I got mine the same day, neck was all swollen up big, but none of my deer stank and I've only caught a whiff in the woods twice. I like to think of myself as a real tarsal detector! Like I said I'm up pretty far north for SZ.
-
None of my four deer harvested had any stains on their tarsals, not even my buck that came right in on my scent wicks last week. I have also not seen any rut activity in 7j or 7f...charley Alzheimer is calling for late rut and in my observations he is on. Have heard about a lot more chasin on the southern tier and in PA.

Agree 100%...Plenty of big mature whitetails in NY, most of them just spend most of their time in the dark avoiding hunters. I also agree that a good broad comparative set of systems helps fine tune what works and what doesn't...I do hope someday to be able to relocate based solely on Whitetail Opportunity...just gotta get my wife on board for the move from boring NY to exciting Kansas or Iowa...lol.
-
My posted signs also have my number...I wish everyone did this.

Agreed perfect practice makes perfect and agree with only one arrow after the bow is group tuned.
-
Well none seen but I can't complain...2 deer/yr quota from this stand is met again.
-
One way or another learn from it and move on...you should have respect and reverence for the animal, but some of these guys act like whitetails are endangered when its really the other way around in most of the state. Only you know if you did your best, who cares what any of us cyber jerks say.

Nice work, sweet grinder. Ground my last 2 deer this weekend...I use my kitchenaid grinder with partially frozen trim. Got 16 pounds lean grd off the buck and 11 pounds of the big doe after a whole roast butcher process. Earlier in the season I got 9 pounds off my second deer and only ground enough for a small batch of country sausage off the first button. Made more sausage Friday and some meat sticks yesterday, topped it off with a fireplace grilled bottom round from the button last night...good eats! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Well lots of squirrels, chipmunks and woodpeckers, no deer yet...only have 1 hour left to sit before this weeks round of daddy daycare begins.

Hewitt state forest off of cold brook rd or 41...seen some of the biggest bucks of my life on the ridge facing cold brook....and it's bordered on all sides with corn and has healthy stands of pines and oak dominated hardwood. The glut of hunters usually only last the first weekend and thanksgiving, then it usually slows back down, especially when you know of public land that doesn't appear on the dec map. That said I got my lease in 7f so I wouldn't have to deal with the orange army at all...not worth my safety.

Perfect approach up the 200 yd uphill creek...quiet climb 15 ft up the tree for my last archery hunt at my lucky public stand...come on baldy

Just stepped out to get in the truck and head to the stand...what a beautiful morning and starry sky.

Like a lot of folks said its all mental, personally I try not to think too much, thats why I practice so much, it all feels pretty much like instinct, and when anchored properly with a 3 axis sight it is hard to miss at any range. I used to say lots of stuff to myself, now my inner-voice only says a few import things: When I see deer movement I freeze, get my release on my loop, and immediately my inner voice says "wait." As they approach my lanes and when the deer(s) give me a chance to draw it says "now." When the deer is in my lane the inner voice tells me orientation of the shot and laterally where to aim, "Broad - Behind Heart," "Slightly Away- A little Back." I only have one fixed pin set to 25, so the last thing my inner voice is either saying is "Aim low" if its inside 20; "Right on" for 21-29; "Shoulder-blade High" 30-35...I do micro adjustments again without really thinking about it because I have practiced every distance at every angle literally hundreds of times each. You said it yourself, when you aim at a can you hit it, when you just shoot towards a football you miss...pick a small spot then release. Once I've got elevation placement held still I release without thinking about it, my mind does not say "NOW!" As for follow-through again I attribute muscle memory from tons of practice. So I am not screaming "NOW' at myself and I am not screaming "STAY ON TARGET" at myself when I shoot, I think those two things are the worst for TP. Finally, this is mental, so don't obsess over it, hunt and have fun...You are gonna score on the next one.

At the end of the day most of us have lost deer in archery, even in gun. This is why I say shoot does early and often if you have the tags, good start to finish live practice for when a stud like this arrives. An ethical hunter asks himself "Do I feel like I did my best considering the circumstances to recover the deer?" If no, then learn and do better next time, if yes then learn from it and move on. States like NC are managing a severely overpopulated heard. Jersey is similar but with bigger deer...lots of residential monsters. Doe/day fits their management goals...Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That's the one they should definitely change...just not fair to a working Joe. I've harvested 3 deer in NY on Sundays in the past 6 years, 2 this year, 5 years ago it was my only deer of the season.

Here is the report: Meat Manager 2013 Archery Report 1. Preseason Practice to the point of needing strings changed on a 3 month old bow in July...followed by good Preseason Scouting. 2. Early Hunting in NJ (Sept 15-19) helped me knock the rust off early. 3. Having Multiple Places to Hunt 4. Ranging landmarks at each stand so that I was confident of all possible shot distances. 5. Hunting as many 3-5 hour AM or PM sessions as my wife/20-month old son would allow. 6. Shooting a button and 2 big mature does in the first 3 weeks had me automatic for the nice thick 8 pt. last Sunday...I always get my license and tags as soon as they are available. 7. Switching to Rage 2 Blades 8. 6 years of extremely dedicated archery experience...the first 3 years I hunted nearly everyday in my home WMU 7J...thus my HNY handle used to be 7J Everyday, but now I hunt in several places and probably about every 3 days on average...thus the new handle Meat Manager. -
Alright, I feel the edge of this cold front comin...temps are gonna hover here than plummet at sundown. Looking forward to tomorrow AM Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

3d target + a rangefinder + a 3 axis bow sight + thousands of varying shots all off season to the point of wearing out the strings. Also shoot does early and often if you have tags, nothing beats live practice for when the big boy gets there. Finally set up in a tree where it is unlikely they will pass under your stand.
