Dom
Just wondering what your thaughts are?If you come apon a deer that was not shot by yourself and you go back a few day's later or weeks later do you take off the antlers or leave for shooter to come back to get them.I have had some that I wasnt able to find even with hours/day's of tracking.Do you wait untill season is over or do you cut them off? PREDATE
Well if you don't, someone else will. I personally am not interested in another persons kill, but if it's been at least a week I might commandeer a new set of rattlers to give away (I have enough). If they lay too long the mice will get em, which brings up another topic. Like if I can't appreciate them, why not let another critter benefit from gnawing on em. I'm a hunter yes, but I absolutely hate seeing ANY animal suffer. Hell I don't even like when my fiance pours salt on the 4-5 inch leopard slugs that live under our deck! lol Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk
VT Outfitter
In the areas that I manage with my outfitting company, I have had a few calls to help look for deer that have crossed into one of my properties. Being that I have been in my area hunting and raising a family, I have made many friends and I know just about everyone in town and in the surrounding towns. So if someone had shot a deer close to my properties I would probably hear about it if they couldn't find it. They would call me or I would hear about it at the local general store in town around the coffee pot. I guess if I found a downed deer, and I couldn't find the hunter that had shot it in time to save the meat, and it was rotten I would probably tie the head off to a tree with a cable or chain. Then try to find the person that wanted to have that buck and reunite them. A question does arrive for me though. If someone had shot a good buck, and you have lived in your area for long enough to know most of the hunters, it would be strange to not hear a story about "the one that got away" at some point down the road. Any respected hunter would expend all legal means of assets to recover a shot deer. That being said, there is a chance that the buck was not harvested legally (ie. shot from the road, shot on posted property, shot after dark, ect...), hence the lack of effort to recover him. PREDATE
Nothing wrong with that Dom if you've allowed ample time for the shooter to recover their prize. Can I ask what types of folks usually buy racks. Artsy people, non hunters or do you place an ad on craigslist? I like green paper Jacksons too! G-Man
had a friend find a big 8pt on a drive during muzzleloader, went back with him cut the head off and called the neighbors to see if they lost a nice buck against what sone guys i was hunting with said i should do(i have no interest in somone elses kill).. turned out to have been shot 2 weeks earlier by his mother in law(his neighbor). and they lost it (blood trail) maybe 150 yards from where it was found..(was a swamp) gave the head to her and a 10x12 pic from one of my trail cams. was like an early christmas for her. and it always helps to keep up neighborly relations!
