First ever turkey hunt.....

Well I misjudged the sunrise. Thought I could snag an extra 20 minutes of sleep and ending up walking in a little lighter than planned. Still not full sunrise.. But I could definitely see better than I wanted to.

Someone made it out ahead of me. I expected it. And at least it was one truck and not 5.

I hit the first area where I've previously seen birds. Scanning the trees as I went... When I got almost tot he end of the first field I saw a single bird roosted solo. (Jake?)

I then heard the other guy calling on the other side of the field. I had expected the guy there before me to have gone in further. Oh well. I went to the next field... Setup. And within 40 minutes the sun was fully up over the ridge. I did a little calling.... But mostly just sat for an hour or so....

I saw the other guy leave at one point.

I sat a bit and enjoyed the morning. And what a beautiful morning it was.

I couldn't stay till 12 due to engagements so I decided to walk the full length of the property to see if I could catch some birds out to feed in one of the other fields. No such luck.

This makes 2 instances of seeing birds in the first field... this time a single one roosted.

Should I hit this same field tomorrow even though someone else was sitting it today?

Also wanted some opinions on the other options there....

1) big standard field post-2523-14305754927964_thumb.jpg

2) small field... Back to a river.. Down corn fields directly across the river... Smaller field with scrub trees spaced out. post-2523-14305755910541_thumb.jpg

Sounds like you had a good morning even if you didn't connect with a turkey.

Given the choices you have,I would choose #3. The two fields separated by a row of scrub trees. I'd find a spot to set up on the lower end in the scrub where you can watch both fields. They will most likely come into those fields from the lower end and move higher to find hens and strut their stuff.

My personal rule is to give another hunter, already set up before me,plenty of room. Hopefully the courtesy will be returned to you if you are set up first. But that's sadly not always the case on public land.

And yes,they are turkey feathers.

Don't get too caught up in the fields unless you think the birds are roosting right on the edges. Tuck into the open hardwoods close to the fields. If there are hardwood ridges near the fields,,,,,better yet.
