Jennifer
Many years ago I was fall turkey hunting in about 2-3' of snow with my dad. We came across some hot scratchings, and we played track and attack. I was smaller and got to be the 'hound' on the scratchings, while dad flanked me about 30 yards out in case we stumbled into them and one of us needed to break or jump shoot one. Those turkeys went into the thickest, nastiest snarl of treetops on a steep sidehill, full of berry brush and thorns. Dad and I met up and started to follow them when suddenly the woods exploded with turkeys in front of us! In order to safely swing on one, I had to point my barrel up and pivot my upper body-- well wouldn't you know it but I was standing on a bunch of downed branches and when I twisted, my feet went out from under me and the next thing I knew I was face down in the snow! I wear glasses and it was all packed in them and down my coat and just not a good time. By the time I got up and could see it was all over. My dad knocked down a bird, and then asked, "Jen! Why didn't you shoot?!" When he looked over and saw me making a snow angel, he looked even more incredulous: "What are you doing down there?" We tried to set up to call the broken flock back in, but I was so soaked that we had to head home within a few hours because I was freezing. Its now between cam and cable, well the cable is off the cam ! No morning hunt for me I sat in truck,at 8:30 was at near by bow shop, $5 and 2 minutes good to go. Guns&ReligionCop
My cellphone has taken the 20 foot plunge a bunch of times but my most recent blunder was wednesday during the blizzard. Sitting there watching the snow pile up on my coveralls soaking through and getting my knees and cold and wet wondering why I pulled out a my waterproof jacket and coveralls but ended up putting on my regular ones
accman
I hunt with the same old gun I bought in 68, a mannlicher, and I usually walk up to my stand at 5:00 am, all the way up that hill, but this morning I got a ride up on my friends quad. Walked in the rest of the way, climbed up in the stand, got ready, opened all the windows, go to load the gun, and there's no bolt in the gun. Somehow, a tiny screw which keeps the bolt in place must have been shaken loose, and the bolt must have fallen out with all the bouncing around. Sheer panic sets in. I take out the flashlight and retrace my steps to the path, no bolt. Head down the mountain, looking for anything shiny. "Please let it be around here somewhere". After a few novinas, I get near the bottom of the hill, and there it was on the side of the path. No screw, but at least I found the bolt. (my precioussss!!!) Hunted with the damn thing that way for 1 or 2 years after that, stubborn idiot that I am, and finally brought it to a gunsmith, who fixed it right up. I'd better stop cause I've done so many stupid things in my life, I could write a book. Good luck on Saturday.
joe12
This past Saturday I was sitting in a stand for the afternoon post. I see a bruiser come walking down the hill angling away from me towards my neighbor's yard. I try some grunt calls and some doe bleeps but no reaction and he kept walking in the opposite direction (probably about 200 yards away at that point). I also can see two really small does walking in his direction so I figure that he will follow them and have no reason to come back in my direction. My wife had made dinner plans with friends that night so I would be in big trouble if I wasn't home by 6. With only about 10 minutes left of legal shooting time left I start packing my stuff up, taking my arrow off my bow, etc. Just as I had my arrow in one hand and my quiver in the other hand, my neighbor starts up a chainsaw. The two does come jetting right at me and before I could react they are standing 5 feet from my stand. I look behind them and here comes the bruiser right on their heels. Given how close they were I couldnt move to put down my quiver and nock an arrow, so I had to sit still as the bruiser walks past 3 of my shooting lanes at 22 yards. Lesson learned - it's never over until legally over.
screamon demon
A few years back I put a lot of time scouting for spring turkey. I was so over prepared for the opener it all went too smooth. When I got to the woods and opened my gun case I had a nice AK 22 staring at me and no shot gun
