  1. Just a curious argument. Savage Axis (formerly Edge) versus Thompson-Center Venture versus Remington 700 SPS. Which is the best bang for the buck? Note 1: They're different price ranges so the more expensive ones needs to be better to justify the extra cash. Note 2: I know the Remington is not really in the budget/entry level class but I threw it in there because it's less than $100 more than the Thompson-Center Venture so then one would ask why not spend a little extra change if you are potentially getting a better gun?
  2. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/2011/06/16/2011-06-16_woman_stabs_burglars_killing_1_now_faces_murder_charges_thugs_hit_home_where_she.html You know what they say...better to be judge by 12 then carried by 6.
  3. Welcome from NYC. Do all my hunting in Orange County.
  4. Bug is "dug in like an Alabama Tick". Took my hunter's ed course 9 months ago. Bought my first firearm 8 months ago. Went on my first attempt at hunting 7 months ago. I've already bought a 22LR, 308, and a 12 gauge. I'm eyeing more. Spend my work day in the office daydreaming of hunting. I say it is well bitten.
  5. Ha...yeah. I was thinking of something in a .223 to fit between my two currrent rifles (.22LR and .308). Or maybe a Henry Golden Boy Repeater in .22 magnum as a "fun" rifle. Unfortunately, my wallet thinks I should wait another year or so. :-[
  6. Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin? No...I'm just kidding.
  7. Great. That's what I got for the most part when I googled people's opinions but there were a few who felt you need a 22WMR or 17HMR at minimum. This means I don't need to invest in a new rifle. Thanks, all.
  8. I read a lot of postings on-line debating between whether .22LR is enough to humanely take down larger small games such as raccoons, oppossums, foxes, etc. I plan to do a bit of raccoon hunting this coming season. Just wanted to hear some extra opinions.
  9. Thanks. I'll give it a try the next time I'm out there. I just won't be throwing $8 lures in there. Will stick to the basic weight, hook, and some live bait or something.
  10. I live in NYC but fortunately I live close to the Hudson River. I any fish you're going to catch off the Hudson are Strippers and Carp. Yesterday, fishing off the rockly ledges, I wasn't getting anything with my Rapala Shad Rap (F7). I was casting and reeling. Wasn't getting anything. Saw some guy up the river who had his rod propped up on the rocks and had his line going out and to the bottom. I guess he was fishing the bottom. I decided to try the same thing so I tied a weight to a foot and a half in front of my Rapala. And well...it got stuck on some river bed rocks forcing me to cut the line. Anyone has a recommended setup? Appreciate the feedback. Thanks in advance!
  11. jusputtn: Yes. Adding to that, the anti's will look at Ted as "oh, that's because he's one of them" and immediately write him off where as they will look at Mark and say "but he's one of us" and will listen to his points.
  12. I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone and whole heartily apologize to anyone if I did. I was simply stating the fact that we hunters are viewed negatively by many who don't share the same views. I am NOT saying I share those same views. If I do then that would mean I'm calling myself the same things since here I am at work and rather then finish my budget reports, I'm watching hunting videos on youtube. I also don't think that Nugent is with his hard life-style is the best diplomatic representative. Key word is diplomatic. Steve Rinella, yes. Mark Zuckerbergs, yes. Nugent being diplomatic? For some reason I see Nugent starting a bar fight and that's cool, I'm all for that as well but if I need to win a debate, I'm not sure if I'd pick Nugent to be the guy.
  13. I certainly think Mark Zuckerberg is a much better face of hunting then Ted Nugent particularly since the general stereotype of hunters as being uncivilized and uneducated rednecks. Nugent doesn't help negate that stereotype. Also, Nugent has no credibility to the general mass compare to Mark Zuckerberg. I was as excited about this as I was when Sergey Brin was spotted wearing ViBram FiveFingers shoes. I get way too many stares when I'm walking around in mine.
  14. I used Wellbutrin aka Bupropion. Just tell your doc that you want to quit smoking and he'll write you up a prescription. Their not cheap (roughly $120 for a months supply) but if you think about the amount of money you spend on smokes, they're actually cheaper. I took it for a month. You keep smoking for the first 2 weeks because that's how long it takes the drug to kick in. Once it kicks it, you will naturally lose the physical craving. Talk to your doctor about it. The key word is "physical". It takes your body 72 hours to purge itself of nicotine. It takes your body a week to physically re-adjust to not receiving nicotine. After a week your body no longer craves it. The rest is mental and unfortunately that's purely up to you. I smoked a pack a day for 10 years. When you're doing something 20 times a day for 10 years, you get so use to the routine. I chewed sunflower seeds to help keep my hands and mouth occupied during times I would normally be smoking. Took me almost a year to go through the mental stage of it. I gain 10 lbs from all the sunflower seeds I ate in that year but has since dropped it. Now I can't stand the smell of cigarettes. Haven't smoked in 7 years.

  16. Went to Davis Shooting Sports in Goshen yesterday because I figured traffic to Calverton will be a killer being so close to the Hamptons on Memorial Day Weekend. The place was nice. I enjoyed it. Only issue was being tied to the bench and the hourly rates. My hour ran out before I was able to finish sighting my last gun and didn't want to pay for another whole hour when I only had 15 minutes of work left. I figure I'll save that work for next time. Will check out Calverton next. Thanks for the recommendations.
  17. Thought this is interesting. It's a online database of every firearm and/or weapon used in movies. http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Main_Page
  18. Unfortunately, no where. I'll at least drive out to the Calverton range to sight in my rifles. Thinking of renting a canoe and paddling down the Delaware Water Gap and do some fishing/camping next week though.
  19. Created an online photo-hosting account. Listed it as my signature. I'll slowly add some.
  20. Fasteddie, You can keep your little pea-shooter. PS: Watch him shoot the mannequin at the end.
  21. Don't worry...I'll volunteer myself as their natural predator. Are you kidding? I would gladly put pork on my table and help the ecology at the same time? Win-win situation if you ask me.
  22. I think 100mm just isn't enough zoom to spread the depth of field. Oh well. I bought because it was also considered one of the best portrait lens. I figure I might as well get some macro use out of it but honestly most of my trial runs have come up blurred so I haven't really used it. Most of my pics are landscape shots and my travel pics. I'll set up a site sometime this week and post the link so that I don't bore the rest of the hunting community.
  23. Wooly, What are you using for your macro's? I use the Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro. Even when I open it all the way to F32, the depth of view is still too small and light is hard to come by at F32. Thanks
