Savage Lever 99 Safe

I have a model 99 savage lever action. I bought it new in late 60's. The safe on it has lost all tension. It can back off with the swipe of a twig or any little thing.Needless to say it is scary even though I check if constantly. Has anyone else run into this. I am not a gunsmith but it may need to go to one.This is the safe on the lever, not on top like some older models.

I have a 99E carbine with the safety on the lever.  I have to KNOW I wanna take it off safe.  I agree with you - a trip to a smith is in order.

I have seen several 99's with that same problem. The side safety gets worn and eventually just flops back and forth. I'd say get it to a gunsmith.
