airedale
With the amount of shooting I like to do I have become a huge fan of the newer modern air guns, the good ones can produce gilt edge accuracy, and enough power to hunt with all for a reasonable price per shot compared to even low end bulk 22 ammo. Today I upped my game and put together a Weihrauch 25 cal gas piston rifle for mostly small game. German made and it reeks quality, everything about it is first rate, fit and finish along with a great trigger, just outstanding. The one drawback with many of the better air rifles is they are heavy and this one weighs almost 9 lbs. That was a big determining factor on my scope selection, I got a couple of 4x12s and a 6.5x20 sitting around but I feel I really do not need that much magnification on a 50 yard hunting-plinking gun along with putting the weight in the 11 lb range. So for now at least I mounted one of my favorite scopes on the Weihrauch, a 2.5X lightweight Leupold, I have several of these scopes mounted on Deer rifles and I love them. Took it out to the range for a quick sight in and at thirty yards I made several 5 cent coin size ragged one hole groups, I was thrilled and I do not think I would have shot any better with the 6.5X20 mounted. I have a big selection of various pellets to try so hopefully when I get some time I will really put this rifle through it's paces and have more to report. bugsNbows
Attractive and accurate… that is what good rifles are supposed to be. Congrats on this winner.
airedale
Hit the range this morning with both the Weihrauch and the Benjamin Marauder both are 25 cal, the Benjamin is a PCP charged rifle. When the dust was settled the Benjamin proved to be the hands down winner as far as performance goes. The Garmin chrono showed It's velocity topped the Weihrauch's by over 200 FPS and it also shot the tightest groups. That being said it does carry some significant disadvantages, being a PCP gun it had to be either pumped up by hand which is a nightmare or pumped up using a compressor which makes things much easier, good for a dozen full powered shots, it is also magazine fed. The Weihrauch just has to have the barrel broke down and cocked, loaded singly, it will build your muscles for sure. The Weihrauch prefers a heavy pellet, The Benjamin will shoot several weights half way decent. They are different but I like them both and they are fun to shoot at a reasonable price per shot. airedale
Getting back to the Weihrauch, the little 2 1/2 X Leupold is a great scope that can take the double jolt of the gas piston but it's parallax setting is in the 150 yd range. I can see the crosshair wanting to wander at short air gun ranges. I have to concentrate and make sure I have to hold on my target exactly the same every shot. There is a way to adjust the parallax down to short ranges but I think I am going to end up putting this scope on my TC inline black powder rifle so I will leave it as it is. I have a dedicated air rifle scope coming with adjustable parallax and I believe the Weihrauch's groups will tighten up a bit and be on par with the Benjamin. airedale
When it comes to air guns I am an admitted neophyte with plenty to learn especially when it comes to scoping the springer-gas piston type, but I am learning fast! So I decided to get a dedicated air rifle scope for my new Weihrauch, something where the parallax could be adjusted to the closer ranges air rifle are practically used at. Now I know that the back and forth shock of these types of air rifles are tough on scopes so I got on Amazon and started looking at dedicated air rifle scopes and the reviews form shooters that bought them. The first thing that became apparent to me was most were selling for under $100 and well under $100. Should have been a red flag as the old saying goes "you get what you pay for"! Instead I went along with the reviews giving these cheap scopes stellar performance. I should have known better but I bought a $80 air rifle scope that many shooters raved about saving myself a few bucks. Mounted the scope on the rifle and hit the range with four different types of pellets, I did not get too far into that shooting session before the elevation adjustment stopped working in both directions!!!. Soooo, took the piece of junk off and contacted Amazon for a return and refund which went through without a hitch. Let me say I was pissed off but at myself more than the piece of crap scope! So more research was done and this time I went to some air gun sites and asked around, a moderately priced Hawke scope kept getting recommended so I put in the order and that one should be here tomorrow, if this one craps out I will shoot the rifle with open sights! Live and Learn!! Al Edited August 11 by airedale
