Opening morning 2015

What a perfect morning...I bundled up well for the temp dropped to 30 before I left...grabbed buck bomb and drag rag ...Decided to hit the road for most of walk in and dropped the rag as I entered the land again...I lucked out and did not move even one deer the whole walk in...decided to hedge my bet and take a middle stand between a blind and another stand to my west....this with a ESE light breeze...I no sooner got set I heard a buck chasing doe behind me..WOW woods are so crunchy...trails were so quiet...then I heard the deer moving toward me out infront...So I knew the surrounding guys were headed to there stands...I could barely see a doe and fawns cross my trail and hit a plot about 60 yards away...then a fox came in...... what a racket 7 squirrel piled out of a tree 30 yrds away and head to the ground then they scattered in all directions.....reminded me of clowns falling out of a clown car..

So  first shots started at 6:35 then in earnest around me at 6:45...I catch a blob in the plot and try to glass it...half way from me to the blind...Squirrels had it looking back at me and binos fogged over from my breath...finally at 6:55 I can see it's the big 8...he walked right up to one leg of the blind tower and looked straight up...hung around for a minute or two broad side...then walked on up into our woods...I almost laughed out loud...legal is 7:09...Oh well...Then a 4pt walks right where I was hoping  the big boys would.....and hits  my hanging, hunter orange, scent drag I hung 10yrds infront of me...LOL he rubbed and rubbed and rubbed his face all over that thing..Then very slowly and timidly walked out into the plot and fed with 2 doe and 2 fawn...7:15 in come a group of hog doe just huge and they walk on the other side of the stand next to me...(I'm 150yrds between these)... not 10 mins later there is the 12pt...and OMG he has got to be the longest deer I have ever seen ..what does he do...stops 10 ft from that stand and hangs out...I am searching every where for the bleat can I had in my hand this morning..nada...it was sitting infront of the computer...put it down when I turned it off :umbrage: ...So I start grunting with my voice...he stops  but by this time I have caught the attention of the deer feeding on the other side of me...I shifted and then realized they were still there...not for long...no snorts but a fury of flags sprung up and they left...needless to say so did Mr 12..

I can only hope he and Mr 8pt are bedded up and show later...I am really hoping the shots heard before all this were bucks going down...I heard a shot coming out of my swamp...need to take care of that with one final blind build this coming year...

All said and done it was a GREAT opening morning sit.. I passed all the doe shots and the 4...had some funny sightings and no aggrivation ...But note to self...no hummus or tossed salads for dinner before opening day

Apparently the ppl around me were getting as much if not more!

You would think they figure this to be santuary from the amount of shots bordering me..The good thing about owning the midsection of a hill...they push them down in the morning and up in the afternoon. The lease guys sounded more like they were target shooting than hunting...

Good fences make good neighbors though...The guy that gave me sooooo many years of grief....never shot nor did I see him...he may have gone else where to hunt... now that  nearly all one side of the property is fenced...sorta makes it tough when you by 1acre as a" hunting camp" and can't illegally hunt the property next to you any more...lol ;) ...I suppose the blinds he can't see if I'm in or not...doesn't help either :victory:

First shots at 635 while my son and I watch 5 deer (I can't tell buck or doe cause to dark) walk all around us. We watch for a while then on to stand. Saw many heard even more shots and many before 710, had a great first am. Oh and farmer decides this am is a good time to thrash soybeans. Still a good day !!

Didn't hear a ton of shots. Heard one at 6:30 which isn't bad considering I've heard a bunch in almost pitch black in years prior. Heard about 10 shots by the time I left the woods at 9:15. I saw a spike dogging a doe and another small doe. The neighbor show the big 8pt with kicker we've been watching since August. Back at it tomorrow AM.
