Well, it happened. I harvested “the big one” (as per my youngest daughter ordered, and the one that me and my oldest daughter came across once). Day two of rifle season 2020 is one to remember. Coming onto this handsome buck who was strutting his stuff as the king of the hill was an an amazing experience. I walked from my spot towards a path several deer crossed, and there he came down a hill. He came down the hill like a king. I stopped in my tracks as my heart began to pump harder and faster. He had three doe right behind me, and one spotted me. I thought I was toast. Then another smaller buck pushed the three doe out and walked over to this big fella. The two bucks stayed in one spot over 40 minutes. I didn’t have a shot, and there were deer all over. Moving at this point was not an option. Sure my legs went numb after watching them hang out over 53 minutes without presenting a shot, but I got him. The two bucks finally made their way down the hill towards the opening for a shot but my rifle misfired. I had to pump it the get the next shell, but they spotted me in doing so. I had to rush the 75-85 yard shot without a scope. My body went into shock mode. Did I get him? To top this crazy morning off the shot was a clean shot, and he didn’t travel far. The two bucks were right behind the Y tree and on the other side of the pine. This was the opening I shot through. You are looking passed the leaves , passed the pine, over big grass, and they were on the other side of the field. It going to lie. I didn’t think I made a good shot in the heat of the moment. I was in shock when we found him. Let alone not far from the shot. The girls were supper excited. I’m supper thankful to have gotten this opportunity. Thank you buck. Yes. Sorry. Still learning the terminology. Nick, the gentleman who helped me, said that it will be fine for the minor basic mechanics as a start. The pulling back, and finding and anchor point. The locating a target, and releasing. He said that adjusting to the correct point of release should be quick when I’m ready to by a new bow. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

First time shooting ever at 20 yards. I did go for the middle once, and the top right twice. Shooting a Proline Zephyr XE-II Compound Bow that was handed down to me and restrung by the guys at B and B Archery in Middletown NY. The bow is just a tad too big, but I’d say that it’s close for my first time shooting a bow at 20 yards. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thank you. I’m all for learning the hard way. I can say that I am self taught in most everything that I consider a hobby. I just have a respect for the deer/bear, and would love to make sure that I learn as much as I can before I go out to release my fist arrow towards them. I would also love to get to know the community of hunters around me. That is one aspect of hunting that I miss now that my family is lacking hunters. Hello. I’m new to the Wurtsboro area, and I’m looking to join a community of hunters who are willing to share their knowledge and passion for hunting in this area. I get that some of us want to keep our hunting knowledge and spots a secret, and I respect that. My interest is to find a community to be a part of. The hunters in my family are few, and my ability to travel to our small family property is hindered by my prenatal and professional responsibility, and distance from our new home. I do see that there is land that is registered to the Westbrookville Rod and Gun Club, but I have been unsuccessful in finding any information on how to contact a member of the club. I have also seen posted signs for a Pine Kill Rod and Gun Club with the same result. I have been hunting during the rifle season for the last 16 years, and i am beginning to practice shooting a bow to hopefully bow hunt for the first time next year. Thank you for getting back to me. I just feel bad. My father in law is the one I usually hunt with on the land that he grew up on. We had access to approximately 300-400 acres that was an estate when I first started hunting with him . The estate has subdivided and we have not been allowed to hunt the parcels that are vacant. It’s hard to watch him every time we decide how we are going to hunt the 30 acres we are now limited to. He actually grew up getting to hunt over 800 acres. I think the other part that hurts him is that the camp camaraderie is not there. Neither of his daughters hunt, and we don’t have the gatherings that we used to. I’m hoping that we are able to build on the memories he has. I love driving, but I don’t think it is the smartest way to hunt our property. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

How much land do you and your partner have? My father in law loves to put drives on, but I convinced him that there’s too little land for us to do it between the two of us and the deer keep passing through points were we are not standing. I love drives in that I get to see more of the woods, crazy things can happen when deer do move (I had several pass almost run me over once), and you stay warmer. I do miss the old days too when more family was involved hunting and making drives. We had access to many acres of land and all different terrain, but those days have passed. Would you drive a 42 acre property surrounded by woods with two people or still hunt it? I try to sit and still hunt it but others want to put drives on. My thought is that putting the drive puts too much pressure on the deer. We are also limited to entrance points due to the influx of houses on surrounding lots. Your thoughts. Yes it is. Even if you are not in the woods because you are home with a 2 yr old, a 4 year old, and you don’t bow hunt yet. My two year old actually spotted three does coming into our backyard.
