Doc
I kind of laughed my butt off at the news that New Jersey was forced to open their bear season again. As any reasonable person could have predicted, with bear seasons closed there by the wacko, animal rights governor and the accompanying merry band of pinkos, the populations exploded, the nuisance calls about bears exploded, the damage done by bears exploded, the close encounter between residents and bears exploded. They just plain took the place over ...... lol. So next time anyone starts to give you grief about hunting, remember New Jersey's story. It was text-book! Setters4life
I believe in 1969 when the season first officially closed, there were no bears to be found in New Jersey. When pressure and public clamor for a hunt came, it was opened in 2003 for the first time since 1969. Negative sentiments flew about shortly afterwards and there was no season in 2004, but a season again in 2005. By then the activists had regrouped and pressure put on the Corzine administration and to Lisa Jackson (NJ's DEP head, and now the EPA head under the Obama administration) who closed it. Pro-hunter support aided Christie when he ran for Gov. and he intimated on the campaign trail he would approve a hunt if the study found there was no other alternative to curtail population growth. Coupled with the population growth is habitat loss every year in New Jersey. New Jersey has lost 40% of its wetlands and 35% of the Pine Barrens since presettlement times, and has 50% less farmland than in 1950. Now Christie needs to tackle NJ's $10.5 billion deficit. Fantail
I mean no offence to our NJ neigbors, but I sure am glad I don't live there.
Doc
Yes, as bad as NY is, NJ is living proof that things could be worse.... : Doc
Mr VJP
Currently living in NJ and spending weekends in NY, I fear NY is started to go the way of NJ when it comes to guns and hunting. Pistol permit laws are equally bad and the so called "assault weapons" laws are pretty much the same. I fear moving from NJ to upstate NY in the near future won't be far enough to be free. I'm seriously thinking of moving out west to Montana, Idaho or Oregon.
JGaruti3
Jersey sucks...my friend who lives there doesn't even bother hunting because its a nuiscance....so much more rules and regulations to deal with..

spltlim
The NJ bear season went off with much success...This was the first bear season in 10 years...591 bears were harvested during the 6 day season, several over the 600lb mark and also a couple over the 700lb mark
the blur
what percentage of the bear population was harvested ?
Mr VJP
Total population of NJ bears was estimated to be about 3500. Total bag over the 6 day season was 591. That means about 17% of the total population was harvested.
the blur
that's at least 20% with the unreported harvest.
Mr VJP
Authorities were killing about 100 nuisance bear every year prior to the hunt too. But the anti's weren't complaining about that. They only complain if hunters kill them.
the blur
on tax payer dollar
Mr VJP
Right. Taxpayers were paying for hundreds of bear to be handled or killed every year. By contrast hunters pay to be able to hunt them. For a cash strapped state on the verge of bankruptcy, allowing hunting is a better option, in the best interest of the people of the state. But then, NJ has never been known for doing anything that is in the best interest of the people of the state.
