  1. 230 gr sabot with 100 grains of powder.(two pellets actually). He was a 70 yard broadside chip shot.
  2. Killed a decent 8 pointer this morning at 7:15. 170 pound dress. Had 10 deer in the field, two of them similar sized rack bucks. I took the one that presented the best shot. Dropped right there. Around 24 hours spent prepping this food plot between the field and stand work plus scouting for 7 minutes of hunting. Will try to get a picture up soon. They are on my phone.
  3. For just $549 you can buy a Reconyx HC600 which you can protect with a code. Its a 4 digit code.
  4. Sorry Doc, I can't stand a thief, but with all the experience I've had with Cuddeback cameras and their customer support, they probably saved you years of frustration. May want to staple a thank you note to the tree.
  5. Killing a doe with fawns isn't a big deal. We usually wait until later in the season and select the does that are on the "chopping block." We usually select either yearling does because when they have their own fawns the next spring they will most likely move to their own home area or big old does with healthy button buck fawns. Our prime does (2,3 and 4 year olds) with fawns get a free pass in most cases for population purposes. I like to keep the does around for the rut for buck bait as well. There are some cases where a prime doe with fawns will get herself killed, especially if she can't mind her own god damned business. Three years ago we had a beautiful 2 year old doe with a unique shaped throat patch who discovered our blind. Everynight after that she would come to the field, stare, stomp and blow at the stand whether we were in it or not. Every deer for a mile would here her carry on. Two years ago she was there with her fawns and somehow remembered that stand. She did the same thing until one night she wandered in to about 15 yards and a .300 mag round went tearing through her cupped blowing lips and out the back of her head. Her fawns got through the winter just fine and a 6A tag was never utilized on a more deserving deer. Surprisingly we saw several more deer after her harvest.
  6. Jim Shockey wrote an article about shooting record book animals and how to proceed with documentation, verification and getting witnesses. Lots and lots of witnesses. I actually read the article in mid November 2009. A couple weeks later my father killed an upper 160's 11 point. Before we had the deer out of the woods, I had already called everyone I could think of to come see the deer including two NYS Troopers who were on patrol in the area. Within a day there were stories of the deer being jacked, killed in early September, shot on a game farm, etc.... Fortunately we had several witnesses who saw the freshly killed deer as we took it out of the woods with sunlight still in the sky so the rumor posse looked a little foolish. I hope this story has a happy ending, but its not sounding good.
  7. My $.02 to add is that baiting conditions unnatural behavior in deer. Deer will show up shortly after a feeder goes off or the guy with the bucket leaves. Food plots offer a 24/7 for the life of the plot food source. I have also been told that you can't bush hog corn but never actually seen it in writing. Never looked that hard either. Isnydes, are you a scorn baiter? Get off your lazy rear and go make yourself a plot if it is so great.
  8. That should have said "not for a debate."
  9. I figured it out. Was a little mentally deficient..... I'm putting these up merely for a comparison and for a debate. This is a buck that has been measured. 26.5" main beams, 50+" in tines, 13" G2's. 10" G3's, Circum. measurements (38") are skewed due to velvet, 22" spread but he would still be a mid to upper 150's hard antlered buck.
  10. I have pics of a velvet racked 8 point mount that had a tape put to it and it goes just over the 160 mark. Back story on it is that he was euthanized after an injury led to infection. Now here is where I need help. I have posted pics before but can't seem to find where to do it now. Can someone give me a quick crash course.
  11. Just read online that the King Buck will be panel scored by B&C on Saturday. Anyone else hear this? If I missed this info on another thread, my appologies.
  12. Great buck. Good luck. And for the love of Christ, don't defrost the freezer. That is like taking a knife hunting. Just a guarantee that you won't get him.
  13. You would see the long thick tail in the first pic if it was a Mt. Lion.
  14. "There was that one time..." stories happen all the time. Sometimes we over think things, especially deer noses. Like most people have mentioned, reduce your scent, accept that you can't become scent free and that there is no magic potion to cover your scent, and play the wind to the best of your ability.
  15. Right on with erussel. Winter rye. I plant it every year. Just broadcast it. Grows just about anywhere, including the grease on the back of the tractor.
  16. Some things to think about concerning cover scents and odor elimination. If you wash your boots and clothes religiously, how do you put them on? Soon as you touch them they are contaminated with human odor. Wear gloves? How do you put them on? As you walk to your stand what keeps you from disturbing the ground? Ground disturbance is what most tracking animals actually pick up on first. Then what do you guys do to keep those epitheleal cells, the ones that are constantly falling off of you, from falling off? That, amongst other things, is what animals associate with human odor. I have 5 years of canine handling experience. Long story short, cover scents are a scam. Scent elimination is impossible. Perhaps products like Scent-Away will allow you to have slightly less scent out there allowing a deer to come in closer, but it isn't fool proof. The only way to beat a deer's nose is to keep up wind from them and be lucky.
  17. Saw a road kill a couple nights ago. He was still in velvet but it was cracked and going to be rubbed off probably that day.
  18. I'm on the baby yote bandwagon.
  19. I didn't mean it to sound like I was accusing you of referring the picture for to DEC, but that comment earlier is what turned the thread to the legal world. I hate talking legal anything, just tried to clear up some common misconceptions. I would rather talk about anything but legal BS. Hey, the Yankee's got Ichiro and lost A-Rod for close to 6 weeks.
  20. wdswtr, providing specific a location or coordinates is different then someone saying that there is a picture of a bait pile on some unknown tract of leased land somewhere in NYS. I've never heard of satelite monitoring and I have been involved in the eradication of about 150 dope grows. To the rest, the term "execution of duties" or something similarly worded is what is granted to ECO's to enter onto private property. That is not a carte blanche to enter onto private property. If an ECO makes up an excuse to enter the property for a witch hunt, then that is an integrity issue. Like everything, it is written in black and white but has gray all over it.
  21. Deer hanging in back yard = PC to check that the tag is properly filled out and kill is reported. "Cash Crops" = PC to remove. Most of the cash crops are spotted from helicopters. DEC also uses helicopters at times for bait sites. A report of a guy growing weed doesn't give law enforcement to walk the property, but it will get a helicopter flying over head. Not sure how this thread turned to law class.
  22. I've been a law enforcement officer for 15 plus years. I have taught law courses at a law enforcement academy. Thanks to handling a canine for four years, I'm especially well versed on 4th ammendment case law. I'm not going to argue with you guys on legal authority of ECO's and other law enforcement. There are horror stories everywhere and most of them are skewed. I can promise you that ECO's can not enter anywhere that is wooded just because.... A rumor is not probable cause. A written or oral tip from a neighbor doesn't equal probable cause most of the time. If it is posted then it is off limits for the most part. If you are seen with a rifle and hunting clothes on posted property, that is PC for a ECO to enter your property to check your hunting license, not to go snooping around for a bait pile... unless it is visible while checking the license. There has to be an exigent circumstance (fleeing suspect, human life in danger (where your domestics come into play bushwhack)etc...)), consent, or a warrant to enter a dwelling. An ECO can't just go, swing open the front door and rummage through a guys fridge and freezer because he was caught poaching. A judge will swear out a warrant and be very specific as to what is searched. Next to your body, your home is your greatest expectation of privacy. For the most part if a law enforcement officer wants to enter a house you get a warrant or consent. Preferrably a warrant. I would be willing to bet that the guys who lost their meat gave the officer consent to enter the house or they had a warrant. I've worked along side ECO's for several years and have been extremely frustrated at just how many ways their hands are tied. Lastly, I guess why I am so unwilling to jump a person over a picture posted is because I have been to court and seen much more damaging evidence dismissed as not being what it looks like. Unless it is a slam dunk I don't get pumped up.
  23. Plain and simple, this statement is wrong. That is a clear cut 4th ammendment violation. There needs to be probable cause or exigent circumstances for any officer to enter private property without a warrant. In general the any law enforcement officer can only go where the general public is allowed to go. A picture on a forum or even the neighbor calling doesn't amount to Probable Cause. If the complaitant can bring the officer to see the violation without entering onto the private property then that can amount to PC. About the only exception is Border Patrol Agents entering onto private property within 25 miles of the border in order to patrol the border. And even that doesn't mean they can go snooping around just because... Yeah, you go get him. Because from that picture and his words you can tell with 100% certainty that this picture didn't come from NH where it is legal to feed and bait deer with land owner permission. (this last statement is tongue in cheek)
