growalot
lost the entire hemp /bean food plots....I was getting some growth and then they came in and cherry picked all of the hemp ..over night started on the sunflowers nipped off the sorghum and today most of the beans are gone...that's in both the upper and lower plots....I have planted areas half the size in regular soybeans and never had this happen....they totally ignored the Milorganite smell...never allowed the hemp to grow higher than 6in. ....I know if we had some rain the plots would have grown fast enough to have a chance but still they walked past soybeans to eat the hemp...did leave the kanaf pretty much alone but only had 1 oz of the seed mixed in.. So that was my experiment this year and lost the bet...weather...under seed hemp and sunflowers compared to usage....what I'm going to try is a spray down of upper field and then another planting of the rest of hemp and bean seed mixed with turnips...the lower fiel I may drag later and throw down turnip and wheat seed.....now I've lost all road cover so I'm hesitant about that...and don't think a corn planting right now would grow tall enough to help.....even if we were to get rain...which is not looking good Oh walked over to close garden gate by the upper plot...Angel and I kicked out 4 different rabbits from the road to the gate...time to do some fall hunting...small game Edited July 5, 2012 by growalot
SplitG2
do you have a camera on the plot? Just curious if it was deer, rabbit or groundhogs etc...?
growalot
On the upper plot so far deer... squirrel...and ground hogs....didn't catch the rabbits on plot but the entire area is surrounded with naturally occurring wht clover ...The lower plot has been open to too much human activity for me to feel secure enough to put up a cam....I have strung the fence yet and the loggers left last week...the 4th has had a lot of ppl cruising the area.... landtracdeerhunter
You have some hungry deer. That always happen to me every year plant soybeans. Three acres too. In a few nights, they chomp them to stems.Good protein. Never knew they like hemp. Well look at it this way, think of the antler growth. growalot
must be....I've planted many many things over the years and never had the deer take them out like this....I'm thinking that next year I'll go with corn as the road block in half the lower plot and double seed the hemp in as a single not mixed planting along side...then pray like mad for rain!!!...I'll also have a bigger area to plant so I can try it there as well....I will get a greater success from it one way or another.... erussell
It was either the deer or some really dissapointed pot heads.
