  1. Magic hour, first sit in this spot for the season. Have to change it up. Good luck everyone!
  2. ł like to be in my spot and settled in at least one hour before legal light. However ł don't play with my phone, as sensitive as deer eyes are to light the last thing ł want is my pale face lit up in my tree like a hovering ghost. My glasses would look like headlights with the reflection of this Forum in them, ł would nickname that treestand the whomping willow.
  3. My apologies if that came across wrong Steve. ł didn't want to be fumbling with the chunk of plywood at an inopportune time. Had ł a chance earlier in the season ł would've had the seat already in the stand. It's an old school ladder stand a quarter mile in to the woods. Didn't know how slow ł would be walking with the dark sky and lingering snow drifts and certainly don't want to sound like a freight train at the last minute. ł sit in it at least once every season in memory of my Great Uncle, work schedule has pushed my reflective sit to the last minute this year.
  4. No reason needed, is there something wrong with waking up early? Had to carry out the plywood seat and get everything set up so ł could be quiet from 6:30 on. Setup was flawless and ł wasn't going to go back to my cabin for an hour. Early is on time... Limited moonlight made for nice observation of the night sky which was icing on the no deer cake. Out of curiousity, anyone ever spent the night before opening day in a heated blind?
  5. ł seen a ruffed Grouse, found it's nest. Sat in my late Great-Uncle' s stand from 5a-11a then moved to finish out the day. Heard two shots at the very end before dark, not a lot happened in 9M from what ł could tell. ł am begining to think the Yote activity is having a negative impact in my neck of the wood... Might have to target them next.
  6. Thanks again to everyone who helped out with this project. ł look forward to getting this hedge started.
  7. Wind changed direction after the rain cleared, blew my scent directly in front of me. Decided to get down and go for a walk once ł determined it wasn't letting up. Walked out to my southernmost property entrance. Walked up my dug road and after trekking 3/4 of it, methodically choosing my limited steps to be quiet as possible, the wind shifted AGAIN. ł stood still, hoping my stillness would somehow limit my scent destined for the area ł was stalking. Within 2 minutes something caught wind of me, bumped it over the ridge... gone from sight in seconds without offering a glance at any possible headgear. It is very steep slope and ł wasn't even going to attempt it with the snow ł had been trudging through. Walked back to my stand ł started the day in and hooked a left, uphill at a much easier to handle slope. Got to the old farm ł have permission to hunt and ł walked the wooded edge of the back pasture circling around where the bumped deer went, finally the wind was cooperating! A huge branch falls nearby and the deer ł have been unrelentlessly pursuing was bedded right next to the opposite corner about 150 yard away. With the crash of a tree chunk assumingly shifted by melting snow in it went. With the flick of a tail and a handful of effortless bounding strides it was veiled in the protection of 1'x1' neon green signs. That snow drifts on the hillside were 2'+ and made my 5 mile walk feel like 100 miles. As legal light comes to a close my neighbor messages me, he shot a big doe and needs help dragging it. Regardless of how trying it came be at times, ł wouldn't trade an unfruitful day in the woods for anything.
  8. 40° and winds in my face. 6" - 18" of snow still on the ground, made for a slow walk in. Brought the umbrella, had it set up just in time for the rain to start... Good luck everyone!
  9. Whatever you do, be safe.
  10. ł have had them venture through my land, just trying to think of ways to keep them in my area. Not sure if anyone has any experience trying to replicate a den and if so were they successful.
  11. Anyone think burying a cement culvert and creating a stone entrance would work as a "Pop-Up" hibernation spot? ł'm thinking, bury it a few feet below grade, make sure there is drainage so it doesnt have rising water and create an entrance that resembles a natural fissure. Then brush it in with a a thicket of blue/black/raspberry... Something tells me this would work.
  12. Years down the road ł can harvest some for various woodworking projects. ł haven't found anything that indicates Ruffed Grouse will like this but my gut tells me they will. Any wildlife calling it home will be nice whether it be rabbits, birds... Woodchucks be damned. Also wouldn't hurt to have this as a wind break on the northernmost parts of my property especially since that's where ł am most susceptible to trespassers. (2 in 5 years)
  13. ł will be in Mansfield this weekend, have to drive right through your area. ł will send you my telephone number.
  14. Thank you, getting much closer to my home range. Much appreciated.
  15. That would be awesome Zag, thank you!
  16. ł had never heard of it before today, was listening to a random podcast about Woodlot management and it was mentioned. Podcast was done by a homesteader based in NY and was hosting a Farmer out of PA. Started reading about it and now ł want to grow some on my land. Not 100% sure where ł eill locate it but ł have a few ideas.
  17. Thank you, if ł can't find any local ł will certainly take you both up on this. (Wouldn't hurt to mix seed from multiple sources in to my trench.) ł have a feeling there is some nearby. It grows in zones 5-9 and is known to be about the most impenetrable hedge you can plant. So much so, it was used to herd livestock before barbed wire.
  18. ł live in Niagara County, work in Erie County and own land in Cattaraugus County.
  19. Does anyone in the WNY area know of a stand or hedge of Osage Orange? ł would like to get a hold of some hedge apples to break open so ł can start a hedge from seed. If anyone has some they are willing to share or knows of a place on public land ł would be very appreciative.
  20. Congrats on all the harvests, ł have had to spend so much time in the office ł still have all my tags. Will be doing an all day sit Sunday, hoping to get out of work early enough Saturday to make the drive and get an hour or two in the woods.
