I probably won't get a chance to go this weekend but I'll try again next weekend. If successful, I would try some crow. I mean worst comes to worst it'll taste like crap and I spit it out or I'll get some good reading done in the bathroom.

I just want to say that right now crows are my sworn enemy. It seems that whatever I do, they are always one step ahead of me. I keep passing this one area where I routinely see a couple of crows fly by. A couple of weeks ago, I saw a flock of at least two dozen. So I order a couple of decoys and bought two calls. One mouth and one electronic. This time out. Not a single crow anywhere. I tried several different ways of calling and I still sound like a duck. Thankfully, I have the electronic call. I fell through the ice and sunk my feet into a small stream twice. Not fun. Those crows will not get the best of me. They will eventually go down.

Thanks all. Decoys arrived today. Looking to head out Sunday morning for some crow mayhem. The call (Haydel's Triple Tone Crow Call) sounds more like a duck than a crow. Odd.

Just curious.....why do you think a religious organization would be anti--hunting?? Hunting for sport is specifically prohibited by the Torah. Shooting coyotes would not be kosher. I can make a case if I plan on selling the hide or state how I'm maintaining balance in the eco-system but it's such a fine line. I don't want to be put in a position to have to defend for my job whether I'll win the argument or not.

With a teenager in the house I get to see all those movies....I knew what it was....LOL. Kinda sad a guy has to fly under tha radar like he is because of what he does. I got a good laugh out of this because I actually am Asian. Don't worry, it's all good. I am not offended. =)

Small game hunting is over but I refuse to stop so I guess its time for me to switch over to crow hunting. I just order a crow mouth call, a normal decoy, and a second decoy that has an electronic call built into it. That gives me a total of two decoys. I'll jerry-rig a plain white bed sheet as my blind in the snow. Using a 12 gauge (#6 stell shot) with full choke. Anything else I'm missing? Will two decoys be enough? Thanks!

I work for a religious institution that probably frowns on hunting and has a fairly keen PR department so I had to come up with a completely new name since I did not want anything traced back to me. I picked Toruk Makto from the movie Avatar. It was the title given to those who were able to tame the big flying monster in the movie.

Thanks all. I'll pass this message along and maybe this will get him to consider taking the course.

I know someone who is dyslexic and therefore he figures a hunting license is impossible for him since he would have a difficulty with the written exam at the end. I wonder if they make special exceptions for such cases. Maybe have him take an oral version of the exam or something like that. Anyone know if anything like that is available?

I should get my camera and take a picture of that guy...so I'll own him.

Supposively he was wearing the tie in honor of his late grandmother who was a huge Packers fan. Dealership claims that they gave the employee five chances to remove the tie and he refused each time.

Guess I'll have to try again with a spotlight after the snow is gone. This winter is brutal. Thanks for the advice.

So I went out last night looking for raccoons and if I came across a coyote, that too. With 4 degree temps, ice covered snow, and a jerry-rigged maglite, I discovered the hard way that night hunting is not that simple. I normally hike up the side of this mountain during my regular day hunts but under these conditions, I was getting my butt kicked. I had to stop twice to rest. I'm not the most fit person in the world but I hit the gym twice a week and always finish it off with a 4 mile run. Of course with all the noise I was making, we didn't see anything at all. Must rethink the strategy. This didn't work at all.

DuckHunt. I am also new to hunting (started hunting 2 months ago) and I'm also from NYC so here's what you need to know. #1. Gun license and hunting license are completely independent of each other. You can technically hunt without a gun license and you can own a gun and not hunt. #2. You want to apply for your gun license as soon as you can. It takes about 10 to 12 weeks to process. You can forget about getting a handgun/pistol. In NYC, that's almost impossible. Rifles and shotguns are easier. You would have to go to the rifle and shotgun office in Queens. Here's the info. They open late on Mondays. http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/permits/rifle_licensing_information.shtml Technically, once you apply, you can purchase a shotgun or rifle. If stopped, police can check and find out that your license is in the processing stage and you would be fine but I wouldn't chance it though because they have to take your weapons into their possession until they can clarify that you have applied and who know how long that would take or how you would be treated during the process. #3 Obtain your hunting license. Again, you don't need a gun license to apply for a hunting license. To apply for a hunting license, you need to complete the hunters safety course. Here's a list of state-wide course schedule. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9191.html If you don't see one near you or at a appropriate time, check back ever so often because they update it as new courses are offered. Once you pass the test you will get your hunter's safety certification in the mail in a couple of business days. This allows you to go to any local retailer that handles hunting licenses and by a license. The hunters safety certification is good for life. Hunting licenses are only good for the hunting year so you will have to buy a new one each year. You can also purchase it online. If you are going to trap and/or bow hunt, you need to take a trappers class and/or bow hunting class respectively. #4 Rifle and shotgun purchase. New York State has the strictest gun laws in the country. New York City is even stricter. You have to remember that NYC seperates itself from the rest of the state. You can carry a shotgun without a license in Westchester but you can't in the Bronx. Know the law before you purchase. Read the entire Penal Code 260 regulating possession of fireamrs. .htm'>http://wings.buffalo.edu/law/bclc/web/NewYork/ny3(.htm Rule of thumb. If you are not sure, ask. You can message me if you want. Second rule of thumb, if you go with a semi-auto, 20 million restrictions apply so tread carefully. If you stick with bolt-action, pump action, break-action, lever action, or single shot...you're much better off. Hope this helps.

So what type of shot do you recommend? BB? #2? Something else? And would you go full choke? -Thanks.

I was really looking for raccoons at the moment but will shoot a coyote if I come across one during my next trip out. I've only been hunting for 2 and a hlaf months but it seems I picking things up real quick. The lights I have with red filters aren't very bright and the spot light I have doesn't have a red filter. I was hoping to cut it without have to purchase more equipment. I think after a successful night hunt I think I'll be ready for the coyotes.
-
How much of a significance would it be to use a spotlight with a red filter versus a spotlight without one? For raccoons and then for coyotes? Without hounds for either of them. As in, if I don't have a red filter should I just sit at home because I would be wasting my time?

I've watched both episodes so far. Awesome show. Steve Rinella really gives a great argument about the positive aspects of hunting. I have it programmed to record on my DVR and will definitely buy it once it comes out on DVD. 1. FYI: Steve Rinella is actually from Michigan. He only recently moved to Brooklyn a few years back. 2. FYI: If you watched the very first episode (Alaska), he made a couple of hunting taboo's. A. shooting up hill at a deer peeking over a ridge and B. He did not point the muzzle in a safe direction while trying to clear a misfire because he didn't want the deer to escape.

yes, I got excited about the call when it worked like a charm my first time out but I haven't had any luck with it ever since. My kills now comes from just hiking around the woods and spotting a squirrel here or there up in the trees by chance.
-
Looks like we just missed each other, jpolihro. I got there at 6:30 and left right before noon. I also came away empty handed.

I'm probably going to head out there Saturday morning but still up in the air. I'm a night owl so it typically comes down to how I feel in the morning. I have a birthday party to go to Saturday night so chances of Sunday morning is slim. Monday is also a definite for me. I've been to Sterling Forest a few times. I've seen a ton of squirrel, coon, and deer activity. Have not seen any signs of coyotes. Then again, I've never been coyote hunting before so I might even realize the signs even if their right under my nose.

Second day, second squirrel. This time I didn't miss with the 22. Tons of deer, squirrel, and 'coon tracks. Thanks for the tip, Dinsdale. Dressed this squirrel whole right after the kill. Will add it with the legs from yesterday and bring then over to my parents. My mom knows a few rabbit recipes that should work just as well with squirrels.

Second day, second squirrel. Another thing I forgot to mention is the time of the day. Squirrels come out first thing in the morning to feed right after dawn. Since there are no nuts left on the trees, they have to come down to the ground and bring the nuts back up to their little cubby hole. After they finish feeding, they go back to sleep and come out for a second feed near the end of the day. Based on the fresh nut shavings I found, it seems they are in back in bed by 9AM. I haven't tried hunting them at dusk.
