Rabbit

Took chester out finally! He kicked up a rabbit and didn't know it and it ran towards me, i shot and i missed.

Still exciting and wish i could call into work to take him out again

What kind of dog is Chester? A friend of mine had a dashound that ran rabbits better then his beagles. They bought it for a house dog and ended up being his number 1 hound.

He is a beagle,2 yrs old and we are learning from each other. I have never hunted rabbit.

There are 2 people on this sight that have different dogs for rabbit.

I should also say i did not want a puppy or to hunt rabbit. I asked for rabbit hutches to raise meat rabbits. husband didn't want to build, guess he thought it was easier to get me a dog. I have enjoyed taking him out. I think i need to be more patient when it comes to hunting with him, maybe i have moved on to fast.

Just be patient with him and get him out as much as you can, the more they get out in the feild and get to run rabbits the better he'll get. Once he gets broken in you'll have a lot of fun with him plus put some rabbits on the table along with a few grouse. How tall will he get to be? I like the 12" beagles.

they use to say they can not learn if they are on the wire. so keep taking him out and see if you can find a beagle club that has a place to train your dog. I use to take my hounds out several time a week , and sometimes even with the wife. She got so she liked to hear the dogs running at the club.

Does Chester play "Fetch"? If he does, get some rabbit training scent (gundogsupply.com) and soak an old tennis or softball...then play fetch in the dark: Roll the ball across your lawn and make Chester use his nose to find it. Worked for me!

Sorry crappy. He is at least 15". He does play fetch. I was taking him a lot before hunting and then i have had some issues here and haven't taken him so much. I am going to get back in the habit. There is a club 10 min from here but never thought about joining.
