SB 4739 - Establishes the yearling buck protection program
phade replied to Rebel Darling's topic in Deer Hunting
If this was truly based on legit scientific data, the Swiss cheese listing of WMUs wouldn't have taken place. In or out - black and white. This is political jockeying in an area a legislator is using for their own gain. Plain and simple. The biological basis for this is second to the retention of office. Regardless of where anyone stands on this issue - it was half assed from the get go and is simply demonstrative of the problem NY has. People like you who want to rationalize any semblance of this process and being beneficial is exactly the problem. I have a question for you - did you write your legislator and ask that they put forth proposal to remove legislators from the biological management of the resource beyond funding/budgetary allocations and czar/appointment? I did. Anything else you provided to your legislator only supports the legislators being involved in decisions they should not be involved in. Period. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Except he does this and says "I shot a two year old." Did this 2x this season and shot 0 two year olds. WTH!

In some areas - that half-racked 3 pt would be still legal. LOL. -

I'm sure dbhunter will now come back and still say the original proposal wasn't some poorly crafted piece of crap. This amendment is just proof that an idiot wrote it or that the authors half-assed it from the get-go. -
With a well executed plan and an ethical group of hunters, running deer with dogs is probably the most exciting style of gun hunting for deer I can imagine. The sounds of walkers or another sporting dog hot on a deer's trail piercing the fall morning and the camaraderie that comes with that style of hunting is simply something many of us high-brow northerners will simply never get to experience. What an absolute shame.

I fly over several of our hunting properties 1-2x a month. I study aerials enough that I can almost directionally find them without much effort. I think once I was flying in and Moog and my buddy were parked and hunting. Pretty neat to see and a welcome sight after working and having to travel. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Ratios have more to do with breeding success than age structure according to most biologist conversations I've had. If ratios aren't there where they need to be then does can't be bred at the success rate necessary regardless of buck age structure. In our part of NY, the DEC believes 95-98% of does are successfully bred annually and only 10% or so involve a second rut so to speak. Keep in mind this is with our supposed lousy age structure. Only after ratios, does age structure come into play. I think many people underestimate the percentages of one and two year olds involved in breeding here. Improved age structure does allow younger bucks to participate less in the rut activity but let's be clear here, we're talking Kansas level age structure here, not this lousy move some bucks to two year olds. They also have ratios that back the ability up for this to take place. Our DEC really hasn't said much about improving the fact that such a high percentage of does are bred - in fact, they want less I'd imagine since these WMUs are "overpopulated." I have a 12 pt 1.5. The real impact on areas where less than the necessary age class target is protected is decreased antler beam length of the younger bucks on average. This is one component of high grading. Sure some age date impacts have merit but generally speaking a buck at the front of the class at 1 will be likely to be ahead of the class at 2, 3, 4, etc. If there was a case to protect one year olds to truly improve the herd it should be to protect the 5, 6, 7, 8, point 1.5s. CM is doing well. Was on a tree that toppled in the wind and it made it just fine. I was able to get this cam to work on a rebranded app, too. I haven't messed with the controls for the cam. Not sure I can do it via mms or if I have to use a data SIM and reprogram. I hope I can change the delay and sensitivity as that would be about as good as it gets. Either way this cam is plugging along just fine. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Everyone gets a trophy. Simple, clear, and agile hunting rules will always trump slow, cumbersome, reactive legislated regulation. Especially those reducing choice and enjoyment of the sport. I shoot what makes me happy for the most part. I typically pass bucks so Moog can shoot them anyway. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -

No - it's commercially made. Most of the game cameras you see are rebranded by resellers - Primos, Bushnell, Covert, Moultrie, etc. Very few have their proprietary manufacturing plant in China. Many cams are built in the same few buildings in one province of China. This camera is one that was sent to me from China via one of those factories and I was able to make it work here in the US on a US carrier. It doesn't have the overhead and rebranding costs associated with it, reducing the price, obviously. Also doesn't have the QC, but if I sell these, I verify they work ahead of time anyway.

Oddly enough, the price of the marketed and produced cell cams have only went up. My Code Black was $200 and change back in 2012. The Verizon Spartan Gocam has an MAP of $469.99, ATT @ $399.99. Moultrie mobile is $200 plus cost of cam - which for a good one is going to be another $100. Bushnell is upper $200s. Part of the reason is because the innovation is still climbing. Only when the market matures will you see prices fall - and what's the holy grail that hasn't been accomplished yet in mass terms? Video. Got a ways to go. You might find some of these cheaper cell cams, but they will have basic functionality and so far nobody has produced a "second tier" cell cam when already offering a cell cam flagship model.
