  1. MIght six....I don't know anyone you could hire... but feel to email me any questions you might have... Apples for deer you should plant disease resistant trees here are some disease resitant varities Akane Alkmene ANTONOVKA KAMENICHKA Chehalis Crimson Gold Crimson Topaz Dayton Enterprise Florina Querina Freedom Galarina Goldrush Hardy Cumberland Initial Liberty Lib Del Murray Novaeasygro Novaspy Ny 75414-1 Priam Prima Pristine Redfree Richelieu Scarlett O'Hara Sir prize Williams' Pride Wolf River For rootstock you want to make sure NOT to get a dwarfing rootstock.. I like b118 first and foremost ... it is a rootstock that is about 95% size of a full size tree, and bears fruit earlier than other full type stock. M111 is great too, just longer to bear apples, emla 7 is great early bearing and tops off around 20 feet high. Order early... some nurseries sell out very quickly.. guys planting for 2013 have already purchased their trees, but there are nurseries with trees available just have to search a bit. Buy in quanity.. you will save. Go in with an order with Buddies. The next time I make a big order... I will consider offering some trees to guys who are interested... You must cage your trees... Training and pruining are the hardest and most time consuming but it pays off. Spraying... get disease resistant trees and if they are for deer... you might be able to get away without spraying.... some apple pics from today.. enterprise and a honey crisp A little rain and the fruit is growing very quickly!

  3. I have not tried them but they are in the "Bargain Bin" on Cabelas..... I almost tried them but dedided to plant full brassicas
  4. BrumJohn the one with the dozer??? I had the logger clear cut a section I taped off, told him to take what he wanted, any hardwood he skidded to my firewood landing, the rest the dozer pushed... it took probably about 5 hours for the half acre... I had the dozer guy push the debri on the down wind side... the only can enter the plot from the West basically... an excavator could have dug the stumps out and saved a little soil..... but it was cheap for the dozer as he was here excavating my pole barn site that I put up in 2011. I figure a weekend with a high end stump grinder rental I should have it pretty clear next spring...
  5. Nope Family and a full time career! I bet you know what my primary hobby is though!
  6. Here is what my corn plot looked before I turned the dirt in 2008/09 I have done a large scale scrag timber cut on this side of the property... I have another 37 acres lined up with a logger.... that has helped a ton... and made some cash for me... though not alot. But selling aspen and scrag maple is better than doing just plain tsi and leaving in the woods. all those tops makes great cover and provided alot of browse
  7. Thanks Guys! I had 3 days after bloom in the 20's but my elevation goes from 1800 ft to 1200 feet and then drops quickly off my boundry line... I feel the thermals caused by this makes the colder air drop into the valleys and makes my farm have a little frost protection. Orchards along lake Ontario were hit hard by the frost this year.
  8. Here is a plot in the middle of my woods on the W side of my property about 1/2 acre I cleared it in 2011 and planted oats that year... no draw really except at initial green up. This spring I spread a ton of lime hit it with 0-20-20 heavy and planted clover chicory.... despite the drought it looks great deer use it daily. in 2011 early green up 2011 Spring 2012 working the soil I still have to grind the stumps out next spring to make easier to do plot maintenance.. I should get 5 years out of this clover... I will do a soil sample this fall, apply 150 pound of 0-20-20 and parhaps more lime depending on the soil test Here is the plot in clover chicory from about a week or 2 ago a close up of the nice lush growth
  9. Here is a close up of my orchard These trees were planted in 2009 and 2010 all have apples, and I should be able to take the fence down in 2 maybe 3 years. I have alot of apple experience.... I highly recommend them for folks wanting to improve their property. It is alot to learn and they are high maintenance but well worth it. This is a liberty apple... these trees are loaded.. I hand thinned them this early summer but will still have about a bushel for us to enjoyl. Here is a liberty apple tree it is in its fourth year meaning I planted it in 2009.
  10. I thought I would share some of plot and orchard work with you guys. The corn is just under 4 acres... I have an acre of clover planted along the west edge, the south end near the orchard and planted a 40 yd by 25 yd strip in front of a stand in the corn... The Noth end of the corn The southern end and orchard enclosure.. 21 apple trees on b118 and emla 7 roots stalks. A picture looking from the N to the south the strip of clover in front of a stand This clover was planted this spring.... the drought has not done it any favors and I have some grasses growing but I sprayed them today. The corn was planted by broadcasting it... I have planted corn with this method 3 times now.. last year I did soybeans to give the soil a break. I prefer this method for corn when it comes to plots
  11. Looking good Split. I seeded my Brassicas about 10 to 14 days. ago... got a little germination and I hope the 1.5 inches of rain Friday and Sat allows the other seed to germinate.
  12. I like Scott releases as well!
  13. Everything is moving along nicely. The National QDMA office sent an email blast out to members in the area. If anyone is interested in printing and posting flyers send me an email and I will email the flyer document. Also anyone who would like to be the Sectretary send me an email or give me a call. Thanks, Mike [email protected] 585-813-2021
  14. Can't tell what the grass is.... phade is right with the ferns = low ph. You could nuke it with gly, get the tatch off and try some clover. Any seed that is top sowed can be done like this... it just needs soil contact. Brassicas.. same thing. But the lack of light I would try clover.. Genric gly is cheap... ladino clover is around $5 pound.. buy it at a seed and feed store.. cheaper than buck on the bag varities.
  15. You will be more successful if you set your plots and stand locations with entry and exit in mind. ... as well as dominate winds... but most importantly try setting up your stands between your plots and bedding areas and not on the plots. Good Luck
  16. I stopped by Gander the other day... the archery range is upstairs and will be OK for our first meeting but not ideal.. We will try to pick another spot for meetings after the 8/20 meeting that is centrally located (southern Monroe Northern Livingston) that is better suited for meetings..... if anyone knows of a spot that would allow us to hold meetings and if free please send me a PM. I am thinking of maybe a firehall or something. We will be holding a 50/50 raffle on 8/20 so we will have funds to start the bank account. We will discuss the idea of having a gun raffle at the 8/20 meeting to help generate operating cost associated with the Banquet. The drawing could be around Christmas or at the Banquet (likely late Spring). Thanks, Mike
  17. WOW what a thread.... I admit I did not read all 95 pages LOL A couple things came to mind while reading the first 20 pages.. First, once a spike always a spike has been scientificaly DISproven! You can not control genetics in a free ranging herd, scientificaly proven Genetics make alot of the deer, but so does the soil. Better more fertile ground produce bigger racks, scientificaly proven... take a look at B & C enteries for our state and the nation and compare them to soil fertility maps. What a deer has available to eat has a huge impact... more fertile ground has plants that have absorbed better rates of minerals and proteins... that then is available for the deer. AR are not perfect, harvesting by age is best, but difficult for the Mass General Hunting public. Learning to age on the hoof is not easy, but can be done. I don't know if I like mandatory AR, I feel hunters should make the decision, but I would hope we would all strive for 2.5 yr old or older, except for the kids or someones first buck. Personally I would not want to shoot a 1.5 year old, and on my farm after 5 years of QDM I can honestly say my hunting is better, and I have better age class distrubution than before... based on hunter observation data and trail cam data. Doe havrest... if the buck to doe ratio is in balance you Should see more rut activity. The simple message of shoot more does is misleading. It is not a one prescription rule for all properties, we need to base it one the currect data for that area... some places in NY are overrun, others scarce... we need to base our harvest decisions on the carrying capacity and herd ratio. I would guess 80% of NY Hunters are not into all this stuff as I and alot of you are.. they just want to go out one or 2 weekends a year with the family and harvest a deer.
  18. This is very sad news. I am worried about our gun rights. These events made me renew my past due membership to the NRA today..... the anti's are going to run with this tragedy! Help protect your rights!

  20. I will Phade... On a side note I know alot of guys have varying opinions on some issues... for me QDMA is more about being a steward for the land, an advocate for the whitetail, protecting our hunting rights and learning to become a "manager" instead of just a 'consumer" when it comes to our hunting. Our branch is going to fun, active, and a place to gather and share ideas.
  21. Four Season... there is a lot of confusion over this topic. Here is the word on the topic from Lindsay Thomas "To address the concerns raised here about auction hunts and QDMA’s position on deer breeding: Earlier this year, QDMA came out in opposition to the expansion of commercial breeding of whitetails into several new states, and the weakening of regulation of this industry in several other states. The issue was not “high fences.” The issue was breeding of captive whitetails for profit. QDMA does not oppose all “high fences.” Here is a quote from our official position statement on captive deer breeding legislation in 2012: “QDMA supports the legal, ethical pursuit and taking of wild deer living in adequate native/naturalized habitat in a manner that does not give the hunter an unfair advantage and provides the hunted animals with a reasonable opportunity to escape the hunter. QDMA is not opposing high-fence operations that meet the above conditions.” You can read this entire statement at: http://www.qdma.com/news/faq-qdmas-s...-deer-breeding Out of nearly 30 hunts on our auction slate for the upcoming National Convention, two of them involve high-fenced properties. One is a whitetail hunt on a 4,600-acre property in Texas. The other is a wild hog and exotic animal hunt on a Florida property with fenced and unfenced portions, where the fenced portion exceeds 2,000 acres. Neither of these properties involve captive-bred whitetails, and hunting activities on these properties go well beyond the standards described in the position statement above. As always, if you have questions or concerns about QDMA policy or positions and would like to discuss them with a staff member, we encourage you to contact us toll free at 800-209-3337 or by e-mailing our staff. An e-mail directory is available here: http://www.qdma.com/corporate/staff __________________ Lindsay Thomas Jr. Editor, Quality Whitetails QDMA Director of Communications "
  22. Culvercreek... I agree with you and apologize for the time. It was just a meet and greet with the guys who have been emailing back and forth about trying to start a branch. We have literally been talking about this for 2 years and it was time to make a jump. The only time we could make work for us to introduce ourselves to one another was at 4:30. I assure you all other meetings will be well after work. We have commitments from people to take on the Charter President, VP, and Treasure. We need someone to become the Secretary, and need a lot of committee members. I hope you can make Monday 8/20/12 7 PM. Thanks, Mike
  23. Update: We had 4 guys show up and had great discussions. The first official Meeting Will be Monday August 20, 2012 At 7 PM at the Henrietta Gander Mountain. As soon as the National QDMA releases the charter to us I will post Officer names and contacts and the official Branch Name. Thanks, Mike Please if you have an interest in being involved at any level please reach out to. [email protected]
