  1. Thanks for all the information. Crows will be added to my list of sought after game.
  2. I'm considering doing some Crow hunting. I'm looking to get some input on reasons why they are sought after. The area I will be hunting in 4h don't seem to have an over abundance of them so before I take any. I would like to learn a little about their effects on other wildlife especially small game such as grouse, etc.
  3. Personally, with opening day being on Saturday now. I would only hunt sterling Tuesday-thursday for the first week and a half. It's just not worth it. I like to get in deep as well. As far as parking permits. No such thing that I ever heard of. State/local law dictates where you could park along Oc turnpike.
  4. The permit cost $5. Permits have to be in by the end of September to gun hunt opening day. Several areas have antler restrictions in place. I believe all deer harvested have to be checked by the park staff. They provide a decent map that clearly shows what area is what. Some areas dint allow hunting at all and sine are bow only. They also have pick up points through out the interior portions which was designed to get the “road" hunters in deeper. They have seasonal parking spots. Which for the most part are for big game hunting. As far as Bears go. Not sure of the numbers but I'm sure there all over.
  5. You may wish to check out Rensselaerville State Forest or Patridge Run State Forest. Part of the Patridge Run is managed by the Ruffed Grouse Society. Patridge run is in Albany County but a stones throw from Schoharie. I've hunted Rensselaerville before. Grouse are there but you really got walk alot. I've hunted along CCC road coming off of Cheese Hill. Relatively flat area. Snowmobile and truck trails through out. Some private property in the area but fairly well marked.
  6. Shouldn't take that long to change a simple modification to an existing law.
  7. Just wondering if you can waterfowl hunt the Vlaie pond in Schoharie County? The WMA allows hunting in the management area but I'm not sure about waterfowl. Was considering going this year to try it out and if I went it would be there.
  8. I checked the Environmental Conservation Law. Didn't see anything about it. Definately would call to find out.
  9. Hopefully, going up to the camp this weekend to check things out. Going to try and hit some ponds/marshes up in 4H Frogs. Looking at some waterways off of Cheese Hill and Gulf Rd Ext. If time permits maybe I can hit Patridge Run.
  10. Alot smaller than the one tearing up the coolers and mini refrigerators at my campground in Shandaken this past weekend. Sad.
  11. Was checking out the DEC interactive map. From what I can see it appears there are three boat launches for Vlai pond. I know of the Main one with the Kiosk. It looks like there is one off of Gates Hill Rd and one after the Main one. If so are they good enough taking into condsideration weed growth. Don't want to dust the boat off if I can't launch it. I'll take my frogging gear instead and poke around the shore line.
  12. Going to be in T/ Shandaken area this weekend looking for accessible lakes, ponds, and marshes (public of course) for good frog territory. Ideas welcome.
  13. Ended up at ontereo lake with my crawdad boat. What a let down. U need at least two people to haul your boat to the launch. Kind of surprised the launch was boxed out with boulders. There's enough room to allow vehicles to back up closer to make it easier.
  14. Start remembering what excuses I used last year and the year before that so I don't burn them out when my wife starts nagging me about doing the basement over, putting the new roof on, re-designing the kitchen, adding a second story. Which always seems to posted on the honey do list around mid october.
  15. I'm familiar with the roads in that area. I'll be able to find the pizza place
  16. Well my fly fishing gear is not reachable by friday. So I'm thinking the Esopus but I'm not sure of any where to legally park. Not seeing any other areas. Maybe Onteora Lake off of Rt. 28. Just don't feel like standing in marsh lands.
  17. Have a couple of hours to kill on friday. Would like to fish freshwater in the City of Kingston area, not sure on any public access spots. I'll be traveling up from New Paltz so any other area in between would be good to. I'll be fishing from shore.
  18. Recheck the dec site. Trapping courses are listed after the hunter Ed and bow hunting classes.
  19. Nice trappers forum made up of mostly residents of New York and others who trap. http://nytrappers.proboards.com/index.cgi A trappers convention being held at the end of Aug. http://www.nystrappers.org/conventions/nysta/index.html
  20. Finally, had a chance to try frog hunting or should I say frog fishing. Wasn't planning on it but after fishing for four hours with nothing to show for it. I decided to walk the shore line a bit to see if I coud find any. Got five out of the water, three made it to the bag, two got away. Ending up throwing them all back. I would have kept the smaller ones if I was able to hold on to the bigger ones. Funny, I remember the advice of using something red as mentioned above. Didn't have anything red with me. I found a piece of red plastic candy wrapper in the weeds. Worked like a charm. Just shows the benefit of this forum.
  21. Refreshing to see the name Inlet. Been going there for a couple years in February to Ice Fish. Deer are always crossing the ice, Rubs on the islands. Such a nice place.
  22. What's a recommended App to use on my iphone to utilize this forum. I got prompted to install Tapatalk. I never paid for an app yet and don't want to start. (Unless it's highly recommended). Anything else out there?
