ranges and these scopes make that practical.

Hey NYSLOWHAND, Thank you. Yes I did sight in per manufactures specs and was dead on at 20,30 and 40 yards. The 50 yard cross hair line is way off. The scope I am looking for is a specific brand/model of scope a crossbow shooter at a range had and told me about, I forgot the name. That specific scope had a dial with velocities listed, 250, 300, 325, 35, 375, 400.......etc. around the scope body. The idea was to set the dial to the exact velocity the manufacturer specifies for the bow and particular weight bolts (my bow instructions list 3 different velocities for 3 different weight bolt/head combinations). So, the scope operates by setting the dial to the velocity and it compensates its individual cross hairs to that velocity.

I had an old Leopold vari -x II 1-4 on my Rem 870 slug barrel and loved it. Put it on my .375 h&h mag. a few years ago and it's a perfect match. Can shoot sub 1" groups at 100 yds with it set a 4x and a good target. It has over 200 rounds through it and it is one tough scope. My favorite though, is the Leopold VX-6 1-6 I put on my 338 Fed. Its a true 1 power at the low end and you can shoot with both eyes open and no difference in sight picture. The 6x end is all I will ever need for this gun (a 20" bbl black bear sako). The only issue I have is the 30mm scoped look too "fat" and "bulky" to me, they dont carry bad though.

I guess I got a "lemon". I had a 527 in .204 ruger with the laminated stock and set trigger option. The inletting was so bad, every time I cycled the bolt, the rear of the bolt broke off a chip out of the stock in the tang area. Also, the set trigger would sometimes go off just closing or opening the bolt? I also found the bolt disassembly confusing at times. Sold my copy, it was too cheaply made and dangerous. I know they have a great reputation, but one bad experience can make me cautious. I love mauser actions and the CZ is pure mauser.

I'm going to upgrade the cheap scope that came with my crossbow and a fella at the range to me about a crossbow scope that has a dial to dial in the bolts velocity. Has anyone heard of what scope this is? I am using a multi cross hair, the first three lines are dead on at 20,30 and 40 yards but the last two lines are way off. It would be great to get a velocity compensating crossbow scope that is tailored specifically to the actually bolt velocity of that model bow. Rather than one with lines or dots preset.

Pistol Permits Catskills region
Jaeger replied to Jaeger's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
OMG, Thank you, that is exactly what I meant. Thanks for the information. I'll have to take my LI permit to the Delaware county clerk and fill out their paperwork same as you did, get fingerprinted (again!, did it for LI) and a new picture. What you had to do is what I meant by "reapply in the new county of residence". By the way, how long ago was it you changed it to Delaware county? -

Jaeger replied to Jaeger's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
That is incorrect. One needs to reapply to the county that is the new permanent place of residence when moving from one county to another. -
Pistol Permits Catskills region
Jaeger replied to Jaeger's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Each county and NYC have different lengths/ terms for their permits, 3yrs, 5yrs, life/good until revoked Yes, it is a State permit good/valid throughout the entire state (Except NYC). But when you move permanently, change your residence from one county to another you need to reapply to that county you are moving to. They will honor your old permit for its lifespan. In my case, I have a permit good for 5 year increments, it gets renewed each 5 years. State law allows me to take it throughout the state (except NYC). But state law also requires that the permit you have be issued by your permanent place of residence/county. Please excuse, but I am an attorney so I am up on the pistol permit laws. My question was simply to those who obtained pistol permits recently in Delaware, Otsego or Chennago county and the local judges (who issue the permits) biases/policies. I understand each of you know the rules in your own county. The permits are good throughout the state (except NYC). But one Must have their pistol permit issued by the county that is, or will be, their permanent place of residence. -

Jaeger replied to Jaeger's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Thanks, I understand that and the process. My question was more directed to how hard/difficult it is to get a permit in Delaware, Otsego and Chennago Counties. Judges issue the permits in those counties and policies vary. My LI permit was issued by the sherrif's dept. (eastern LI) so I did not have to deal with an individual Judge with his or her policies/preferences. I understand the Judge in Schoarie county is very strict. -
Contemplating a hand cannon for deer hunting
Jaeger replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I have a Ruger Super redhawk with a Leuopold 2x scope on it. The full power 454 loads are a handful, but too much for deer. Winchester makes a lighter 250 gr deer load, very comfortable to shoot. Also, my gun is marked 454/45 colt. and any 45 colt from full bore Cor-Bon's to very light cowboy action loads work well. Generally practice with the 45 LC cowboy action loads and go to the 454 win 250 for deer. -
Hi, I am finally moving up to the Catskill region from the island. I've had property up here in Delaware county for the past decade but had to sell due to taxes and mortage. I am looking for a new property and the ability to maintain a pistol permit is a major factor on where I go. I have a LI pistol permit and am getting conflicting reports of Pistol Permits in Delaware, Otsego and Chenago counties. I understand Delaware county is fairly straightforward. Does anyone know how hard it is to get a pistol permit in otsego or especially chenago county? According to the state police, I can transfer my LI permit to the new county but would need to apply for a new county permit before the expiration on my current LI (5yr) permit. Anyone who has information and recently transferring their permits or with RECENT experience getting a permit in Del., Otsego or chenago county would help greatly. (How you did it decades ago may be interesting but wouldn't help me now). Thanks, Jaeger

OK to share? Safe act Question
Jaeger replied to NeverSeenNorHeard's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Quick note. Don't know how good a friend yours is but keep in the back of your mind a person with a Felony on his record can't legally own or even possess (hold) a firearm unless they obtained a relief from disabilities certificate from the Judge. Sounds like a silly concern, but you put yourself at risk if you don't know and let someone use your guns. And a Felony on a record can come from a few non violent convictions, dwi, other driving offenses that you may not know about. Just something I run into occasionally when people ask to see or use my guns. -
I've tried both below listed 30-06 low recoil loads in my Remington 7600 pump with the 22inch barrel. The Remington "Reduced Recoil" load is a 125 grain spitzer type bullet at something like 2600fps. Its supposed to fly as flat as the 150's I think, they say something like you can keep the same zero sightings. The Federal "Low Recoil" load is a 170 grain flat nose bullet bullet at 30-30 velocities. In terms of felt recoil, the Federal Low Recoil load felt more like a light 20 guage shove while the Remington Reduced Recoil load still had a little bit of sharp jab. My gun still has the narrow plastic butt plate. It has a Leupold vari-x 1-4 scope on it. Shot at 4x. Funny, but the gun shot the Federal loads very well, about 1 1/2 - 2" groups @ 100yds., while the Remington load spray them all over the target at about 5-7" groups. In my gun, the Federal loads felt lighter and shot better but basically reduced the gun to a 30-30. Fine for introducing new comers if that's the only gun available for them to shoot. I also bought some Remington 30-30 Reduced Recoil loads with the 125 gr bullet, but haven't gotten to shoot them and sold the gun. Oh yeah, just remembered. My buddy bought the Remington Reduce Recoil loads in .308 win for his daughter and she likes and shoots them very well. We can't find them anymore so he worked up a similar reload.

Hey guys, I didn't expect such a challange either. I said it's a Sako Black Bear (that's the starting point). I wanted that particular gun because it has a reputation for accuracy and has an excellent action. I wanted it in a short action caliber and .338 Fed was the largest short action in that gun. My hunting partner has a black bear. It's a .308 and has a 20" barrel and a barrel band for the sling swivel. Now here is the main point. That 20" barrel and barrel band lets the end of the barrel sit below our heads when slung over the shoulder. In our hunting conditions, this helps prevent snow down our backs/necks when traveling through the woods. Lets face it guys, we each hunt differently and choose our guns accordingly. We still hunt mostly. Knocking snow off branches is annoying. As far as the ballistics, it wasn't much of a concern as long as the caliber carried enough energy for deer and bear within 200yds. This is eastern mountain hunting. As my favorite author Finn Aagaard often stated, "on game and not on paper, there is not much difference between hits from anything between a .270, 308, ... up to about a 300magnum". This is from a professional african hunter with thousands (not hundreds) game shot experiece. I love ballistics too, but I chose the Sako Black Bear in .338 federal because it is short, accurate and just plain cool!! To each his own. Thanks for all the comments. Jaeger

Beautiful piebald! Thanks for the pic!

Thank you all for the welcome! Sits in trees, Schatzie is the name of my dog (in my bio pic here) and she is a Drahthaar, a German Registry German Whirehair. Sort of like an AKC german wirehaird pointer. The lines split decades ago when the dogs brought to the US were specifically focused on pointing birds (AKC german wirehaired pointers), the German dogs (Drahthaars) are still bred to do many things. In Germany, hunters (of anything, birds, deer, boar, etc.) are required by law to have a tracking dog on hand before any hunt to ensure wounded game gets found. The most used are Drat's followed by various the various breeds of daschunds. They are a "Versitile" breed and, in addition to pointing, the retrieve game and track. I have my DEC tracking license and Schatz is in training to track and find wounded or hit deer. She is almost 4 yrs old and coming along on birds and tracking, 'tho she prefers chasing frogs and squirrels. She is my companion and hunting partner and not a field trial dog. We are having trouble with water work (had a bad water experience) and I may start a thread under small game to seek advice on that. Thanks again all for the welcome. Jaeger
