Is anyone else having difficulty finding an open course?

I've been trying to sign my son and his friend up for a sportsman's education course since the beginning of July. Every course that I've found that fits our schedule gets filled by the time I go and try to register them.

I called the one in Garden City at GC Tactical in the beginning of June for the July and the August courses but both were filled. I went to the Uniondale range today after seeing the 9/14-15 weekend course that was posted on Monday and I found out that it was filled the same day it was posted. Both are still showing as open but If they fill up aren't they supposed to remove it from the list? I've never experienced this before. There must be a huge infusion of new hunters that will be filling the woods this coming season.

I was hoping to get them in before 10/1 so I can take them hunting opening weekend for turkey but it seems as the only weekend course available in my area is in Bayville for which I signed them, up but that's not until the end of October. I would consider some courses in Suffolk but they are in Mid september and during the week and late at night interfering with school sports and such.

I guess the boys will have to wait until the end of October.

go on d.e.c web site just signed my nephew in bayville in oct last weekend . d.e.c. has a list of clASSES ALOT ON THE ISLAND . THERE IS ONE IN HUNTINGTON THAT HAS A LOT OF CLASSES AND THERE'S GOT TO BE EARLY CLASSES. KEEP CHECKING ESPEICALLLY LATE THERE ARE ALWAYS NO SHOWS , THERE ARE CLASSES IN THE CITY[ QUEENS & BKLYN ] IF YOU DONT MIND TRAVELING

I took my course out at victory archers in staten island, bit of a drive for me but well worth it.

 

they were packed but I know they had no shows. maybe try calling the day before a class and asking if you can come and sit in and see if there are any no shows.

I took my course in LI. It was quite a hike for me, but that's how bad I wanted it. Drove close to 2 hours and ended up sleeping in the car overnight in freezing temps. The instructors still remember me as the guy that slept in the car.

Hope you get them in a course sooner than later.

Couple weekend courses earlier than that in Columbia I have seen fliers for......one in Livingston right there; another over in the new Hillsdale library; that was end of Sept IIRC.

Just looked on the DEC site.....That Kalicoontie R&G club is early Oct.....Thats a 22lr shooting club thats not too far from where I think your place is, they do some kids shoots there.

Good luck...took one guys wife 3 years to get into a class....personally I would have thought he'd make sure she was  at least put on a waiting list...who knows

Plenty of options in westchester and putnam counties.
