Public land hunting

I have always had a place to go hunting on private land. Getting permission to hunt on someone's land is getting very difficult anymore in my area. I'm looking into taveling up north next season to hunt on public land. Does anyone have any tips on getting started. This will be new to me as I've always had permission for private land.

Where are you, & how far North are you planning on going? DEC has maps and info available about state land, on their website, or in print at regional offices.

I'm in Dutchess county 3F I would go anywhere from the schroon lake area up to tupper Saranac lake. I have checked out some maps and information on the dec website

Get a good quality compass, learn how to use it. Get topo maps from the specific area you want to hunt and learn to use the compass with the maps. The reason I say this in two separate sentences is because you can use a compass without a map, not wise, but you can do it. Take a compass reading from your vehicle.

Always tell at least three people the area you will be in.

I know of a few camps in the speculator area that are looking for members. If your planning on staying in a hotel it doesn't take long to make up the 300-500$ in dues for year round access. If interested let me know.

Lots of state land in dutchess. ..why not stay local....but the state land in dutchess does tend to hold more bears then deer
