  1. lurking.. You're right, the harbors should be on fire with fish. This time of year has always been good to outstanding up there... I just can't get out, like I'd like, to scout . Actually this time of year I shouldn't have to look they should be all over.Normally, over the next few weeks, I'd be up there in the kayak . Hopefully, I can get into the kayak next week... There are 0 good reports from the North Shore and my friends up there say it isn't good ,except for blackfish, but I'm looking for blues and stripers now. South Shore....I was at West End 2(Jones beach) today, with my wife, I wasn't physically up for fishing, but saw a couple of guys I knew who got 0 there today. I was there in the late morning, to early afternoon so I don't know how it was early...
  2. Geno.. Yesterday I actually walked so far east from 6 I was where the nudies(as we call them), or strippers hang out in the summer..So when it gets warm maybe I will write about the strippers.. Aaron, thanx, I'm workin' at it, I planned on squirrel hunting, but I can't leave this.. It can get much better, OR just END as quickly as it started
  3. Lurking..I've mainly used 5 1/2 inch white soft plastic with a paddle tail that looks like a sand eel for this bite... I rig with 1 oz. white lead head...Almost everyone else is using tins, and they do well with them, maybe better then me.. Tins outdistance soft plastics, but plastics are my "confidence" lures.. I did hit on tin, a 007, but I just prefer my plastics.. I like working the plastics better on my retrieve,.It's just MY thing. No real sense to it I guess. I see bait guys, but not too many for the past couple of days, I'm not sure how they are doing.. With a sand eel bite going on, I think more guys are just imitating the sand eels..As more types of bait, like bunker, herring and shad come thru more guys 'll throw bait I'm sure..But MAYBE they're doing good now and I just don't know. Bruno...I haven't gone east of "old field 9" at Jones yet this week.... I'm hoping that the fish from the eastern beaches today 'll migrate past us at Jones tomorrow.. Our bigger fish have been here for 3 days also. I'm glad your hittin' those big fish to the east.. Hope it continues for you. I'm not hearing from guys on the North Shore this week , and am wondering about fish up there.. If I hear that they are there I'll try to chase them in the kayak.. Since I threw my back out when I shot a goose from a bad position in the kayak in October, I've slowed down my paddling so I'm not searching the North Shore for fish like I should.
  4. You can fish field 6 in the day with no permits needed )except fishing license) . but like I wrote , they charge on weekends and holidays ( I THINK thru Thanksgiving, but not sure...I have an Empire Pass so I don't pay attention to that). There are quite a few guys fishing 6 now, so when you pull in you can get some info on the bite. Try field 6, or West End 2.. There are also SOME town beaches to the East tht don't require permits in the daytime now because it's off season, but read the signs to be sure and ask when you're in the lot.. IF there's fish around you'll see somebody The night permits give access to some areas at Jones and Moses in the day and also night fishing.. I can give you details, spots and thoughts but it's best if you pm me .. I'm on the computer tonight and Friday daytime if you want other info. good luck (My friend called me a little while ago, he got some nice bass with one bass over 25 lbs. this morning. but please remember It is not a blitz, and the fish are moving
  5. There is a pretty good striper run along some of the south shore, LI beaches.. They are on sand eels, so if you go you should add some sand eel imitations to your arsenal. .. 007's(green, or red tubes), a17, a27, deadly dick's, soft plastics..and see what they like I would not by any means classify the last couple of days as a BLITZ, just a good pick of fish with many keepers caught. Fish, around, or not some guys got skunked !! but, I saw lotsa keepers leave the beach The sand eels were right in the wash, and bass bellies were full of them..(I have a perfect sand eel lure in the sizes that I saw) I did see a shad caught, and heard that herring were around last week, but sand eel imitations seemed to be the lures of choice, but I guess other lures could be effective. The water is still warm and one guy I know was still catching some sharks in the surf last week. I have not seen bluefish, but they may show up at anytime, so I'd bring wire leaders just in case. I took a 40 inch bass yesterday, and only had an hour to fish this morning and got a 36 inch. My son in law kept a 34 inch yesterday .. I don't give up spots, but this is no secret so Jones Beach field 6, morning high tide seems the best.. I heard that many south shore beaches lit up, but I can not verify that.. It could end at any time, but as of this morning this is current info. I have been off the internet for quite a while, except to check emails one, or two days a week, so I'm not aware of other fishing reporrts.. I am only came home this morning because of a house issue that needed tending to, so you may want to check reports for additional info. So, that's all I got... I hope if there are any other surf rats out there that they get in on some fish.. Remember weekends you have to pay to park unless you have an Empire Pass, and if night fishing at Jones you need the night fishing pass...
  6. Something new always comes up, but I'm ready to do what I want to do. It's time to complete what they call the bucket list . I'm not ready to see the Grim Reaper yet ( I hope), but I better get my butt in gear. I had a little scare this year, so it made me think. Fortunately, it was nothing , . I got a seasons worth of hunting/fishing trips planned. I'm also, figuring on taking 3 more trips to the Hawaiian Islands over the next 3 , or 4 years (while I can) and hunting one specie on each trip. My wife loves it there so she's all for spending a couple of weeks on any Island that I want.. I'm well into the planning stage now for the first and contacted an outfitter to discuss the second. What's that saying ? Dream as if you will live forever...Live as if you will die today.. something like that anyway... so I'm dreamin' and livin'.. My adventures start tomorrow so I'm leaving the HuntingNY site for a long period of time after tonight, or tomorrow. I don't have an internet on my phone so I won't be following the posts. Have a great season !
  7. Queens, huh ..Is it a criminal thing.. If so, I bet you'd be the only guy on Rykers , who was inside for that . ha
  8. Doc, Well said again... We hear a lot of talk from those who oppose gun laws, about not complying. I've read it here many times. However, IF the laws are passed and if they are felonies, I suspect that almost all would realize the consequences, and comply. I do believe that responsible gun owners have an obligation to try to persuade those who wish to break the law that they will do themselves and our cause no good. Every arrest for a firearm related law is a statistic against gun owners and every statistic fuels the anti gun debate, and gives their cause more support. Those who preach that we should stand united and break the law, must realize that such a united stand for their cause will create a strong cause against them. I, as a gun owner, would oppose the lawbreakers, and many gun owners would feel the same. I always believed that as a group hunters and gun owner were believers in the American way and have no tolerance for those who violate our laws. I do not want criminals supporting my cause and would oppose them verbally as well as in writing. I am a true believer in our system and have zero tolerance for those who fight against it.They have a right to their views, and I will listen to try to understand the those views, but I will still be in opposition. Mr VJP is angry, but he is in law enforcement. He realizes the consequences more then most. I won't speak for him, but I suspect that he would not fight his brother law enforcement officers who are obliged to enforce the law. He, also, has to know that he will get caught and would not fare well inside as a convicted cop. As far as living the life as a fugitive, there is NO freedom in that life, and he realizes that. He also stated earlier that criminals don't do time. He knows, as a law enforcement officer, that his statement isn't so, I believe that it was written for effect. Lastly, I would hope that the oath that he took to enforce the laws, would prevent him from violating them, even if he disagrees with those laws.
  9. I'm getting a better understanding now. However, I don't agree with all you say, but you are entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to mine. Since our difference of opinion does not interfere with each others lives, disagreement and reading the different point of view can be a good thing. It'd be pretty boring if we all thought the same. I actually like respectful disagreement with my point of view. I don't ever really care if someone disagrees with me, I just like to present my side, and move on.
  10. The problem that I see with the voting by gun owners is, as often happens, many are not one issue voters. Not everyone's priorities are the same. There are many one weekend a year hunters, and many who just "kinda like it". . Many hunters want background checks. Also, I was surprised by hearing first hand how many were opposed to "assault rifles". Some of the opinions that I heard were men who are very far to the right on most issues. It wasn't a scientific pole, I just asked many of the people that I know, and it was quite a few. So uniting will be difficult. Remember the last 2 presidential elections, the right predicted the President's loss.I heard it and read it constantly. I don't know what planet they were on when they thought at the end that the Governor would win.( Early in the election I understood that prediction). Both times, the NRA ,united gun owners, and went after the President with all they had and he still won. I watch both liberal and conservative news shows especially during and after the election . After the election, the fact that the NRA was not effective became almost a rallying cry by the gun control people that the NRA is losing strength.Statements were made that the politicians now don't have to worry about them any longer (reportedly, most candidates that the NRA supported lost) The fact that the President won helped in uniting the anti gun people who were admittedly not united. I don't believe that they are really that united now, but they have certainly more support then they did. So , I do agree to unite gun owners to fight against those who hurt our sport, but it's going to take a well planned campaign, but even with that It'll take a lot to unite such a diverse State. One more thought. Those who believe that suing the State is good must remember that there is no person named Mr. New York. When the State loses a lawsuit, we pay with our taxes. A lawsuit by gun owners that costs the State a lot of money will not help the cause. The Governor doesn't reach into his wallet for the funds, he reaches into ours.
  11. Hector.. yup... but then he can also say when it happens again, REMEMBER.. I passed the toughest laws so I'm without sin.
  12. My point was not that I believe that is justifiable, or effective. My point was only that the reason that the Safe Act, or most other gun control laws are proposed, or passed is because many citizens want some action after a tragedy involving firearms. My response was ONLY why I thought it passed. Nothing more. Those supporters probably won't read the act, nor would they understand it if they did. It just sounds good to them. The politicians, realize that they need to do something, so they side with anti gun so that they can distance themselves from blame for non action. There are shootings daily in NYC, they are done by criminals and illegal guns. The politicians admit that, but what do you hear on the news by the Mayor. He will say that the gun laws outside of NY are too lax, and that the Feds must step up. Remember, that the Mayor, and Police Commissioner Kelly sent NYPD to Arizona to gather info on gun shows, and they could have called someone and got the info. It was done for effect on television. As stated above, the criminals will still get the guns, everyone knows that, but as I wrote, the politicians will blame other states and the feds, and many people will buy it. I have friends on both sides, and can tell you that many of them never heard of the title safe act, they only know that the Governor passed a strict gun law.The liberals love it, the conservatives hate it, but the liberals are less likely to know, or care about the details as long as it's strict. They(liberals,) will also support the politicians who voted for stricter laws. You really have to get this... The anti gun people don't care what the real facts are, they just want gun control.. Forget logic. Ask some liberals to explain the safe act to you and see what I mean, but first ask them if they even know what the safe act is. Some that I spoke to thought that it must have had to do with traffic
  13. Mr VJP...I think that maybe you have to realize that this government that you apparently fear, or hate welcomed your father and immigrant relatives with open arms. They were given the opportunity to realize the American dream. I would think that you, of all people, would be more appreciative of the American Government that gave you, and your family so much. It is the US system of laws that allowed them to live here , no one in your family was oppressed here. I have NEVER feared he Federal government, and they have served me well for my whole life. It's not perfect, and I disagree with some decisions, but it works. When you disagree, remember that in a democracy sometimes the other guy wins. You won't agree with them, but in time, if your positions are well founded and supported by the majority, you will have your day too. You may have served our country, whether in the military, law enforcement, or fire fighter, etc. so this may not apply to you. I think that there are a lot of people complaining and crying, and talk a great patriotic story, but when it comes right down to it they never served a day doing anything significant to protect, or defend the citizens.
  14. This is MY opinion.... It gives politicians wiggle room after murders are committed. They can state that they tried to stop violence by controlling guns.. Do they really believe it, I would think not, but now they can say that they tried. New York can now blame other States with less restrictive gun laws for the problems. They can also blame the federal government for not passing stricter gun control laws...Good strategy, pass the buck and get reelected. I woulda done it myself.. It's a winning strategy, there will always be murders in New York, but the STATE officials will say that they did their best to stop it.. When the President gave speeches about gun control, I said it'll never happen, because the Congress would prevent very restrictive laws. If I knew that, as did many others, then you have to know that the President did too. This Congress doesn't want to pass anything he wants, so why would any intelligent man think that this controversial issue would pass if he pushed for it. In the future, when a mass killing happens, he and his gun control supporters have someone else to blame. The Gun Control supporters will report that It happened because those non supportive elected officials didn't support the President....... It's just a game. It's kinda like the old parent thing.."I told you to do that, and you didn't listen, and ignored me, so NOW look what happened." It's worked since the beginning of time...
  15. My point was that there are consequences to violations of law. I did take some license and was a bit dramatic with the wife and children thing, but my point was that others suffer too for poor choices. Some may disagree with me, but I would challenge them to refute anything, using facts, not opinions,of anything that I wrote regarding effects of committing felonies.( I am assuming that the violations are felonies). Mr VJP I do not agree with your philosophy, but If you chose to fight the system then that's your choice I just pointed out the pit falls, and hope that young people, in particular, realize that they are accountable. Wrong choices may affect them throughout their lives, and a knowing and willful violation of law is a wrong choice. I ,too, am very versed in the system, but I don't agree that it is corrupt. It may, at times, get it wrong, but no one said that it was perfect. I agreed not to go further with my opinions so I will end it here. I'm not a fan of debating issues on line anyway, it's too easy to be an internet warrior. I'm for face to face debates, where we all know each others life experiences, and know if the facts presented are credible. I'm really not sure why I even got involved in this discussion last night.
  16. I have listened to people most of my life ready to violate the law because they believed the law was wrong, immoral, or unjust. You do know that some child abusers truly believe that they have the right to violate the laws because they feel that the government has no right to tell them who to have sex with.(extreme example). Tax evaders believe they shouldn't be taxed. Gang members believe that they have been deprived, etc. It all sounds good, standing up for your principles, fighting the system, etc. However, when you are arrested and handcuffed I assure you that you will think differently. You will be a different person from that day forward. After you are processed you will be taken to the correctional facility, and when that thick steel door slams behind you, you will realize that it is a sound that you will never forget. The men in jump suits, possibly orange, parading in the facility won't be hunters, they will be men like you,if you are convicted, felons.(Getting caught with illegal firearms would probably be a slam dunk conviction.) You may be convicted of having an illegal firearm, or similar charge, which on paper will read like the conviction of gang members for the same crime. No distinction . While you are incarcerated who will support your family ? Will they go on welfare? You can't support them in prison. I guess they can get cheap housing somewhere near the prison where some of the other inmates wives live. Maybe they can find some good welfare home. Most of the money you have will be paid to your attorney. You'll think a whole lot different about welfare housing while your family is living there. At school the kids will talk about your child's father, who is in prison. Unless, however, they live in some welfare housing, where hopefully it'll be more accepted. I guess your wives can make some new friends in the neighborhood, especially those who also have felons for husbands. But you guys are tough, you think you can take it. I guess you never realized that the mob and other, gang informants, etc. turned because prison was too much for them. AND some of those guys are tough, real tough, and some killers !! You think people will care about your principles, yeah, maybe a few, but most of us will forget you in a heartbeat. You will be social conversation for a little while then in a few weeks, know one will remember you, or your cause. REMEMBER the guys who fled to Canada during the Vietnam Era, name 5 of them. Can you name anyone killed, or injured at Kent State ? No one really cares. Even the NRA will have to turn on you ,if you are convicted, because they don't want convicted felons to have firearms. I know I'm ranting, but my point is that a violation of law is not something that is, or will be, taken lightly, and the consequences are severe.
  17. Yeah, Uncle(IRS) will always get his taxes, but these school (and property taxes) are local, not federal taxes. We have school superintendents that make over $300,000 per year plus perks. When increases of school taxes fail to get approval, these administrators threaten with cutting sports, etc. and that sends parents into a panic. When the school loses they hold another vote(after the threats), then they almost always get approved on the second vote. So citizens approve these higher taxes (a sore spot for me). You can't win !! When they win, we can't appeal ! When my local taxes broke the 5 figure mark, I thought of leaving, but decided that I really like it on LI so I stayed. So I can't bitch too much. I did appeal my taxes and got them cut a bit. I would like to know, why, on the Federal/State taxes, do more kids mean less taxes. They use more services, and pay less..I could never figure that one out. I know more kids cost parents more, but they don't have to have more kids, it's a choice.
  18. Good Luck, I hope you hit it BIG in your business. The move sounds like it's great for you. I used to dream about moving upstate, but as I got older I couldn't handle the cold. There was an area north of Albany, that we loved. I know that I would have adjusted to the cold, if I moved then ,and would have loved it, as I'm sure you will. I got to love it here over the past 25 years. However, when my real estate taxes went to 5 digits, a while back, we did think of leaving, but we looked at what we had and decided that it worked for us. I'm fully retired for 15 years now, so I play between traffic times So traffic, which was my biggest complaint, is now not an issue for me. I'm looking forward to reading about your adventures in your new life.
  19. Doc, I agree with what you say,and you certainly hit the points better then I did, but TV makes it worse, in my opinion. It incites hatred and intolerance I remember, as I 'm sure you do, Kruschev's words around 1960. "We will win without firing a shot". It didn't happen, but I don't like the direction we're heading, because, in my opinion, we are destroying ourselves, and I don't like where it could lead.both domestically and internationally.
  20. Grow hit it when she said television was the cause..Bad behavior is glorified and everything is forgiven especially for celebs. There are excuses for everything from sex to weight gain. EVERYTHING is an addiction and no one has to take responsibility. If you eat too much cake , it's not your fault, they'll say, sugar is like cocaine . If you get caught having an affair it's a sex addiction. Living together is totally acceptable, so when teen, or any unmarried pregnancy occurs ,how can we think it's wrong. What do you think happens at night(or whenever) when a couple lives together. Drug addiction, and alcoholism is no ones fault. It's a sickness. I agree to treat it like a disease, to cure it, but I doubt someone forced hooche down someones throat, or stuck a needle in someone's arm.It was party time that got out of control. Whether, or not you agree with gay marriage, it is easy to see why young people vote for it. For the most part, from what I see, marriage does not mean what it used to. In addition, the divorce rate is around 50%, so failure can be expected in 1/2 the cases, Marriage is viewed different then it used to, and that will never change. I read here that it's government policies causing all of the problems. As I wrote earlier , I disagree. It's fashionable to blame government for everything now. It's just another excuse. WE elect the politicians. They do the bidding of those that elected them in their local areas. If liberals put them in then they pass liberal legislation. If conservatives put them in, they serve them. Politicians goals are to be re elected. Compromise, which was the old way that everyone wants to go back to, is now demonized. In addition, TV and radio "newspeople", push their agenda to incite hatred for opposing views and the public reacts with hatred towards those who have those opposite views.Their followers believe the lies and half truths and follow their media heroes like sheep. They do not question anything ,as long as the host tells them what THEY want to hear and believe. There is no tolerance for any one who opposes those listeners, the hatred is rampant and contagious. These same people will then say that they love democracy, but won't accept that in a democracy, "sometimes the other guy wins". As long as this intolerance exists for other views, nothing will change, or get fixed.
  21. If anyone thinks that the Republicans, or any other party for that matter ,will change the morality in this country, they are living in a dream world. It is, what it is..They can tweak a few things, but that's about it. You cannot legislate morality, or conscience. You can cut some welfare, but you have to care(pay) for the children. You can legislate against some abortions, but the better off will go overseas, as they used to, and the poor will still have babies. Cohabitation before marriage is here to stay, so the institution of marriage is on its way down. The Thugs have no conscience., how do you legislate a conscience The politicians are not the cause of this problem, they are the result of how people think. No party is going to stop this rolling snowball of violence and immorality, etc..
  22. I ate pizza in Howard Beach, almost daily, for probably 10 years. I prefer cheese only, but sausage/ mushroom are up there. Recently, in my area, I found a guy who puts meatballs on pizza. I was buying it for a guy working in my house and It didn't appeal to me, but I had a couple of slices and found that it was really good. My mother used to make pizza at home, similar to Sicilian, and it was excellent. My wife prefers white pizza.
  23. Predate, it sure was a surprise to have a rabbit come in. I'm glad it WASN'T a skunk..That could ruin your day. My area didn't get storms today, but I could hear thunder in the distance so some spots nearby got whacked with storms I guess.. The air was VERY heavy, and had some rain, but not bad. I hope you get some muskies and write it up. I don't think that there is a fish that impresses me as much as a musky. The closest Esox that we got here are chain pickerel and that's a far cry from a musky. Glad you got outta there unharmed. JimR...When the rabbit realized what I was (I moved), he sure knew I wasn't who he wanted to see, so maybe it learned a lesson. .
