To set the stage, I'm not pro nor anti Xbow! Simply interested in how the Xbow legislation is progressing. Recieved this eMail 3/3/13 from NYCC, of which I'm not a member. Contents of eMail:

Crossbow Bill Update

We have received numerous emails inquiring about the status of Crossbow Legislation in Albany. Assemblyman Sean Ryan and Senator Pat Gallivan reintroduced their 2012 bills in early January and we reported them as A283 and S1699.

Unfortunately, both of these bills have technical problems and will either need amending or must be started over as a new bill. The problem stems from the expired temporary inclusion for crossbows during firearms and late muzzleloader seasons that sunsetted on December 31, 2012. Once this provision expired the language was stricken from the law as if it never existed. The resubmitted bills include this language, which no longer exists in the environmental conservation law.

There continues to be considerable discussion surrounding the crossbow issue and we will likely see the present bills amended or new bills introduced. Economic impact data is also being compiled to support the use of crossbows, including their ability to increase tourism and provide revenue to the State.

As this legislative session progresses, and the present bills are either amended or replaced, we will continue to keep you informed. Most likely this will not happen until after the budget is passed which is required to be put in place by April 1st. The budget always takes center stage until its passage, but then again, in Albany anything can happen. Stay tuned.
