grouse have hatched
GrouseHunter replied to 16. ga hunter's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Great news, lets hope the weather is ok for them. I heard because of the mild weather this year it may be possible for a double clutch. What area are you in? -
For native birds like bobwhites you need a permit but for non native and pigeons it is ok as far as I know. I use non native birds like tibetian quail.

I know for a fact that this thread has cost Bob Many prospective members and I know him and the club quite well. A guy who defends him on the internet would be in line for a big discount and if he could make this thread go away then he would be in line for a free membership. The goal here is to get rid of this thread by turning it into a bunch of flaming and then hopefully the moderator will take it down. Dont buy itno this guy he is working for Bob.

I went to Partridge Run for New Year weekend and the weekend before that and we covered a lot of ground but I did not see any. I did hear one. Talked to a couple of people I met in there and they had not seen any this year. Thats all the hunting I have been able to do this season. mm

No argument here I am sure they are nice and care I do think the problem is at the top in that agency. I just think, and I am no expert by any means, that a good logging program of all state land could create jobs, make the state some money and help habitat a win for everyone but it is not being done. We hunted this past weekend on state land and had a nice time put some miles on us and many more on the dog but did not see a bird I am sorry to say. I may try someplace differedt this coming weekend if I can and we dont get snowed out. Any sugestions?

I agree and I think the DEC is only around to collect fees and give out fines however I just cant see why they dont see how much money could be made off a well managed wildlife population. I am sure the antis have a lot to do with it but I am also convinced the typical NY attitude is let someone else do the work and they will come in later and tax all the profit out of it.

You know out in Montana and the Dakotas, Kansas they do all kinds of stuff to protect and promote upland bird hunting and they get millions in cash from all the in and out of state hunters. An out of state license is usually more the $100 and all the hotel, food etc money yet these boobs in NY let a great resourse like that go down the drain. It is amazing how little we get for all the taxes and fees we pay. Best bird hunting I ever did was Montana and the people and the goverment out there couldnt have been more helpful. I call the DEC a few times looking for help and advice in NY for grouse and I have been waiting over a year for my call back.

I have been hunting up by Berne, NY with my dog. I only went once so far and did not see anything. I plan on going this weekend in the same area. I just would like the dog to see some birds I dont care if I shoot them.

How about grouse, have you seen any of them. Started hunting them last week so far nothing.

Bird hunting during deer season
GrouseHunter replied to CTHunter's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Yes , I have two American Brittanys. I am thinking I will go in a couple of more weeks I am looking for spots on the DEC website but I dont know how reliable that is. It says there are wild pheasant in north west NY and they give a lot of grouse spots. I guess I will have to try as many as I can. -
Bird hunting during deer season

I have been waiting for deer season to end before I try some grouse hunting. I dont go for the stocked pheasant anymore. Has anyone been seeing any grouse out there while deer hunting? -
What about a 5 yr plan to improve Small game Hunting
GrouseHunter replied to Dave's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
They should but I dont think they care. They get a lot of money from hunting license sales and I dont see them doing much for hunting. Small game hunting is about gone on Long Island and if you talk to the DEC they will tell you LI is full of game and has lots of quail. I have not seen a wild quail on long island in a long long time. Other states like ND, SD and MT really take care of game and manage it properly and they make a ton of cash from out of state hunters and they are super helpful to out of state guys. This is just another example of NY goverment , useless. -
Kansas Muzzle Loader Lease
GrouseHunter replied to hickory creek's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
I am planning to go to Kansas this year and will be looking to hunt quail. I am trying to set up 3 or 4 spots this time as last year I tried to go and had a place and the guy canceled on me the week before. I will contact you when it gets closer to the season and see if I can hunt a couple of days on your place. I will be staying in my camper and hunting alone or with one other person and my two dogs. Thanks for making this property avialable. If you do know the costs please PM them to me. Thanks MM -
Kansas Muzzle Loader Lease
GrouseHunter replied to hickory creek's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
I see quail season runs from Nov until Jan 31 and the deer season is most of that same time till about the first or second week of Jan. When would you allow Quail hunting and is it any good in January. I preferr not to have my dogs out running during deer season. mm -
Kansas Muzzle Loader Lease
GrouseHunter replied to hickory creek's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
What does the quail and pheasant population look like and is that hunting available. I am looking for upland spots out there. I would be looking to hunt 1 or 2 days no lodging needed. -
I wont be joining again. I was once very happy there but the last couple of years it went down hill. Owner just wants as many members as he can get and does nothing to improve hunting. Could not get one day out there last year there was always a crowd or a problem. To many members not enough land. mm

Long Island Field Trial
GrouseHunter replied to GrouseHunter's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Sorry I had to scratch my dog was in heat and I thought she would wrap up by then but did not. It never fails I have to drive all over the east coast to trial and finally there is one by the house and she is in heat. She is finishing up and I am hoping to go to PA for the trial at freeland Kennel club this saturday. Then to Polk PA for mermorial day weekend trial and then last one for the season in Exter RI then nothing until sept when hunting season starts. Its lots of fun but lots of driving. mm -
Long Island Field Trial
GrouseHunter replied to GrouseHunter's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Anthony Anyone can go to the trial to watch you will be welcome. I have my two dogs entered in one stake on Saturday. mm -
To those of you interested the Long Island Pointing Dog club is having a field trial on May 14, and 15 at Sarnoff Preserve in Riverhead. The info is on the AKC website. I am not a member of this club but I am entering my dogs and would like to see a good trial. It will be a pleasure not to have to travel far for a trial for once. mm

How much snow did they have I was thinking I would go up there this weekend. Do I need snowshoes.

This guy got shot by our Long Island clubhouse this past week. There are many more like him we have had about 5 taken and several missed.
