  1. On stand. Boy its miserable hunting weather. Seems like a spring day for turkey....or september.
  2. Warm. One shot far away at 7. Thats it...in 8h. Never in my life seen it so slow.
  3. Hot. Out of the woods until this afternoon.
  4. Screwed the pooch this a.m. set on ground on edge of corn field cut last night. Gield was rutted up. One or the rut spots turned out to be a nice doe...never got a shot as the deer walked off. Should have been more observant.
  5. No this isdefi.tely a right hander. The stock has the notch for cheek wielding on the left side (for rh shooting). It is a blued barrel...apparently not many were made in this combo.
  6. My fil won a TC Omega Z5 with blued barrel and the laminate thumbhole a few years ago in a raffle. He is left handed and cannot shoot it. Whats a fair price for it new in box? Thinking about buying it from him.
  7. Not a damn thing moving here . Some shooting though.
  8. Surely going to be out in the morning. Might get out for the evening with the FIL for the last hour of light.
  9. Doesn't really matter how big his antlers are...if his personality is timid...he's not the dominant buck in the area. It's not antler size...it's attitude most times. In fact, some large antlered bucks take little-to-no part in the rut and are shy, unconfrontational - they'll back down from other bucks. Part of that probably allows them to get the body size and antler mass by putting the feed bag on, avoiding the long-drawn out and calorie depleting rut action, and staying to themselves. Now...walking in the woods with that headgear...yeah. He probably felt like he had a bowling ball on his head.

  11. Miserable weather here...cold rain. Wish i was in the stand....looks like a great mroning for movement. This weekend looks horrible....60 degrees.
  12. I've started to lean this way, too. I've got a dedicated Mossberg 20 gauge for deer with the rifled barrel all dudded up in camo including the scope...and I haven't hunted with it 2 out of the three years I've owned it. My 12 gauge smoothbore with those truballs have served me well for the 100 and less shots. If I'm hunting a stand with 75-125 yd shots...i'll bring the Vortek UL. It's so much cheaper to shoot those truballs and the extra time at the range proves useful in the stand.
  13. Shot in Ohio...it was on Archery Talk a while back. The other pics show you just how really big this buck is...insane.
  14. Windy...some shots but not a ton. Maybe 15. Shot a doe yesterday midday. Everything changes now...bow season went by too fast.
  15. Slllllooooow. In the stand all day. 3 in my party and not one sighting.
  16. Slow in 8h. Jumped one in dark. Maybe 50 % of normal shot count by now. Odd.

    Legal is legal

I'm looking to pull the trigger this season on a doe or a nice buck. If I get a sense that one will walk towards my FIL it will get a pass...he hasn't gotten one in quite some time and I'd like to se him shoot anything...bb, doe, 1.5 y/o...anything. He's in his 60's and his quality hunting seasons remaining are getting fewer and fewer. I have a distinct feeling that if he shot a spike...you'd think he shot the hole in the horn buck...
  18. Good deal. I thought so...i just couldn't find any energy/ft lb charts to look at with a single pellet. Thanks! I'm probably going to go with the PB or maybe the XTP since they are a tad lighter.
  19. My FIL is willing to try MZ hunting this year...I offered him the goods to do so to see if he likes it first. I've letting him hunt with my CVA Wolf. In the past I used two 50 gr. pellets with a PB. It performed OK and I had no issues. I wondering if I can drop down to a single 50 gr pellet for him to see if he likes it (hunting with a mz). I've since moved on to BH209 for my Vortek UL. I've got about 30 pellets left of the 777. He'd likely limit himself to 60-75 yds MAX shot when hunting. I've heard of several youths hunting with 50 gr. charges...just wondering what everyone's thoughts are. I'd rather not go out and spend cash for a new box of 777 when I no longer use it and he's not guranteed to like it. I've got several options to match it with 223 grain PB, 240 gr. Hornady XP, 250 gr Hornady SST, and 300 gr. w/Harvester Crush Rib (something similar in design to the XP). Thoughts? Is he kosher for 50-60 yd shots? I'm unaware of any places online to check. I want him to get some practice shots in, before handing him the gun, obviously, hence my hope to have enough pellets for practice/hunting.
  20. Anyone notice the winds are starting to creep up for this weekend? Weather Channel has 17 mph and 21 mph for each day, respectively.
  21. Apparently the season needs to get here for a few of you... I'm just now starting to get excited. Had such a long bowhunting vaca that I've been in a burnout stage since then (thankfully I had to work since the return and didn't have to face a hunt or not hunt situation!). I had been banging around the idea of buying a new slug gun...an H & R Ultra Slug with the tumbhole. Went into Gander 2x this past week to buy it...I stood at the counter for more than a half hour each time before I gave up and walked out. Nobody else has one in the area...obviously it is a busy time for them....but still. I figured I would buy it and tinker during the weeknights and if I felt comfortable with it I would hunt opener with it. Looks like the ol' 500 will be making noise instead. I put about 30 rounds through the 500 on Monday...she's shooting pretty good for a smoothbore. I'll probably end up buying one on gunbroker instead now since there is no real rush.
  22. One with MZ...shot low and back and tracked her for two miles in snow. Eventually ended up meeting land we couldn't hunt and couldn't locate the owner to ask for retrieve permission. I think she survived based on the sign and what I saw of the hit. Lost four with the bow...most of them during the early years of my bowhunting career. Two were low shots that I later sighted during the same season. The other was a disaster and a very rookie mistake at the time. Lost a nice buck two seasons ago after making a good shot that stopped the arrow in the offside shoulder. Gave it time and lost the blood after a good track. Found the arrow and I think the shot was more angled than I originally believed and I probably single lunged it. I wasn't happy about that - I never saw that buck again, which frustrates me to this day.
  23. Downed a matriarch doe and small 6. For NY...I'd say my sightings were slightly lower overall with the exception of good bucks and the # of hunts without a deer sighting. Plenty of deer in the area but mature buck encounters were unusually rare (than the norm)...only one true shooter seen from the stand at 60 yds. Also had 5 sits with no sightings at all...which is unusual. I ended up taking the 6 based on how tough of a season it was for me on my last bowhunt of the season, so I guess you can say I am pleased with that. I'm hoping to get out a bit for gun season but things are already starting to creep into my schedule that are going to take away from it. In the grand scheme of things, this season was the worst I've had in 5-6 years, though. Ohio was tougher...that standing corn made what we have here in NY look like it was the middle of large city.
  24. Why not go with another Redfield? It's lasted you a long time and the modern versions are just as reliable...made in U.S....and OWNED by Leupold. Get the best of both worlds...
  25. I think there are a few states where that's legal...at least some variant of it.
