  1. arrowflinger,At what speed does your "bow" send an "arrow" down range ? fps And at what draw weight ?
  2. I'm still working on my 2nd pot of coffee Then court this afternoon.
  3. Wheel guns, flintlocks, and even smoothbore shotguns share a similar range. Should we allow these into bowseason, too? Obviously, there must be more to the decision than range alone. Blatant misinformation. Physics dictates that heavier projectiles, launched at equivalent (or higher) velocity, will maintain their velocity preferentially over lighter projectiles. I have to agree with G-man on this one. I know what these things do from years of hunting experience. The bolt's have the flight path of a stone. The velocity starts out great, but, falls off very quickly. I personally will not shoot over 30-35 yards.
  4. It hasn't happened to any significant level in Ohio.....growth in crossbows extends over vertical bows each year. Where did you get this information ? I hunt Ohio yearly, and have not been asked what type of equipment I would be using. I go in and I buy my license(s) and my Urban tags(anterless), and no one ever asks what I am hunting with.
  5. I was a commodities relocation specialist for the past 30 years. Would still be doing that if not for destroying my shoulder and arm while securing a load of machinery. Now I concentrate on chasing walleye in the warm months and deer in the cold ones.
  6. splitG2, If you know how to use hotfile, I can upload some good how to videos for you.
  7. I had the pleasure of taking my 14 yr old niece with me for a few trips during gun season. I let her use one of my guns, and she had fun. Didn't get any deer, but, I got to teach her alot about gun safety and she learned alot about deer and other game. Looking forward to having her with me again in the upcoming seasons. If all goes well, I will get here into archery hunting also.
  8. I have about 150 winchester 20ga, 2 3/4 in. hulls if you want them.
  9. This is a direct quote from NYB's stand on crossbows. These are all points of interest, as anyone that hunts or shoots knows, You have one thing that has to be done no matter what implement is being used. That one thing is PRACTICE ! The above statement is making it sound as if you can take a crossbow out of the box and be proficient with it in a very short time. When in fact, it will take just as long if not longer to master the use of a crossbow as it will the use of a stick, recurve, or compound bow. The same basic steps need to be followed to insure accuracy and effectiveness. The same dedication has to be applied to the use of either for one to become the best one can be with that tool. Just as you cannot take a brand new bow out of the box and use it without "tuning" and adjusting it for properperformance, and then the user has to PRACTICE with it to achieve consistent results. The same is true for the users of a crossbow, you have to maintain a level of practice that will ensure when the time comes to harvest an animal, this can be accomplished as cleanly and quickly as humanely possible. It seems that some folks have lost the jest of this whole thing, that the crossbow is another tool. And instead of all of this arguing and in-fighting, we should ALL be working together to achieve the same goal. To get MORE hunters back in the field ! ! ! The longer we continue to fight and argue between our own ranks, we are just making it that much easier for the "anti-hunting" groups to slip in a take our right to hunt away from ALL of US ! ! ! !
  10. From what I can find, there seems to be agreement that "Disabled/Handicapped" hunters should be allowed to use a crossbow during the early season. And that is what this Bill is ALL about ! Allowing Disabled/ Handicapped Hunters to use crossbows in the early Archery season to afford them the opportunity to enjoy Archery Hunting in the more pleasant months. Now, if we could ALL get together and put our arguments behind us, we could actually make this happen. And I for one would be very grateful. I understand that ALL of us have different opinions, and I respect that. But, PLEASE can we try and stay on the subject and hopefully show OUR support to help get Disabled/ Handicapped Hunters back into the sport. Thank You, Bill Shubbuck (aka shu9265) My real name.
  11. Only affiliation I have is with disability and my fellow hunters.
  12. That is what I thought this thread was all about. Contacting the powers that be in Albany to approve the passage of the Bill that would allow "Disabled" archers to use crossbows during the regular season. I saw No mention in the Bill about anyone else. Only Disabled Hunters
  13. I am not really sure how or where this topic took on a life of it's own and started to get off track. The point I am trying to maintain is the disabled hunters of New York should be given EVERY opportunity there is to get them back into the woods and hunting again. If that means using a crossbow, or having to use an ATV, to get to the stand then so be it. If a handicapped gun hunter wants to hunt, the State and Federal Govt.s make exceptions for them to use an ATV, or vehicle to gain access and be able to hunt. We as disabled archers should be given the same considerations. And if a crossbow is my choice, then damit, I should be allowed to use it.
  14. gun (gn) n. 1. A weapon consisting of a metal tube from which a projectile is fired at high velocity into a relatively flat trajectory. 2. A portable firearm, such as a rifle or revolver. Noun 1. crossbowcrossbow - a bow fixed transversely on a wooden stock grooved to direct the arrow (quarrel) bow - a weapon for shooting arrows, composed of a curved piece of resilient wood with a taut cord to propel the arrow cross·bow (-bō′) noun a weapon consisting of a bow set transversely on a wooden stock: the stock is grooved to direct a short, heavy arrow (bolt) or stone and notched to hold the bowstring, which is released by a trigger Definitions · Thesaurus · Examples · Pronunciations · Comments · translate to: crossguns in : [x] No definitions are available for crossguns. As you can see by the definitions: There is no comparison between a Gun and a crossbow. And the infamous "crossgun does not exist!
  15. OK bringing actual guns into this is changing the whole debate/discussion.
  16. Please share this knowledge and experience with us.
  17. I am sorry that you feel you are being triple teamed. I am NOT advocating the use of "guns" during the Archery season. I am simply trying to make the point that if it has a string and propels and arrow, it must be a bow. Weather it is vertical or horizontal. And nope, draw locks are NOT illegal. If they were, then NYB and others would NOT be pushing them as much as they do. They like crossbows, are available to persons with a disability. That does not allow them to draw and hold a standard bow.
  18. (Again, I am not trying to make this any kind of personal attack, and do not take it as one.) If you installed a "draw lock" I could. Then would we be on the same playing field ? And that point aside. I still have to be as clean and scent free as you do. I still need to scout for my stand weeks even months ahead of time, just like you do. I still need to play the wind, and weather, like you do. And above all, I still need to have good shot placement, again, just like you do.
  19. Its not personal, so lets not make it "you" having an advantage. Not having to draw is a significant advantage....you disagree? It is what makes bowhunting bowhunting.....yet you need not do it with a crossbow. OK. I am not taking this as any kind of personal attack and I am not trying by any means to turn it into one. I was simply asking what advantage we (the guys that would or do) use crossbows have. I still have to draw my bow, and @ 150# draw weight I had to improvise a way to handle this. I personally use a strap across my back and shoulders to pull the string into place with a standing motion. I would and do have a hard time doing this in my tree stand, very rarely do I get a second shot, due to the amount of movement involved. The other factor I have to contend with is the noise level. You can hear a crossbow go off from a pretty good distance when in the woods. Some folks think that because I (we) use a crossbow, that we can "stalk and shoot" like a gun hunter. Just like someone using a stick bow or a compound, it is NOT practical. Trust me, if I was still able to do it, I would still be hunting with my old stick bow and cedar shafts.
  20. OK you guys, let me say this. I am a disabled hunter. If this bill allows me to get out and hunt during the warmer weather of the regular archery season with my crossbow, then I am all for it. As far as me taking advantage of the situation by using a crossbow, or infringing on "your woods" then I feel that you are totally missing the point. Point in question is: Allowing disabled or handicapped hunters to gain access to this renewable resource that we have in this great state. As far as me (or any other hunter with a crossbow) having an advantage, I do not understand what advantage you are assuming we will have. Please rationally explain this to me. The statements that are being made about this being a gun, are just plain BS ! A crossbow is nothing more than a compound bow, with a devise to hold the string in the drawn position, and a release (trigger) and safety. That is in a horizontal position. It will NOT propel a projectile any further, any faster, or more accurately, then any other compound bow on the market. And if ANYONE that uses a crossbow, is willing to shoot at game at a distance of more than 40 yards, then in my opinion that person is an Idiot !
  21. Maybe this is what they are afraid of: I hunt Ohio with my crossbow, and it is VERY rarely if ever, that I see ANY other hunters while I am afield !
  22. If this is in fact the case, why then are crossbow's LEGAL in ALL states Except for Oregon ?
  23. We fished both Wilson and Olcott yesterday. Wilson was very slow, we got 1 pumpkin seed about 3-4 inches long, a couple others were having the same luck. We packed up and moved to Olcott, same story there. Did manage to hook up with 1 trout under the ice, that was fun while it lasted, then the ice got the best of the line and the fish was gone.
  24. Is everyone here as rude as you two pro-crossbow guys? You didn't ask me if or why I was "deadset" against crossbows. You asked a myriad of inapplicable questions that have nothing to do with crossbows. Crossbows have always been illegal in NY, and considered inappropriate for bow season. Now they are allowed for gun season....but it is crystal clear that they have been intentionally kept as distinct and different than vertical bows. As well they should. So what makes the crossbow so different from a compound with this "drawlock" device ? As far as I can tell, one is vertical and one is horizontal. Or is it the fact that one has a stock and my be placed against the shoulder to aim and fire ?
