  1. The webster one? If so, do you remember the stand prices/discount? I love going to that one but it is way out of the way for me (I'm in Livingston Co). Wondering if they have better pricing/selection over the Henrietta/Victor ones.
  2. Ants...you can still find it once in a while. I came by a box a month or two ago but cannot remember where...it stood out because I shot used to shoot the 4x6 in the early 2000s. They don't make it...but it's still around if you look.
  3. I really appreciate seeing pics of that beast. He's a shooter anywhere in the country and a great one at that. If I were you, I wouldn't post any more info..period. Just the county and number of acres can put you in danger of giving too much detail.
  4. As far as that goes, deer are proven to hear about as good and in the same range of frequencies as humans. It's actually really similar. The big difference is their ability to hear a sound a locate it, which is due to their ears (acting like huge satelite dishes that capture the sound...ever notice how one ear can rotate backwards, etc.? IR Video use is notorious for deer noticing...the glowing red blob staying on will really be noticeable to deer. Don't seem to notice it with photos near as much. So, we may hear it and just attribute the noise to general "environmental noise" while the deer hears it and knows it's coming from that black box that also happens to be glowing ever so slightly. And no glow is somewhat of a misnomer. Most of the "black flash" or no glow cams can be detected by most people at very short ranges - it is just extremely dim. Some people can even see the Reconyx black flash...it's pretty odd because some people can REALLY see it while others cannot not see it well or at all. The light wave is apparently on the edge of human capability. Black flash is generally not as bright as red IR and most right now tend to get even more motion blur than red IR because the shutter stays open longer. That is evidenced in the 2012 moultries...their new M80 red ir version has a fast fire/motion blur reduction technology, which is essentially a shorter shutter speed. The black flash version is almost the same, except they cannot offer (or will not) offer it with that tech yet. Thye M80 is notorious for having great night range...but it's also a very powerful illumination..deer really see it. You may be having that issue with your stealth. Maybe look into the Primos mount kit for $20 and set it up higher with a downward angle. Getting it out of their line of sight can really help.
  5. I bet they just went on sale today since their prices change on Sundays. Henrietta had the basics listed at $79...but they were actually 59...so don't think otherwise if you see that. The employees were just slow in updating the prices. With the 25% off, it was a good deal.
  6. Stopped at Dick's. Stands are on sale 25% off current price. $45 for the basic (60 - 15) ladder stands...that's the cheapest I've seen them this season. I picked up two with $10 score card coupon and $10 off $50. So, $35 + tax each for me. Victor and Henrietta were out of the ladder sticks. Victor had one basic hangon left but Henrietta had a ton left. $35-25% for them. Not a bad price but not worth it if you can't pair it with sticks unless you bring one set in and out for multiple hangons. Victor had some Apline drop away rests for $10...only three or so left, but a good deal for anyone who is prices-concious or need one for a kid. I'd have picked one up if I needed one. Also saw a strutter tom decoy (the store brand) for $25 inside the lodge in the top corner to the right as you walk in...hell of a deal for a strutter decoy. Victor had way better sales of items than Henrietta.
  7. I suppose if we don't control the herd, then PETA will. Sounds like a lot of "sky is falling" scenarios being presented. I don't think there are many peopl who have a firm grasp of what dpsm numbers and carrying capacities are for all areas of NY. Some areas, shooting many, many, many deer each year is perfectly sound biologically. In other areas, not so much. Let's not paint with a wide brush here, folks. But, one thing is for sure, if you are not controlling the herd to acceptable DEC levels, then we lose our important role and sway in the process as hunters. I don't eat all my deer meat. I donated one to the coalition this year (that was a goal of mine this season), one to a neighbor who is elderly, rather limited on funds, and consumes the entire deer. In fact, he lets us hunt on his 3.5 acres that contains his home...Talk about a smile as big as the Grand Canyon when I pulled up with a big fat doe to drop off. In years past, I donated two deer to another couple who both had heart issues and were doctor ordered not to red meat with the exception of the leaner varities (deer are one as most know). Two deer a year usually gave them what they needed. Plenty of deer in my area...hardly any public ground and high agriculture. The land can handle a ton of deer, but it also gets overrun at times. I've literally had hunts where I RAN OUT OF ARROWS (3 arrows..three kills) and could have shot more deer. Now, I've also been in some other areas where this is not possible, nor good management. It's just a case of localized management.
  8. And Hornady was just in time with their Zombie Max ammo!
  9. I shot 5 deer this year...4 last year....7 the year before that (all legal). Of them, 10 of them came from the same 10 acre parcel. Apparently my gluttonous self is a problem? Nope. I just live in one of the highest dpsm areas of the state. Not a thing wrong with controlling the herd, and I'm not a full-fledged brown its down member. All the meat goes to good use.
  10. .That's the thing...if you are having issues finding trails...the cams will do that for you. Sometimes the most valuable information is what doesn't show up vs. what does.... So, you buy a new cam, set it for a week, see no deer, then you move it. Eventually, you'll find the trails, and you'll learn a ton more. Just be scent-free, handle the cams appropriately (I'm to the point now I treat my cams as if I were hunting...gloves are worn when handling them and they are kept in a tote).
  11. If you want a good deal...go to Amazon and buy the WGI w6xac...same cam as yours with camo. $49.99! Cams come with the August manufacturing date, which has the new firmware that fixes any of the whiteout issues that were found in the previous firmware version. I bought four of them this week...perfect for high-risk areas at $50 a pop and can handle more important locations as well with a great sensor...picked me up at 60 feet. It's probably one of the best deals I've seen on a usable cam in years. Love my M80...but for the price, the WGI deal is solid. Easy to warranty, too, if an issue does come up. Their customer service is easy to reach and work with. But, from my research, I know multiple users who are running this cam since Sept. with not one whiteout or issue. Batteries lasting 4-6 weeks with 6 being more common and thousands of pics taken on the set.
  12. Sounds more like a single shot gone too far up...he must have really ticked her off.
  13. Did the same thing...first three arrows into my 3d target at 40 yards from my treestand no less. Was wanting to dial in the last pin maybe a hair and also to see the grouping at that range. Lost two fletchings and all three practice broadheads were toast....that was a $30 mistake. Of course, it was probably also the best group I'd shot all practice season up to that point, even from the ground.
  14. Last time I saw, only taxidermy quality capes were fetching any appreciable money. Most regular capes were getting a couple bucks at trapper auctions, etc. You might find a specialized buyer who directly consumes the capes for a bit more.
  15. Is the firmware the latest edition? Moultrie released a firmware upgrade to the M80 that you can download from their site. It fixes most of the known issues with this cam. It's a great cam, though. I get great battery life (not as good as my SG550 but still one set will get me through a full season (Sept-December).
  16. Which store were you in? Henrietta and victor dicks didnt have any last weekend. I havent seen new lw in dicks since they were china made.
  17. Um, yes. All please. Once the bow is dialed in, my hunting bow no longer sees a bag or block target. Shooting at a 3-d target has immensley helpd with my shooting. Heck, I don't even shoot field points with it...only practice broadheads. I will take a small bock target when traveling out of state (portability reasons). I do have a nice bag, and they'll last forever when kept off the ground so it can swing. I'll use the bag if I feel froggy and want to launch some long distance arrows (60+). But, for hunting purposes, I'm never looking back after going the 3-d route.
  18. I've got more than 30 (probably closer to 40...just don't let the old lady know) of the Dick's store brand ladder stands. As well as a few hang-ons and sticks. The ladders, before going to the cloth seat this year, are great. In fact, I've got several that have been up for 10 years...10!!!!!!!!! And, they haven't been out of the woods since going in on day one. I'd say that's much better than ODW... I don't think they carry LW now, but before they did, I got an Alpha and sticks on clearance for dirt cheap - and the mgr. gave me 15% off that price on top of clearance pricing. And, most people would likely agree that LW is the pinnacle of tough hunting equipment (for hang and bangers, etc.). Their sale tactics this year have been horrible though. Nothing is on sale now. The store in Henrietta had full prices on stands.
  19. Cool thread. I love to grow vegetables and fruit. My grandfather grew up on the family farm and that was our thing. He moved to Florida last year and I kind of struggled with it this past year...it wasnt the smae without him. Still managed to grow some decent stuff.
  20. Harvester crush rib and blackhor. 209. Loading and cleaning are a dream compared to 777 and some of the other sabots i have shot.
  21. Yeah ill be going this year. Going the second weekend. The weekdays are much better to navigate the crowds. Bass pro is about 15 min away and cabelas is 45 or so and very worth it if you havent been.
  22. You can only consign two per hunter MAX.
  23. I'm not familiar with the Encore and their barrel options, but what is the rate of twist? 1 in 28? I'm wondering if you are pushing it too fast with that short of a barrel? I'd stick with a 95 or 100 grain for the deer load (imo) and maybe see if you can slow it down a tad to see if the lower speed will help with that barrel length.
  24. Play it like a game with all of them. You have to find the victories, ha. I've had issues with all of them at one point. One thing that has shown consistent...BPS regular prices suck, Gander Mtn. has went downhill since going private - their gun dept. SUCKS majorly, Dick's is a roulette wheel for stock and service doesn't know much...but you can get steals on certain items at the right time of the year. Cabela's corporate deal with coupons sucks, but the Hamburg store was phenomenal when I went there. Service was top-notch. Some items were out of stock or not stocked, but what can you do... Keep in mind that today, most if not all of these stores practice JIT, regionalization, or something similar. Stocking and logistics is a hard science in the world now. It's unreal to see what goes on behind the public's eye with products, stocking decisions, and buying. Metrics rule what is stocked...and metrics met means profit...and that's what they aim to do.
