Stewart State Forest

I thought I'd start a topic about this land. Today started the endless calling to make a reservation for the opening of rifle season. Anyone call and get through? Also this post could be about if we saw anything on our visits.

If you are referring to Stewart In Windsor, its not called Stewart preserve.

  • 2 weeks later...

I didn't a reservation either, so went in late morning (which was good for since I was in the office until 11 PM)

Don't park at Lorraine Road - it is not P6.

DEC officer was nice about it, but did get a ticket for illegal parking.

At least he didn't write one for trespassing, which he could have done both for me and my son.

Have to send it in to find out the cost of the fine.

Another officer mentioned another piece of state forest where there are some active buck scrapes to take a crack at.

TT... I drove down 747 (Drury) today and didn't see a car in any one of the spots there.  It's good in there once you get up on that ridge.

I am off next week, so maybe I will get my NY deer finally.

Only saw 1 deer while turkey hunting - none while archery hunting.

Saw several trucks with deer on the back on Sunday from the morning hunt and they hunted the rest of the day too.

Guessing that they were hunting to fill their hunting partner's tag.

I've hiked Drury a few times, never noticed much sign or seen a deer.

This deer was taken at spot 4 on Drury (747) last year.  I've hunted Stewart for 35 years. It does seem to have been thinned out a lot with all the deer getting pushed.  Deer search found the buck and I know the hunter personally.

Wow...  that's cool and I think it is 6.  I live off of Rt 207 in Rock Tavern.  Sorry to see they closed the 2 spot up near Rt 84.

Yeah unfortunately it wasn't me but the hunter was happy.  It was a far back hit with the bow and deer search had to shoot it (which they are allowed to do by the DEC on wounded deer).  I've took some big deer here in 3M.  You have them on the other side of the Hudson too.
