beachpeaz
Question for the experts, at this point of the year how much more growth can we expect from a buck? I have a real wide 8 point showing up in my field but he's not very tall. I'd say he's 20" inside but at this point his G2's are only about 8". Just curious what I should expect to see in another month. Thanks. You're going to get a bunch of different answers here I think, but the truth is that some deer are grow'rs and some are show'rs. Some deer pack on a lot of inches right up front and do very little growing the second half of summer. Some deer grow consistently all summer. I am not sure if that is more to do with genetics or food source or both. So, the non-answer to your question is, unless you have history with that buck to see what he did last year, there is no way to tell if he will grow any more than what he has.
beachpeaz
For sure, he'd be an a genuine monster in another year or two. Unfortunately, there's not much deer management in these parts so he'll have to get there on his own. It's crappy that he lost his character though with those kickers off his brows missing. As vague as that reply may sound, I don't think you could have worded it more accurately. Some of the bigger/better/badder bucks around here seem to take off quick, before reaching a plateau, and then gradually finishing off throughout the summer into early August filling in the final touches. The younger bucks here seem to start slow, then spike in growth so fast that growth has maxed by mid July, and what you see is what you get.(still under velvet of course)
WNY Bowhunter
It's crappy that he lost his character though with those kickers off his brows missing. Had a few more crappy pics from today's card pulls... I really wish that he would have stayed a symmetrical 5x5, but I can hardly say that I'm dissappointed in his growth this year. He is either tied for or a close second for the best 3 year old that I've ever gotten pics of. Based on his bulby tines, there is still some growing left in his G3/G4 and beams.
