EspressoBuzz
Hello All! My cousin and I are looking to go on our first spring turkey hunt. I live in Suffolk he lives on Staten Island. Since Suffolk has no spring season for old farts we have decided its going to have to be one of these areas. Sterling Forest State Park Stewart State Park Any of the M.U.A.s along the Taconic Parkway specifically Taconic Hereford, Lafayetteville or Roeliff Jansen (I am at least familiar with these three being an avid hiker.) So if anyone has any information, suggestions or cautions please let me know. If you'd like a hunting partner to help scout any of these areas I'd like to help out. I'm not asking anyone to give up their "favorite fishin hole" Just a little help avoiding revenuers, meth labs and corn stills! Thanks! G-Man
Why have you decided on state land? I travel from buffalo area to delaware county and have numerous places to hunt turkey, all private land and all just from knocking on doors. Now is the time to check fields and knock on doors. You'ld be surprised how many allow turkey hunting, (although they have deer hunting leased out or keep it for their family and friends) farmers are busy in spring and many don't seem to hunt birds in that area. The most they can do is tell you no.
TPhunter
Best advise ever is to NOT DO IT!!!...It is the most addictive thing you will ever do...Turkeys have been known to make a grown man cry (it was not a proud moment) and it can become down right personal...They ain't as dumb as they look! But if you insist on doing this, talk to some of the local folks and find out where the turkeys "Are" during the spring, seeing them in a field now doesn't mean they will be there come May...Read as much as you can on the subject, ask plenty of questions and hang on cause it's going to be a bumpy ride. EspressoBuzz
I agree I'm going to have to work on getting permission on private land but in case the answer is no I'd like to have some sort of back up. ...and speaking of spring gobblers in Suffolk this photo was sent to me by a friend who went out east to wainscot to work today. as cousin Vinny would say " youse gots a turkey season for youts only?"
