Felonious_Monk
I own some land down south, and the family and I usually head down there once a year to do some camping, and do some shooting/hunting. Ferals are unprotected down there as well, and you can take them at any time, in any number, with any implement of your choosing. I've been trying to follow their expansion into NY as well, especially as NY has similar rules, requiring only a small game license, and the following of other regs as per the DEC. In NC, I have the advantage of the only regs being common sense, since it's my own property. The question, after my long winded intro, is if anyone on the board partakes in Hog Hunting here in NY. If so, where have you seen them/taken them/heard of their activity? DEC has them as active in Onandaga, Cortland, Tioga, and I think now Broome counties. This is quite a bit closer to home, and I'd love to have a third the travel for the hunt. Of course, like I said, we usually head down and camp as a family, but if I could get some wild bacon 4 hours, instead of 15 hours away, it'd be great. So, anyone have any info they'd like to pass along, or success stories to share? Thanks in Advance, F_Monk
SteveB
I live and hunt near the Cortland border in Cayugas cty. Know of probably 35 to 40 people who have killed one in the last several years. Everyone kill was a target of opportunity that presented itself when the hunter was hunting something else. Not one I have heard of has been taken by someone entering the field to hunt a hog that day, In other words, there a few around but pretty much impossible to successfully target. agross
As sad as it is to say with the way those things breed the population is gonna grow quicker than we would all like. Although i think that New York's cold winters (well not last year) will help slow the population a little. May decrease the number of litters a mother has per year. However, i would like to see one and get a shot but im not holding out or keeping my fingers crossed. I have been hunting every year since i was 16 (42 now) and have only seen 1 coyote in the woods while on stand, 1 red fox, 1 grey fox, zero bear and zero bobcats and they are a lot more prevalent than the hogs. (and im talking dawn to dusk sits every time out)
Felonious_Monk
Wow. Okay, thanks for the scouting reports guys. I'd love to get one up here, because 650 miles is a haul and once a year just ain't enough.

Doc
Gotta call in the Hog hunters. He's been "huntin' hogs since Mobey Dick was a sardine". He'll find them.
