Sogaard
I'm thinking about purchasing one in .223 and looking for anyone with first-hand knowledge.
WNYBuckHunter
I dont have one of those specifically, but you can build a better AR for less if you shop around for parts. The R15 is just a standard AR with a low rise gas block, medium profile barrel and free float hand guard. I have looked at them and they are nice, but the camo finish leaves something to be desired/ Its pretty sloppy. If you dont want to build, take a look at the DMPS or Rock River rifles, they are alot nicer IMO. My buddy just picked up a DPMS sweet 16 for coyote hunting, and let me tell you, that thing is a sweeeeeeet shooter, though you dont really need the bull barrel. If you are looking for a great varmint rifle, the DPMS Prairie Panther or Lite Hunter models are darn near perfect. Nice and light, accurate out to 300 yards or more, with a 2 stage match trigger and Carbon fiber free float hand guard already installed for just a little more than your standard R15. http://dpmsinc.com/PRAIRIE-PANTHER_ep_147-1.html
Sogaard
Thanks for the info, I'll check it out. One thing that is limiting me is I'm trying to purchase the gun at Cabelas (due to the fact I cashed out my credit card points for gift certificates, lol). Mr VJP
The Remington R-15 is a clone of an AR, and a poor one at that. Colt, DPMS or Bushmaster is the way to go, in that order. But you may want to get something other than an AR, since Cuomo is going to take it from you soon anyway.
verminater71
I have several do it yourself AR's however my brother just bought a DPMS prairie panther, and it is a beast, light shoots great I was impressed
Sogaard
Honestly, I wish I felt comfortable enough to build my own, but as this will be the first time I will have/own/use an semi-auto, I would rather purchase a complete firearm. I'm also really trying hard to stay away from the "black gun" look, just out of personal preference, not judging anyone who like it. I'm definitely going to check out the DPMS line of .223s. Thank you all for the advice.
WNYBuckHunter
Believe me when I say its simple. I was intimidated about doing it too, but if you can assemble a piece of furniture from Ikea, you can build one. It took me less than 1/2 hour to do my lower. There are a couple of tricks they dont mention in the vid, but if you decide to do it, let me know and I can help you with them.
WNYBuckHunter
BTW, The company I got my stripped lower from has a new batch coming in a couple of months. You can pre order one for $125, and they are very nice pieces. www.allstartactical.com
Geno C
WNY is there a benefit to building your own? do you save any money?
WNYBuckHunter
Yes, you save money, plus you become intimately knowledgeable about the rifle, and its a ton of fun.
jeffd7766
Just wanted to give you a heads up.....remington and dpms are now the same company...the r-15 is the same gun as a dpms....just as their r-25 is a lighter version of the lr-308.. i agree building one can be cheaper....but right now.....take what you can get....crappy uppers are going for more than what i paid for my complete guns. i actually held the r-15 today with a quad rail...all the previous ones i have seen/held have had the aluminum free float style. and it was a pretty solid feeling gun. I didnt bother asking a price because im sure they are jacked way up right now.

Its not like anyone can just buy parts and build one correct?
waterweasle
the only part that is registered is the lower ( where all the trigger, safety ect mechanics are), thats it, the rest you can buy over the internet.....this is the part I'm talking about( without the tan plastic grip on the magwell) then you just have to make sure it stands up to NY assault weapons laws ei: NO COLLAPSIBLE stocks( you can have one that WAS adjustable) but its gotta be pinned so it cant move Edited January 3, 2013 by waterweasle
waterweasle
they certainly dont have to be black sogaard
WNYBuckHunter
Geno, Ill shoot you a PM with a link and copy of the NY AWB laws. A good place to start finding parts is through AR15.com, so get an account started over there. NYFirearms.com is another great place to source parts and local suppliers. WNYBuckHunter
BTW, the lower isnt registered like a handgun, but you do have to go through an FFL to ship one, etc. Oh, and if you buy a lower thats manufactured before the AWB was put in place (called Preban), you can put whatever goodies on it you want, including collapsible stocks, etc. Youll pay through the nose for one though, especially right now. Ive been seeing preban rifles go for $3k and up lately.

WNYBuckHunter
The one I built last year (2012) cost me @ $700, and it has some nice stuff on it. Its not exactly a hunting setup, but I will be using it for predators this year.
