  1. I'm far from an expert but I think you could catch them pretty well on a fly rod but it would probably not me a finesse approach. I know people do pretty well with hair jigs. I imagine a fly tied like a hair jig would work well. I think they are mostly dead drifted near the bottom like a nymph and then a slow crawl back in. It would probably take some weight (messing with your casting) but I would imagine it would work well if you could get a bucktail or maribou fly down near the bottom. I like to fly fish too but haven't done it in a few years. I only target trout with the flies though. I have fished in the Delaware up to Milford PA and several places down through the water gap. I have never caught anything except shad and smallmouth in there. Some nice smallies though.
  2. I have noticed that it usually takes a few days for the coyotes to find the gut piles after I field dress a deer. I know little about actually hunting coyotes though. I did shoot one a couple years ago while deer hunting. That sounds like an entertaining hunt. Good luck.
  3. You may have gotten a bargain or you don’t get cold as easily as me. Just my KUIU rain set (Yukon if I recall) cost me over $700. It’s great rain gear though. I am saving now for the Superdown Pro coat and pants. The stuff adds up. I am okay with expensive gear as long as the quality justifies it. Most of us spend a lot of money on guns that we don’t really need. I look at it like an alternative to another rifle.
  4. Pretty good in the winter time, at least for eastern PA. You guys probably have a lot more options than we have. Western PA has good walleye fishing but where I am, we are limited to the Delaware River, the Susquehanna and a few stocked lakes. I do better in the Susquehanna than any other places here. Some guys do well in the Delaware but I haven’t been able to figure it out yet. Yes, I use stick baits at times. I have had my best catches on jigs. I’m far from an expert though. Here’s one from the Susquehanna
  5. Hi Vinny: I am a pretty serious backcountry hunter. I am in Pennsylvania, though, so I might not be available enough to be the guy you are looking for. By way of bio, I'm 45 and in decent shape. (I'm about 210 right now so probably not as bad as my screen name but just started a diet and fitness program to get down to my summer weight of 190ish. I'm pointing this out because I don't want my screen name to give you the impression that I can't handle the woods). Our family has a cabin in PA where I do most of my hunting. I also take at least 1 (usually 2) trips out of state each fall to hunt. I have a cabin in Vermont where I hunt most years (low deer numbers kind of like the ADKs). I also hunt in the Adirondacks most years. Sometimes I am limited in time due to work but and have to choose NY or VT for that fall. My experience in the ADKs is in the Eastern part. I have spend a good amount of time hunting the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness. I have hunted from a base camp but also done a couple years bivy hunting. When I bivy hunt, I carry a backpack with all of my food and gear and sleep where I finish the days hunt so that I wake up right where I want to be. It's a fun experience but I have not killed a deer in the ADKs, although I blew a chance at a nice buck a couple years ago when I wasn't ready to shoot and it walked up 30 feet behind me and busted me. Anyway, I have a 4x4 truck. I also have a canvas tent with a wood stove. I have pretty good woods skills - fire building, camping, navigation, breaking down game, etc. I also have a GPS for navigation if needed. I don't like too fancy of a camp with organized meals though. I hate doing dishes and would rather eat dehydrated food or from a can rather than spend hunting time doing chores. Style wise, I mostly still hunt. I like to track if I am lucky enough to have snow though. If you think I might be a good fit, let me know. Unfortunately, I would probably be limited to about a week of hunting time each year. Here are a couple pics of me different set ups. Mobile or base camp. I enjoy both.
  6. Thanks for all of the great info everyone. I really appreciate it. This weekend is the end of archery down here so I will be in the woods (probably not seeing anything). After that, I am going to start planning in earnest. I have a 9 year old son that likes to fish but I think I need a recon trip before I bring him, especially in the cold. Most likely, I sucker a buddy into going with me. I have a lot of gear, including 9' and 8' steelhead rods (Cabela's rods so nothing near as good as a $650 rod). I uses them for bank fishing for walleye in the Susquehanna River so they should do the job. I have a net but it's handle is probably only 5 or 6'. I'll either but a longer net or duct tape a pole to it. Thanks again.
  7. I have never tried crow hunting but should probably give it a try. I have shot a few pigeons over dove decoys. I have never managed to find any pigeon decoys.
  8. I am all the way in the southeastern corner of the PA. Erie is about 6.5 hours from me. The Salmon River and the Oswego river are about 2 hours closer. I would stay in a hotel. Thanks
  9. I agree with this if you are walking out to sit in a stand. I know a guy that hunts in a heated box blind that wears KUIU. It is pointless for sedentary hunting. If you are covering miles a day on multi-day bivy hunts in varying weather, it is great stuff.
  10. I have a lot of gear from Sitka, KUIU and First Lite. I had never heard of ASIO before this thread though. I like the brands that I mentioned and wear them a lot. I think their usefulness depends on your area and hunting style. For stand hunting, this stuff is probably unnecessary. With a couple exceptions, most of this gear is aimed at western hunters or people that hunt on the move (spot and stalk, mountain hunting, bivy hunts). KUIU in particular is not a good system for stand hunting in my opinion but it is my favorite for bivy hunts. When I stand hunt, I am still usually partial to my old Cabela's MT050.
  11. Yeah, I was just going to say that. I found a recently shed antler down here in Pennsylvania on Saturday. It seemed a bit early but it was freshly shed and was not broken off. I have a trail cam set up and I have been getting buck pictures where they are coming in to feed in a clover field but all pictures have been in the night time. We have late archery still open for a few more days and I have not been able to see a deer in daylight hours, not even a doe.
  12. Hi Guys: I am new here. I live in Pennsylvania but I also unsuccessfully hunt in the Adirondacks. I am starting to look for some winter activities now that hunting is almost done. I have been thinking about driving up to the Salmon River to try steelhead fishing. Based on some of the reading that I have been doing, I came across the Oswego River as an option. It looks like it might handle the fishing pressure better and also gives me a chance at walleye. I have a few questions. Can you successfully catch steelhead from shore? What bait or lure works? Are they safe to eat or catch and release only? Thanks
