noodle one
Is anyone else waiting for the steelhead runs to start. I am not into salmon fishing ,but steelheading is my thing. I know the salmon river is low , but we should be getting rain soon and cooler weather and hopefully the salmon will start moving with the steelhead on there tails. Tight lines and good fishing to all.
rob1114
I agree, I would much rather be fishing for steelies than salmon but after the rain yesterday I couldn't resist hitting the salmon river and seeing what was around. Good bit of salmon pushing into the river, but only managed to land one. Won't be too much longer until the steelies start pushing into the river and creeks
erussell
Big browns should be right in there to gobbling up the eggs.
HuntOrBeHunted
Nice fish rob, I know they took the buoy's out near the pier so the fish start start running harder as soon as we get some more rain.
wdswtr
Ahh the Salmon river. I actually live on it. Salmon run is not all that great at this point. First small run we had alot of the salmon died from lack of oxygen once they hit the river towards Pulaski. Had a great rain yesterday so should help out a bit. I salmon fish in waits of opening bow and then Im done. Steelhead is definately the best time on the river. Especially after New Years in the heart of the winter when the fair weather guys all go home. We have had banner steelhead runs for atleast 5 years in a row. Unreal fishing since the 1 fish rule was put in place. Just check the regulations as they seem to change a bit every year.

wdswtr
There is some decent pockets of Salmon in now. Just a matter of finding them. Raining good here all day so should bring more in. Definaltely need rain to get the gates open a bit and let some water release.

I take it the water is really low right now? Sucks for the fish to be dieing off so early. I know there looking really good at the mouth of the lake. Not so cool picking up all the beer cans, Mcdonalds wrappers and all the other garbage that gets thrown out the windows that lands on the lawn and only appears during the salmon season. Really bums me out, and then filling a garbage bag full of crap along the banks everytime I go fishing too. Yes river has been low all summer. Its running a bit more respectable at the moment. Long gone are the days of good flow during the fall due to Kyak and rafting water releases during the summer. They manage to pratically drain the Upper reservior every summer. Really killed the rainbow trout population from lack of oxygen and warmer water temps up there. My favorite past time was always fishing the east branch above redfield for some real nice rainbows. Havent caught or seen one in 5 years now. Its a shame and just for day trips where these Kyakers dont even stay overnight or spend money up here. wdswtr
Well here is an update and some personal opinions. River is low, reservor is in sad shape, no rain no water. Temps are high. Salmon are in the river pretty heavy from Pulaski down, with schools starting to hit mid river and upper sections. Fish are stressed, counted 12 salmon floating dead in a about half an hour. Fish are dying from what I can tell from lack of oxygen. There is almost no pressure above pulaski as there are few fishermen up there. Hate to say this but they need to shut the river down or there will be a big loss in spawning fish that make it to the hatchery. Maybe this will wake some people up and stop the kayak water releases all summer long and hold water back for the multi million dollar revenue these fish bring to our local economy.
Salmon_Run
Sad, but too true..........no water will produce a large die off of Kings attempting to race upstream...the fish will be stressed as soon as they enter the warm water...
