Like others have mentioned, when at the range, I use ear protection always. But in the woods with either shotgun or rifle, and it usually being only one shot, no. BUT!!! If using a handgun

I highly would suggest to use ear protection at all times.

Peltor Tactical 100 earmuffs.  I grew up hunting in Sweden, where everyone under the age of 50 has been wearing earmuffs since they were kids.  Just the natural thing to do.  At the range, I often put earplugs in and then put on the muffs.  I raced cars in the past and damaged my hearing doing that, so very sensitive to protecting what I have left.

I lost many deer because I didn't want to take the shot without my ear protection on. It's my personal choice, I need to save what's left of my hearing. I don't go to loud restaurants anymore, because I can't have a conversation.

Also, I lost deer because I smacked the plastic gun stock against the ear protection, and the deer heard it, and took off. Happened twice so far. So there is a risk of wearing ear protection too.
