Shawn, thanks..I was just wondering about it . That .25 that you guys use sounds really good, for the larger game.

I just found an old book, in a box, that I got as a kid. It's a child's book, it has drawings, but no photos and from around 1951. On the 1st page it says that it's written for children. It starts out with a kid deer hunting with his father and the father shoots a buck, it includes the son preparing leather for snares and shows him setting a trap. It tells what he trapped and in one of the drawings the kid is carrying dead small game, There is a picture(drawing) of the father carrying the dead buck and then hanging it in a tree. I loved the book. Imagine if now you gave that book to a kid, after all it states that it is a child's book, and he brought it to school...I wonder what the teacher would say. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think that they'd like that book. I think times have changed. I'm passing the book down thru a relative on Christmas.

Pygmy. my hunting pellet guns are REALLY low tech.. break, load, close, aim, shoot. They are pretty powerful, for an airgun that is, . I'm predominantly a squirrel hunter, and I need some power because, I want instant kiils like we all do. . I have 2 pump up Crosman pellet guns, but they are not quite as powerful, and it's nice not to have to pump all the time... It must be tough to hit pigeons consistently in the head, it looks like their heads are bobbing all the time. lurking.. I'm not looking to get into air gunning for larger game than squirrels, but I am curious. Do you need to go for brain shots with the .25 for fox, or can you get good results with chest shots.

Pav2704.. It's easy, but can be inconvenient because there can be lines to check in and to get spots, and you may get to the window and find that the spot you wanted was taken. There are RULES and you have to know them, they are probably on line(I have old maps with the rules, but I think you get the maps on line now).. The rules include things like.. Weekends you have to get reservation, it's closed on a couple of holidays, you must hunt in the area where you park, when you check in before 8:30am you hopefully get your spot because you can not go to another spot until after 8:30 Before Nov. 1st and after Dec. 31st you don't check in, but now you got some new rules, and special (free) permits.. etc. ..( there are more rules), ... Rules can change so always keep current..Learn the rules, and don't just depend on someones(like mine) interpretation I assume that you want to bow hunt for deer, I haven't bow hunted there in over 20 years so someone else can fill you in on current rules... I THINK, that here used to be a system for letting bow hunters in before small game hunters. I don' t know if they still do that..(deer hunters get all the breaks.. just kidding) There are some good deer spots. Firearm(shotgun) season for deer is a whole different ball game..I never got involved in it.. There are other coops on Long Island where you do not have to check in. When you read the above posts I think you'll get the idea of what guys think is bad, and good. As far as private land, as you know it just depends on the spot... Again, I assume you are thinking only for deer. The coop works for me, I guess it's a mind set..I've been hunting there for a lot of years..

Shawn..I have all three types, in .22 as well as .177 Hopefully I will get to try them on pigeons.. I've been successfully using hollow points (RWS) on squirrel head shots, but I don't think that they'd deform, or flatten in a bird.I also like the destroyers(.22) for squirrel, and now I would use them on pigeons. thanks for that info

First light.. Now that is planning.. You got it all... You deserve success.. Good luck, I hope to read about it soon,

Hey. Outdoor Jay, I saw your deer photos from Long Island, really nice buck, but I' m curious do you still think Long Island is THAT bad..I'm just joking, I was glad that you did so well.. Upstate can be great, with more land, less people, good country etc., but we live here..You know, as the song goes.. "If you can't be with the one you love , love the one you're with" Thanks Lurking

I'd really like to see a head shot of that buck, maybe it'll get me head back into deer hunting since I do hunt that way. (I won't ask for your spot.. I swear)

First light..Good luck... Don't rely on this !!! , but I did see 2 scrapes at 10 the other day....As you walk down the little dirt path towards the ponds they were off the path that splits to the right..(between 10 and 12, but in 10) Of course a bow hunter could have got him. or he got pushed outta there, but I just figured that I'd pass it on because maybe he'd be somewhere in that nice piece of property between 9 and 10 with all the good cover in that direction... something to dream about !! I'm with you, I think that you have two good spots. I don't know, but I would think that more hunters in those areas keep towards the fields between 1, 10 and 12, and that the area between 9 and 10 get less pressure. I'd be curious to read your opinion on that . I like your strategy about closing off the section.. Maybe the guys in 1,12, or from 8(I think that's the # west of 9) will push them your way.. I'm sure that a lot of guys would disagree, but I think that as annoying as it can be sharing those properties out there with other hunters that it can actually be beneficial in that they may push the deer.

There used to be rumors that the coop would close. Another rumor was the end of pheasant stocking by the State. Some said that the talk was just nonsense paranoia, but it was something to talk about..Of course, some of us worried abut it, especially as we watched the area's population grow. Through the years some spots were lost to housing developments, etc. Where I shot my first LI squirrel, first quail, and saw my first fox den are now developments... So i just appreciate the coop, and accept the good, the bad and the ugly.

Shawn.. good job.. Nice catch..I was at the beach today, but didn't go to the inlet..I got involved looking at a snowy owl.. I won't ask where, but were you North , or south of you
-
Shawn what pellets do you use in the .177 for pigeons ? The destroyers worked for me on starlings. Are pointed better on pigeons for penetration since they are thicker.
-
outdoorjay.. You also signed in and out with the DEC to hunt Rocky Point both days.
-
He just wrote about hunting on LI yesterday, and how crowded it was. So if that was yesterday I believe that he was on LI today, and wrote it wrong...I can't imagine that he hunted all day here and then went home, packed and hunted up there this morning. Congrats again, glad that you weren't bothered by anyone today.. I assumed that you were Otis Pike yesterday, and today Rocky point.
-
Congrats on both.... Really nice buck..
-
I agree about the real thing. I have propped up crows and starlings when hunting them. I never just left them where they dropped, I'd try to make them look like they were standing, but maybe I didn't need to do that. It's just what I did, and do. I tend to over think things, as I'm sure you can see from this.
-
It sure sounded good though.. I liked the thought of it.. I'm glad that they are not smart, because I'm not either.

Beeman RS Dual Caliber Pellet Rifle
greybeard replied to greg54's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
I don't know about that gun, but squirrels can be hard to kill, so I only take brain shots. I've killed them with heart/lung shots, but lost some too. My .22 air rifle is reportedly 800 fps, as is my .177 . which are the 2 I use on squirrels.I prefer the .22 for my needs. Try different types of pellets, some pellets will shoot different in your gun... That's just my 2 cents. Ask Shawnhu, he's a wealth of info on airguns. I like watching squirrel hunting with airgun stuff on you tube. They also do some pellet comparisons if you check for that. I wish we had an airgun section here, but I guess that there aren't enough people interested. -
breeth.. It's my personality, I sometimes just have to know everything.
-
I see them under bridges, and underpasses, but I can't shoot there. I've seen guys shoot them with pellet guns on you tube. Are they tough to kill with a bb. ? Head shots ?
-
I wasn't gonna ask about pigeons, but now I'm sure glad I did.. Thank you all.. I went down to the beach today(saw a snowy owl) and on the way there I passed some areas that I waterfowl hunt in the bay.. There were flocks of pigeons near a spot I can paddle to in good weather.. They just have to fly a little bit past the spot that I saw them to get to where I like to hunt.. I have a whole new outlook on them,now...... breasted and.wrapped in bacon with jalapeno.. sounds like that's for me..I'll probably find them near waterfowl areas so I have to get smaller steel shot.

That was funny, catchy tune. I hear people talkin' about it, but never saw, or listened to it before.

I think that the last movie that I went to was Dances with wolves, when it came out,and I guess that I don't watch enough t.v But that clip of Home Alone was really funny, so maybe I need to watch more variety. I'm glad that he responded, I got a good laugh.

Lawdwaz...The dog makes sense. I never dove hunted, but have lost quail in fields.

mbucks...thanks, I have hunted spot one in Rocky Point, but don't remember if I hunted spot 2, I'll check it out .. I have my favorite spots in Rocky point, but tend to hunt in Otis Pike. I guess it's because at some point in the day I want to hunt the fields for crows in Otis Pike.. Thank you for that info. I think my next hunt out there will be Rocky Point, and try spot 2 Good luck today, I hope that as I am typing this you are gutting your big buck.. Bob
