Making buckskins

  I want to make buckskins and I don't have anyway to get hardwood ash to make a lye solution.  What product can I buy in a store that will do the same thing and not ruin the hide?

I used KOH(potassium hydroxide) as recommended from the deerskin into buckskin book by Matt Richards---great reference and my hides turned our pretty good for a first time.

have a campfire use hardwood. roast some marshmellows .. all the ash you need
